In Brooklyn there are over 15 Congregational churche?, some of them very strong and wealthy. In New York there are only two, and one of them is very feeble. London as well as New York is just now swamped with pestilent publication. In some cases penny biographies of prostitutes are paraded in tho shop windows as courageously as copies of the daily papers.

At a masked ball lately given in Paris by Colonel Norton, the Marquis de la Tour appeared as court lady. To overcome this coldness she gives him a lore potion, which acts in a manner at waieh his nature revotls. He does battle with the images conjured up in his mind, but the war within him is so reat that to end it he commits suicide. The poem, both from its subject and treatment, will be "caviare to the general," though it will find many admirers. It i9 more like work of Robert Browning than Alfred

WATCHES. THE BEST I jTHK CHEAPEST!

The extensive use of theae Watches by Hallway Conductors, Engineers, and Xxpreasmen, the moat exacting class of watch-wearers, has thoroughly demonstrated the strength, steadiness, durability •nd accuracy of the Waltham Watch. Te satisfy that. class in all these respects Is to daeida the question as to the real value of these timekeepers.

More than 300,000 ars speaking for themielTea In tho pockets of the people. Imported Watches are mad* an am expensive syitem, in small numbers, hot by numerous makers, and are placed In the market here by' an Importer who first secures a MONOPOLY

OF SAL*

or SOME otnc MANU-

FACTUBI.

To the Manufacturer's profit mast tie added Oestof Importation. A Custom-house duty of 85 per cent, payable In Gold.

A profit of at least 25 per cent, to the Importer, another profit to the Jobber thus nearly donbling the cost of the Imported watch.

At Waltham, Watches are manufactured on a arge scale, nnder one roof and system of superislon and management, thereby saving many of lheexpenses necessarily incurred in small estabiahments henee their great cheapness.

All respectable dealers now sell Waltham Watches and competition, as all the world knows, is favorable to small profit*. The trade is satisfied, because, though the profit on each watch is •mall, the demand is large and all are saleable, ynsernpnlous importers occasionally place a worthless Swiss imitation In the market. To avoid Imposition, the purchaser should invariably demand a certificate of genuineness, signed by the treasurer of the American Watch Company—B. E. BOBBINS.

There are different grades of finish In the difleient varieties of Watches made by the Waltham Company, as ther are different sizes and shapes to suit all tastes and moans but every Watch that bears the genuine trade mark of "WALTHAM" Is guarranteed to be a good one, and nobody need be afraid tobny it. Every "Watch Fully Warranted.

For sale by all first-clas* dealers in the United State and British Provinces. ROBBIKH.A APPLETOK,

flONCRETE PAVEMENT.

I will answer all calls for putting down the Concrete Pavement, made at my residence, corner of 6th and Poplar streets. This Pavement, for walks, is the best known—preferable even to stene, in that it never wears to a dangerons smoothness, and has no joints to become uneven, as in stone, by one flag setting below another.— No excuse now for retaining your old breakneck pavement* when you can get the Concrete laid down in the moot workmanlike manner at a leBS price per square than it has yet been put down for in this city. s«For cellars too, it is nDcqualled, and for walks jsound dwellings, it is preferable to all others, us no vegetable growth can make its way through [a8dtf| T.
