or THE SCPSEMX

Chivalrous.

During the war a federal surgeon from Cincinnati died in Tennesse and was buried in a private cemetery. The Memphis Post relates that a few days ago (on the "anniversary for decorating the graves of those who lell in the holy cause of Southern independence") a lady well known, moving in good society, fine looking and dignified, approached the owner of the lot and asked "what person's grave was in the lot? '-Oh!" answered Mr. W., the owner, "it's some Yankee officer my wife took pity on.' Mrs. P. replied: "I know Mrs. W.is a better Ohristain than I but I've no use for so much charity. No Yankee soldier should pollute my •oil. I'd dig up hi? bones with my own hinds first and the flashing eye and glowing cheek evinced her earnestness of feeling.

Freedom of the Press South. The freedom of the press on Southern unreconstructed steamboats is illustrated by one or two little statements which we And in the Cincinnati Chronicle.

A certain Louisville and New Orleans captain happened, by some mistake, last Monday, to buy or come in possession of two copies of the Memphis Bulletin.— When his attention was directed to the fact, he indignantly threw the papers overboard, remarking, emphatically, that no mongrf! sheet would bo furnished assengers by his boat. Two days later a newsboy wont aboard a New Orleans boat with somo copies of the same sheet, and was ordered by the captain not to bring ny more Bulletins on the boat. The people along the bonds won't have it when it is thrown off to them. The Beublican newspaper finds the river a hard road to travel.

Mbbery of Democrats.

The Journal thinks "before we settle anything else, it is proper that it should be settled whether what a man earns he is to apply to his own wants, or whether he is to be robbed of it by the government, for the benefit of an aristocrat and favored class."

Why our neighbor will so poraistently "pitch into" the great leaders of its party would be difficult to explain. If it means to support PENDLETON, HENDRICKS and

Personal.

If any one had charged WashDurne With lying when he declared he waa "not in favor of negro suffrage any where," the poor fellow would have been denounced as a ''rebel and copperhead."—Journal. "If any one had charged General WASHBUBNE with lying" at the time mentioned, or at any other time, "the poor fellow" making such a charge would not "have been denounced" at all, but would have been soundly and deservedly thrashed for his insolence. A soldier like General W. doesn't repay insult with de nunciation.

what sense is there in virtually

calling them robbers of laboring men and stigmatizing them as aristocrats, and all that sort of thing?

Taxation of Democrats to pay the debt incurred in the suppression of the rebellion which they organized, inaugurated and prosecuted is, of course, "robbery."— This is so plain a proposition that it is not worth arguing. The Democratic intellect is not capable of seoing it in any other light. The party ought, as one man, to follow the example of PENDLETON and resist the payment of taxes by fighting their cases valientiy through the courts, as "Handsome GEOBOE" is doing.

An Expensive Rope.

In 1860, each individual owed two dollars and sixty ccnts of the public debt, in 1868 each owes about $80.—Journal.

We believo there is one case on record of a convicted felon who spent bis last remaining hours on earth in computing the cost of his capture, trial and execution, and was "swung off" in the midst of a long and bitter harrangue against the county officials for thair "outrageous extravagance' in the arrangements for his trial and hanging. This is the only parallel for the line of conduct adopted by the degenerate Democracy of these days. "In 1860 each individual owed two dollars and sixty cents of the public debt,'1 to be sure, and needn't have owed anything for the pablic debt of that time was simply and solely the result of Dem ocratic misrule and plunder under two administrations which have sunk into such utter disgrace that not even a Democratic press dares to name them in terms of respect. But "in 1868 each ow?3 about $80, because we have had the convict to capture, try and execute.

It is not for the felon to complain of the cost of the ropo^ on which he makes his final exit and with' no better grace can the Democratic party howl about the National debt, which is simply the bill run up in subjugating about eight millions of Democrats who were incited to rebellion by promise ot aid from the Democracy of this and other Northern Statee and kept in the field two or three years after every hope was dead except the hope of continually promised aid from their Northern friends.

No doubt the rope in this case was costly, but the great State criminal, the Democratic party, is not the quarter whence complaints should come. The national debt is among the least of the legacies which that convict hat bequeathed to an afflicted country.

growing prosperity of the United

States, since the end of the war, may be seen by the increase in the exportation of wheat to England. In January and February, 1866, we sent to England 259,747 cwl. in the same months of 1867, we sent 409,301 ewt., and in January and February of the present yearfthe wheat received there from this country waB 1,427,646 cwt.

Punished For Seing Detected. The philosophy of the old •weep«masteri who flogged his sooty apprentice, taken in larceny \flagrante deliciu, was, "I no lick you for steal, I lick you for being cotched." This we may suppose was the feeling which governed tbe City Council of Baltimore, upon being called upon to deal with three unfortunate conservative members who were detected in the factcf being bribed. By judicious "covering up their track ,' thes miserables might have been as happy as some of their colleagues secretly as guilty as they, but who, for the sake of appearances, were obliged to vote a punishment. The bribery of public men is an offence not often proved, and yet it is believed to be carried to a great extent in public bodies, So many curious tbing3 in the philosophy legislation are done, so many unaccountable transactions appear in legislative history, so much that is censurable seems tn meet with approbation where it should be least expeo tod that the human mind, UBable to account for theso strange circumstances up on any principle of right, utility or experience, is forced to adopt a most un favorable method of solution. Wo do not know thatjthere is bribery and corruption affecting all sorts of measures in which we have an interest We may suspect as much, but there is usually no proof.

But here, at Baltimore, there was proof. Democratic-Conservative proRebel (Jouncilmen, who, by virtue of the treason of Governor

SWANN

to the prin

ciples which put him in power, were enabled to oust from the government tbe true men who had conducted tbe affairs of that city during the most trying hour of national peril, were ehockccl by the discovery that three members, trusted among the trusted, moat conservative of conservative, were true to the greRt inter ests of "number one,' and had accepted bHbes. It would not have been of importance that they had "accepted" them if there had been manifested the proper care not to allow tbe fact to become pub lie. It was the discovery rather than th bribing, which hurt th= susceptibilities of these Knights of the Golden SWANN, and they were required by a deference to public opinion to assume a virtue, thr.ugh they had it not. The three Conservatives Who had been accused, disgraced and ex pelled deserve the severity of the sentence, but if they should lament the partiality of uneven-handed justice which punishejd them by the votes of mer. equally guilty with themselves, but not detected, ought there to be any surprise at the circum stance?

At Confession

A Chicago paper say3 that city "had narrow escape" from being blown away the other day, because there was evident ly a high wind not far off. It must be de lightful to live in a city which is liable to be whirled out of existence by any thun der gust. And then the Chicago TKmes, in an article elsewhere quoted, exposes the sort of ice which is supplied for the use of the unhappy people of that place calls it "frozen night soil," opines that the horrible difficulty of drainage, which has made that town so unhealthy, has at last been overcome by havjng the inhab' Itants "swallow the sewerage,'' and prom nes that "the only person or thing that will interppse any, objection is cholera Really, when the people of a city are ^jhus compelled to swallow themselves, we do not wonder that they are capable of great many sharp tricka upon strangers

Chicago is becoming pre-eminent in many ways. Pre-eminent already "blue beef," "superior scoundrels," sharp sales, big boasts, hollow credits, and houses that fall down, it now hastihe' di iinction of having invented and success fully applied a new system of drainage What can St. Louis do, in the absence of all these advantages? True, hor peopl With good reason claim that her business, if not as pretentious, is safer and more honest and solid than that of Chicag that her growth is real and enduring, that her buildings are of atone and brick in stead of splinters and shavings. But when shall we compete with our neighbor in tLe marvellous feat of swallowing our own drainage Alas I St. Louis 13 not "wid awake !''—St. Louis Democrat.

I Eden. The Charleston (111.) Plaindealer, pub lished near the residence of John Eden Copperhead candidate for Governor, gives the following biographical sketch of that individual: "In this vicinity, Eden is known as the man who, on the 28th day of March, 1864 the day of the never-to-be-forgotten raid had to leave town afoot and alone, skulk ing through tho woods eight miles Ashmore, and thcnce by rail and across the country, in the night time, to oscapc tbe wrath of the friends of soldier? and our then distressed country. He is known as the man who, in a measure, was responsi ble for that raid, by forming companies and arming men to assist in opposing the draft.

As the man who made speeches all over this part of the State, at every cross roads and every school house, declaring that the war wes a failure, an abolition crusado against the rights of his "Southern brethren," and that the men who engaged in it were "Hessians," "Lincoln hirolings," "nigger thieves," "dogs," etc., as tho man who did all in his power to discourage enlistments, urging the people not to give another man or another dollar for tbe prosecution of the war. As such a man he is well knowa to the people of Coles county, and as such the people of Illinois will know him when his reputation is thoroughly ventilated! Ma}* God save our noble State from ihe disgrace of elevating such a man to the highest office in ber borders.'"

Judge Chase.

We do not suppose there is any cbanco of Mr. Chase's nomination. It will take about one more tremendous defeat to imbue tbe managers of the Democratic party with sense enough to make such a nomination. A good part of them have yet advanced a step since James Buchanan was their oracle, with Cobb, Floyd, and Jake Thompson as his chief counsellors, all insisting that no Stats could be "coerced," but that any State might coerce" the Union so often and eo far as she might see fit. Others have advanced to tbe era of Prank Pierce, Judge Woodward and the two Gov Seymours while it begins to crawl through the hair of a few of the younger brethren that there has been an unpleasantness in the country of late, and considerable upturning, and tbat some things are not just as they used to be. One more good thrashing will mix these notions up so that the party may evince some glimmerings of common sense but it were absurd to imagine that a party whose most popular oracle is Brick Pemeiw is prepared to present or accept Chief-Justice Chase as its candidate for next President—N' Y. GHOSTS of perfumes would be the proper appellation for the evanescent odors of the day. Phalon's new perfume, "FLOR DE

MAYO," differs from these all in three essential points: it is infinitely richer, infinitely pur*r, and infinitely more lasting and refreshing, than any other floral ex tract, American or European. Sold all druggists.

No matter who have failed, read what Dr. Whittier says in his Pamphlet, men tioned in another column. The Doctor advertises in every State, hi3 patients are all over the Union, and success means merit with the American people.

"They mad* her a grave too cold and damp For a soul so honest and true." If they|had been wise, the dire necessity of opening the grave for one so lovely might have been averted. Plantation Bitters, if timely used, are sure to rescue the young and lovely, the middle-aged and ailing, from confirmed sickness.

Almost all diseases have their begiu ning in some slight difficulty of the 9tom acb, which would eventuate in Dyspepsia Headache, Liver Complaint?, NightSweats Consumption, Death. Plantation Bitters will prevent these premonitory cymptoms, and keep the blood pure and the health good.

While they invigorate the system, they enliven the mind.

Those hvvlug friends that may reqnire advice, can supply them with this valuable work by eendlng their addrees, with stamp. Thas you can assist the unfortunate without their knowing their benefactor. Certainly no subject Is of more importance than pnaity of blood and perfect manhood.

It le self-evident that a physician who confineeqlmseir exclusively to the study or a cer tain ciaeeof disease* and treats thousands of casee every year, must acquire greater skill in that specialty than one In general practice.— Many payalclans, recognising this fact, lntrodaoe patienta to the Doctor after reading hie Medical Pamphlet.
