"ifycur folks would nominate General D:z for President it would give us a devil of scare I" The Democrat to -whom the suggestion was made replied that it would scare the Democrats worse than it would the Republicans so badly that they could never be brought to the polls.

Thoy will not affect

a vote one way or another. This waste of timo and endless stream of "gab" are merely evidence of vanity, and you have no right to thrust yourselves in the way at a time when every hour of delay is an injury to the country

The same paper in another article says vrit'u equal pertinency The Impeachment trial has become an avalanche of gab!— What will become of us -whn it reaches th& Senate, unless some wi»o measures are t?V:im

Useless Talk.

The tide of Ulk in the Court of Im poachmsnt still flow? on. ''Day unto day utteroth speech," ami we wish we could add, "night unto night showeth knowledge." But we seriously doubt if the speakir.fr on cither side will have any influence liit P.nal decision. The ^ques tion nt tsinnot be decided by the speech" i.v.vJc. however oloqnent or forci ble tfcvy n'.x.y hp, for every Senator ha?j or ought lo hive. his own understanding of the Istp". iMi'J the most thorough Unowl fdgi of tho fact ia the esse. Interminable oral harrangiics and weary columns of printed arguments cannot tell Senators anything that, ihey do not know of the acts of Andheiv

Browne,

And when

the verbal torrent shall have exhausted itself, the simple question will remain as boforc tho flood-g^tes of talk were opened

to

Various roasons may be assigned for this. Tho public mind during the last seven eventful years has had a surfeit of excitemcnt. Event" ns important as any in the world's history, and battles as bloody as uny in modern times, have been wi'p.csr.pi! on our continent, and have convulsed it from ocean to ocean. The removal by tt?saF!inati"o of an illustrious President having stirred the heart of the nation with inlensest emotion, it is not strarge that tho removal of a President, not illustrious, by the slow process of impeachment, should fail to arouse any depth of feeling or liveliness of interest.— Prior to tho great events to which we havo referred, the impeachment of a President would have convulsed the con* tinent. Now, it can hardly be called the prevailing t.ojie of conversation.

Hie Abyssinian Conquest. As indicative of what tho English Government intends to do with Abyssinia tke Chicago Journal quotes this remark made by 1)]«baei.i in Parliament on the reception of the r.!w that

and his

Capital had fiilen "Tho conquest of Abysmnia is only equaled by that of Mexico by Cortez/'

Tho intention of ELer Majesty clearly is to take permanent possession of the country on the pretext of indemnification for a war mide nerwsnry by Abyssinian outrage.

That Great Britain had juat causa of war cannot be denied. It is tbe duty of every Government V. protect its citizens or subjects, whether at home abroad. And this case the demand wf»s imperative Teeodohe's course was without excuse, and every othar mean^ having failed, Her Majesty could not choose but declare war. Thus far, therefore, Great Britain has tho sympathy of all civilized nations. It remains to bo seen whether it-will iu its final, settlement of the case retain this mpathy. It is stated upon pmtty good authority that in his suicidal course Thecdorv: was urged on by the intriguing representatives of other nations, resident near his court If this is true, those stupid villains will have the chagrin of seeing an insult turned into a biessing. Ambitious a» Er.^iand is to extend her dominions, it -s absurd to suppose that she will be content to get off the captives, and obtain a reasonable securitv for the future civii treatment of her subjects in Abyssinia-

Statistics of the Liquor Trade. The Cincinnati Times presents statistics which show that the value of the retail liquor .'ales in the United States during the year ending June 30, 1867, was one billion four hundred and ninety-one thousand eight hundred Jtmd sixty-five dollars, ($1,000,4Sr,8£5) —or nearly half as mceh as tb« whole interest-bearing debt lui.Qiiwnik of the country!

Tgjsugpo&e that the people cauupt own and pay a debt twice as great as their li quor bills for a single* year is absurd.— And jet it is believqd that not more-khan two-thirds of the retail sales are reported so that th» amount Would be $1,333,989, 153, a auui sufficient to support 4,446,630 people for one year at $300 each.

It •jacarce'ly seems possible* that so tt uoh is annually expended for strong liquors or that the people can-ipif&M> much from the means necessary to keep them from starvntiofi. The amount os'ur one thirdflf the aggregate earnings of the whole people.

A bo ufr-1 '30"0 OOl oe D8erii sBops are reported, to which one-third may be ad dod for the places where it is sold without license

The amount of retail sales in one year is nearly as large as vaiile of all the rai way property in the United States, which is $1,G54,050,799, against $1,333,989,153 of liquor sales. It is raocc than the un ted product of all mines of precious mei als for twenty-years, which is put by Ross

in an official report, at

$1,165,000,000. It* is nearly ten times as much as the valne of all the Church prop erty of the United States.

A "Democratic" Occupation. The Journal Is engaged in the conge nial and eminently "Democratic" voca tion of decrying our national credit and belittleiag our national resources. It seems to be elevated to oestatic bliss by the thought that' "English capitalists" who "know exactly our national calibre" and "have a clearer conception of the limit our credit, a more perfect comprehension of our property creating pov/er, than we have ourselves," have given us "n degree In the great national mercantile agency books of the European capitalists, Mow that of half a dozen of the old dynastie: which we are pleased to denominate "rot ton." It finds a luscious morsel in reflection that "it is quite likely that we could not borrow a dollar at six per cent, wheri Ajisirift could? obtain It at halite rate

It is very true that the Democratic re bellion and Democratic opposition to re construction have somewhat impaired our credit among "the old dynasties who«e felicity the Journal seem? to,envy so much', b'tft there is no rrian of intellianywhere who dfoubti^our ability to pay all we owe unless the Democracy should succeed in getting'control of th Government—mi etfsnt not likely'to'occur The resources of the country are in calculably greater than those of all European nations combined.

In this connection we will again re. mind our neighbor that since the close of the Democratic rebellion, iin&Pihe grasp of that party on the national throat with murderous intent, was shaken and beaten off by the Republican party, the Republican Congress, by its prudent management, has succeeded in causing that debt to be reduced $238,479,834. This has been accomplished in 'otly about two yeai^ arid a half. Ami during that time the Republican Congress-has alto four times modified the internal taxes, reducing them in the aggregate about ttcv himdrtd milium dollar.? a year.

If the Democracy are so much enamored of "old dynasties, emigration would, perhaps, relieve their woes. Thecountry could spare many of their leadors and be vastly benefitted by such an exodus. .Let them not stand npon the order of their going, but eo at once And if they try the same game ia any other country that they have tried her?, the gallows will get its due

Thadrieas Stevens Argument. The venerable Thaddeus 3tev«ns, in his speech «bvwhei«^manifests that chief talent of a debater, wbieh has made him the leader of the House— the ability to seize'treon "lEe dsformining facts, the pivotal polntt of the question under consideration, and to present- them with a force that is logic Itself, and a simplicity that is above eloquence.

His analysis of the question whether Mr. Stanton was included in the Tenure-of-Office act, presents the point so clear* ly, that W6 smile Involuntarily at the idea that it ahould «v«r have teoaped the notice of any person who read the act, It is briefly as follows The -fir»t clause of the act declares, that.jdl officers whatsoever shall hold their offices until the Senate shall consent to their removal, ex

cept those mentioned in the stcond clause. The second clause provides that mecabsrs of the Cabinet shall hold their offices durBook ing the term of the President by whom they were appointed, and one month thereafter, unless they are sooner removed with thu consent of the Senate. ?«ow, the first and second clause together, include all officers whatsoever: IF Mr. Stanton, as argued by the President counsel, is not included in tha second excepting clause,- bo f/ included in the first or comprehending clause

Getting him out of the second clause in the first is "out of the frying pan into the fire.'' In the.language of Mr. Steven*:

The first section provide that every person holding civil ofiSce, who has been ajH pointed with the advice and consent of the Senate, and every person that hereafter shall be appointed to."any so!h office, shall bo entitled to hold such office until successor&ball have been appointed and duly qualified, except as herein otherwiEb provided. Then comes the proviso which the defender's counsel says does not em brace Mr. Stanton, bpcause Iip was not ppointed by the Pr^.ident -in-whose term he was removed. If ho was not em-: braced in the provisj, then he was nowhere specially provided for, and consequently embraced ia the first clause of th« fir?t sectV?n, which declares that every person holding any civil office not otherwise provided for comes within tjie provisions of this act.

This point'we think is unanswerable, and ends the di».ussion

proposition that the

Tho proposition that the Senators should vote by ballot, and secretly, On the question of the Presidents guilt or innocence could only originate with those who dosiretbat tho President should bo cquired by stealth, and can only be sustained by such a? wish to vote lor bis acquital and dodge or shirk their fair responsibility to their constituents for their votes on this, the most important question upon which they have ever been oalied to vote. The proposition ii an insult not only to the independence, but to the integrity of Senator. It is a universal and just principle, applicable to all persons who vote in a representative capacity, that their vote shall be open, so that their constituents may hold them to their responsibility. Where Legislatures have in exceptional instances adopted the system of voting by ballot, they have, invariably found it the cover for .boundless-corrup tion and fraud. Already rumors are abroad that vast agencies of corruption are being desperately brought to boar by the President's friends, in the vain hope thai some assailable weakness may be found in the integrity of:'tho senate. A vote for Substituting secret ballot for an open vote on the question of conviction would be universally accepted as a^, confession by tho Senate of both corruption ai}4 cowardice, and wouid be more fatal to the Senator casting than un opezi vole for the President's -acquittal.

It is believed throughout the West that the Democracy of Illinois have settled the question of the Democratic ?undidate for tho Presidency.
