THE Journal

states the enterprise of

building a new Catholic Church on the eorner of 5th and Ohio streets, during the present season, has not been definitely settled.

LICENSED

BY THE UNITED STATES.—

We call attention of our readers to the new advertisement of S. C. Thompson & Co., appearing in another column, headed "Licensed by the United States."

BURGLARS ABOUT.—We have positive evidence that one or more burglars are in the city, and it would bo well for our citizeus to be ready at all hours to give them a warm reception in case they make

a call.

DIVORCES—Our court report shows eight unhappy, ill-mated couples, or people who imagine themselves so, were separated yesterday by our convenient di_ vorce law. We learn there are about a dozon similar cases yet on the docket.

AN OFFICER from Brown county arrived here yesterday in search of a thief. Ho found his man, lodged him in jail and then wont on a "big drunk." He will wake np this morning surrounded by the four walls of the city calaboose.

ESTKRDAY was a dreary, drizzly, slommiky kind of a day. but we do not complain for it was just the kind ot a day to make the grass grow. The cows want the grass, and we want the price of butter reduced. There's co-operative conglomeration for you.

A GOOD ONE is told on one of our candidate*. While going the "grand rounds" out in the wood?, he reigned his noble courser in front of an humble dwelling, and calling to a ragged urchin, asked where his father was. "Out in the back yard burying Towser, said the boy.— "Why, -what was the matter with the poor dog? inquired the candidate. "Worn himself out. barking at candidates," came back for an answer, and our friend drove on, leaving the father uninterrupted with hi» humane work.

CUT OK* THE HEELS.—The doctors are down on high heeled shoes. Among other lamentable results, as alleged, is that in women it lessens the size of the calf, and ileftroys the confirmation ©fthe leg generally. This is frightful, indeed. It is to be hoped that the ladies will take warning and cut off their high heels without delay.

withstanding the unsettled condition of the elements, and the several attractions at other points, Miss Logan had a fair Bized audience. What it lacked in numbers was made np in intelligence and in appreciating ability. Her lecture, entitled "Stage Struck," is a concise and interesting portrayal of the difficulties attending any person, either male or female, who may have the misfortune to become "Stage Struck." One of her chief aims seems to drive away from the theatre those who burn to rush from an honest vocation to the vanity and folly of a third-rate strolling player's existence and sho does this with a stinging satire which is none the less effective because it is clad in the garb of rollicking good nature.

Miss Logan possesses a rich fund of mimicry, her enunciation is good, her gesticulation appropriate, and her command of feature almost wonderful. She commenced by relating an account of ber acquaintance with Mr. Alfred -Pennyweight, a candidate for histrionic honors, at Saratoga. This gontloman was one of tbej-'upper crust," equally regardless of the judicious application of his "w's" and of any difficulties which naturally presented themselves to li^a successful appearance in his chosen character of "Macbeth.' She followed him through his many humiliating disappointments, until ho Anally makes his debut in the "bleeding soldier' in the play of "Macbeth,'' and in this small part makes a miserable failure, and is cured of his aspirations for histrionic fame. In bringing the account of Mr. Pennyweight's fortuno to a close, Miss Logan dropped the mimic, which is her forte, and delivered a few sensible remarks on tho young man becoming "StageStruck,'' or, as she said, getting "fever in the head and famine in the pocket.'' Through the flattery of friends, in judging of their performances at school, the vanity was excited and the belief engendered that they were likely to make a figure on the boards—in fact likely te become "Stage Striick." She gavo her recollections of the success of such persons and the recollections were not very -encouraging to aspirants in the "sock and buskin" line. They were more likely to find a place in the .poor house than to become brilliant actfirs. There was no more laborious occupation. She could think of fully a thousand having gone on the stage ift her time, and she could count on her fingers those who continued to follow it up as a profession. Only those who had been on the boards from childhood were likely to succeed. Others generally found themsel ves"poor »ticks"and,in most instances, would make better figures driving a stage than in developing the proud features of the art. Miss Logan spoke of the different pesitions women occupied in respect to the stage. They had generally gome motive other than the "Stage Struck," and she teiieved it was the first proof of nobility in woman to show a desite to take her livelihood into her own hands, to earn her bread, to be proud and independent, to thank no one for the right to live.

The fair lectarew concluded with a re-

cital of the trials of a young lady who went en the stage from necessity, and in this portion of the lecture developed the versatility of her powers in portraying the various emotions, and at (he elate retired amid the hearty plaudits of her much pleased auditors. ,,

We learn Miss Logan has another lecture in preparation, which we hope sha may have occasion to deliver here at some more auspicious season. 4

MEATS AGAIN.—Editors Express:— Permit me, if you will, through the columns of the

EXPRESS,

to further explain

to those who do not fully understand the modus operandi of this new organization, and how they are to be benefited by the subscription of stock. Although the whole matter was pretty well ventilated 04 Saturday night at the Court House, there are many who were not there that do not understand how they are to obtain their reward by coming forward with material aid and to be as brief as possible, will make a simple illustration.

While it is not our purposo to return you your amount subscribed, atany future time, we do propose to keep the capital stock good by selling just high enough to keep it as a working capital, and if to-day beef is selling in tho market at 20c, and that should prove to be 5c above the cost, the Association by its obligations would sell it to you at 15a, and henoe you will readily discover that you have saved 25 per cent, in your purchase, and this purchase of yours is an event that transpires every day. Can y6u reasonably ask any beiter dividend.

It has been asked what ol those who are not subscribers? I answer, sell to those as cheaply as they can buy elsewhere, and perhaps a liitlecheaper, to induce them to patronize the Association, but not give them all the benefits of the stockholder. If. however, at any time it i? found inadvisable to continue this institution, if the capital stock is kept good, it can be returned to those who subscribed it. A CITIZEN.

Our Low Rate puts it in the pbwer of Grpnt Clubs and local comirfittees to supply their townships and neighborhoods with good Republican sentiments, at a trifling expense. .u

Now is the time to'form public sentiment. Good Republican documents should be put in the hands of those undecided as to which party to attach themselves. Few votes are changed by the vast amount of time, money and talent expended just on the eve of election. Republican newspapers should be .sown broadcast. They are better than speeches, printed or oral, com ing every week with sharp, brief/pointed items, they are tho small shot that tell.— It is a steady agenc}' the work goes on continuously, as the seed grows in the ground.
