Wo have heard it said that one grocery
was more powerful in a political cam paign than a dozen newspapers, but we
do not bolieve a word of it. Ono reason
why the newspapers are not more influential among doubtful voters is, that they
do not take or read them. So rapidly is
education and intelligence progressing in this country that the great majority of vo
ters will soon bo capable of reading for
themselves, and determining their duty in
local, State or National politics. The par
ty that overlooks this important fact, and
makes no provision for those who Would
read, but have not the opportunity, may expect defeat in the end—ignominious
and irreversible.
We say, then, *.o Republicans, dissem inalo truth. Supply every section of the
country with good Republican newspa
pers. Let the people be thoroughly in
formed, both as to the principles and in
tentions of tho party. Lot canvassing committees immediately find out who are
the undocided vctcrs, in every school dis
trict, and let the uieans be furnished to the County Executive Committees that
papers may he mailed to them during the
campaign. By systematic work of this
character tho State may become strongly Republican, whilo the people are at the
same time elevated in morals and intelligence
