Slightly embarrassed lie replied: "The truth is, sir, I had an addition to my family this morning, and it was not convenient to be here sooner." relates the following: "A dealer belonging to Mostaganem reports another terrible episode. Two women, eaoh having a child, lived with a tribe near Tiaret. These unfortunates did all they coul for a long time to stave off the horrors of £a« mine but at length, all their resources being exhausted and public charity ho longer to be relied on, they agreed to eat the children. A bargain was agreed to and lots weredrawned as to which should be flrst killed. The mother who lost gave up her infant, which was killed and eaten. This served for a few days but at last the hideous supply came an end, and the woman who had sacrificed h«r .offspring claimed that the other should submit to the same loss. The latter refused, being unable to bring her mind to that ex treene measure. After long altercations, both mothers at length agreed to submit theirdifference to the dksision of the Arab bureau, and in this way the horrible facte came to light. The women were of course at once taken into custody."

Aboat That Klection Io Chicago. An event happened in Chicago last week which is a proper subject for congratulation There was an election of a Recorder, City Clerk and Aldermen, and although it is a Republican city, the Democratic candidate for Recorder was by 910 majority. The reason is, that he was a fitter man for the office than hie Republican compeUtir. We are glad of his success accordingly. If either party wishes to maintain itaelf, let it pat up iu very best men, especially in judicial elections. It is easy for those skilled In the arts of politician* to pack nominating coven lions, and till the ticket of any party with weak or improper name^ bat it is a game that is sore to Icee in the end. The new Reccorder of Chicago (Judge McAllister^ is an intimate friend of Mr. Pendleton, and his election is held op as an evidence that the principle* of

that gentleman have made considerable acquisitions from the Republican* of that city. Wo have ne doubt that there are many Republican* there who have become friendly to Mr Pendleton but it i* •hown otherwise than by the figure* in this election. The Democratic vote east ear* ilen the occasion was not one to bring out the foil strength of other party.—S.

-a'-ietf' •1 .* -•'Jrt.'}'.

The extenslre nee of these Watches by Railway Conductors, Engineers, andIxpreeamaa, the most exacting class of watch-wearers, has thoroughly demonstrate* the strength, iteadineee, dnr»biUty and accuracy of the Waltham Watch. Te satisfy that class in all these respects ia to decide the question as to the real ralue of these timekeepers.

Mote than 300,000 are speaking for themseWe* in the pockets of the people. 'Imported Watches are made an an expensive system, in small numbers, bat by numerous makers, and are placed in the market here by an Importer who first secures a MONOPOLY OF BALK Of aOM OKI MAKD-

To the Manufacturer's profit ssast be added Oestof Importation. A Custom-house duty of 25 par cent, payable la Gold.

A profit of at least *6 per cent, to the Importer another profit to the Jobber thus nearly doubling the cost of the imported watch.

At Waltham. Watches are manufactured on a arte scale, under one roof nod system of superision and management, thereby earing snaky of lhe expenses necessarily incurred in small estab lahments henee their great cheapness.

All respectable dealers now sell Waltham Watches and competition, as all the world knows, is fltTornble to small profits. The trade is satisfied, because, though the profit on each watch Is small, the demand is large and all are saleable

Cnssrapulons Importers occasionally place a worthless Swiss Imitation la the market. To avoid Imposition, the purchaser should invariably demand a certificate ofgsaninsness, signed by the treaenrer of the American Watch Compaay—B

when the battle of New Orleans was fought at which time he did duty under Gen. Jackson. This old man still shows considerable active, both physical and mental takes great interest in the different improvements going on in and about the city, and we are informed by Mr. Mulkey that he averages a trip once a week to the Kansas City Bridge works., which takes him about three-quarters of a day to perform. When about home he occupies most of his time, in the spring and summer, in attending to his garden. At present he has nothing but tobacco plants in cultivation, of which he has growing enough to plant twenty acres. Ternance was corn in Canada, and what is called a Canada Frenchman. He emigrated from that country south when he was about thirty years of age. Since that time he has suffered the perils and trials, and enjoyed the romance of a pioneer life. During the last thirty years he has enjoyed life in a fashion to suit himself, and not the times, and is now quietlv descending the plane of life at the advanced age of nearly six score years.

letter from Tiaret, which says: "Four Arabs were recently arrested whose tent was pitched at about four hundred metres from Galibart. They are charged with having killed four persons in order to eat them. There was found in the place where they lived tho body of a young man, portions of whose flesh were missing, and in an earthen pot, together with pepper and Arab spices, portions of a hu man body. Several exhumations were made, and the corpses so discovered wanted the extremities—a proof that the latter had been eaten. In the tent was found a jacket belonging to the Foreign Legion, and the supposition is that it formed part of the clothing of another victim."
