HUMOROUS.
A Grave Literary Question Settled— The Storm about Who Wrote''Rock Me to Sleep Mother," Ended.
Who is Ball? Who is Akere? Who is Percy? Who is the "eccentric blacksmith of the far South—the bloated capitalist who was "on the third-rate pay list of the "Field and Fireside," and on such terms wrote poetry? Now pray let an end be put to all this storm about who wrote "Rock Me to Sleep, Mother." I had always intended to remain quiet on this subject.
I had hoped that circumstances might so fall out that there should be no necessity for my confessing. But it has happened otherwise. I perceive that it would bo doing a public wrong to remain silent longer. Therefore let the controversy tod.
I wrote "Rock Mo to Sleep, Mother," myself. I did it iu a lucid moment in 1S31—beforo Akers was born before Percy was born before the blacksmith had acquired the charm of electricity bofore Ball's mind became affected it was suggested by a remark 1 once made to my mother, when I was about to retire to rest. At that time I was in the habit of being rocked to sleep every ovening but it has been weary yoars now since 1 received an attention of that kind. They tried to rock mo to sleep onco in the far West, for porpetrating a joke that was uncommonly bad, but I dodged the projectiles.
Now I should novor have said anything if Ball had kept still. As long as the oth-
content, because it was fair to ptrsume that they were persons competent to ere ate such things but when this absurd Ball comes forward and tries to make it appear that at some time or other in the dim past he was rocked to sleep, and that it afiected him to such a degree that he was able to go off and write poetry about it, ho was too much for me. Who the mischief authorized Ball to write poetry? What right has Ball to intrude upon the muses? Who is Ball, that he should indulge in the insolence of writing poetry? Did you ever see his "fugitive and occasional" versos? Why, they are the worst that over saw the light of day in any land. They are slovenly and maudlin, imperfect as to rhyme, and bankrupt as to reason. They never can be accepted as evicence that he wrote Rock me to Sleep mother."
But when wo speak of proofs, let us romember that one cannot write feelingly of that which he has not experienced. Now, I put it to you frankly, as a man and a brother, it you really believe that anybody ever rocked Ball to sleep? Think of that groat, ovorgrown infidel in a cradle, with his heols in the air, taking syrup of squills through an India-rubber pipe, and getting himself rocked to sleep. The very idea of such a thing is an outrage.
I will not put up with this. When I write poetry, I don't want Ball to come prowling around and confiscate it. 1 feel my gorge rising. It is fashionable, and, therefore, nocessary, that when parties come forward to claim the credit of having written "Rock Me to Sleep, Mother," poetic evidence shall be offered in proof of the candidate's ability to compose verses like those in question. I will now furnish my evidence, and at the same time I will destroy this Ball.

A farm'cj called a" witness to prove the bad character of Enoch Jones who had formerly been his near neighbor. "Well" said the counsel "what do you know of Jonos?" ',1 can't say that 1 know much about him." "Does he bear a good charactor?" "Wo didn't like him too well in our neighborhood." "Wo didn't suppose you did, but could you trust nim or believe him under oath?" "Ho might tell the truth if it was to his interest." "Do you think Jones an honest man?'' I never gave him a chance to steal anything from me." "But do you think Jones would steal if he had a chance?" "Well, can't say positivo but I would rather not try him "Perhaps not but am I to understand that you have such a poor opinion of Jones' honesty that you would bo afraid to leave any thing where he crtuld steal it if ho were inclined?" "No:
I shouldn't be afraid—if I watched."
Parson B. was truly a pious man, and, at tho long graces which usually followed the meals, ho and the whole family reverently knolt, except tho parso'sn brother, who being o'er much fat, usually stood with his back toward tho tablo and overlooking the garden. One day,—it was summer time—tho parson was unusally favored not appearing to noticQ the fidgety movements of his brother, Who kept twisting aboqt until, finding no end to tue thanks, he broke in with, "Cut it short, parson, cut it short, the cows are in the gardon playing h—11 with tbe cab bages!' Tha interruption, through irlevreont, was well timed, and the i.ows wore driven out. "Are you not a'laimed at the approach of tbe King of TerrOT8?r said minister to a sick man. "Oh, no, I have been livsix and thirty years with the queen of terrors—tho King can not be miach worse,"
The "woman in black" has come to grief in Erie, Penn., where she is under arrest for forgory. Her name is Mrs. Clara Baker. She is handsome' stylish, and has had a large and brilliant career ae a confidence women. "There are two ways of doing it.," said Pat to himself, as he stood musing and waiting for a job. If I save four thousand 1 must lay up two hundred a year for twenty years, or I can put away twenty a year for two hundred years. Now then •which shall I do?

A Pulpit Scene.
Echoes from the Clubt says: "Clergymen who increase the number of their church services in Lent should be careful as to the parsons whom they invite to officiate for them. On Friday evening last, tho congregation of a quiet country village not far fron Winc&nton, in Somersetshire had assembled in the parish church for divine service, which was to be performed b}- a curato belonging to the neigborhood. This gentleman had been dining with un-Lenten self indulgence, and found his articulation so much impeded thereby tb&t he could get no furthor than 'Dearly beloved brethern.' These three words he repeated three times and then inform ed the astonished rustics that be couldn do anything more for them."
The Man who was hemmed in by crowd has peen troubled with a stitch in his side ever since.
WALTHAM
"WATCHES. THE BEST1 |THE CHEAPEST
The extensive use of these Watches bj Railway Conductors, Engineers, and Expressmen, the most exacting clasj of watch-wearers, has thoroughly demonstrated the strength, steadiness,^durability and accuracy of the Waltham Watch. Te satisfy that class in all these respects is to decide the qaestion as to the real value of these timekeepers,
More than 300,000 are speaking for themselves in the pockets of the people. Imported Watches are made en an expensive system, in small numbers, bat by numerous ma kers, and are placed in the market here by an Importer who first secures a MONOPOLY OF SALB OF SOME ONE MANU
FACTUBE.
To the Manufacturer's profit matt be added Oestof Importation. A Cnstom-honse duty of 2fi per cent, payable in Gold.
A profit of at least 25 per cent, to tbe Importer, another profit to thejobber thus nearly doubling the cost of the imported watch.
At Waltham, Watches are manufactured on a large scale, under one roof and system of superision and management, thereby saving many of vhe expense* necessarily incurred in small establishments hence their great cheapness.
All respectable dealer* now sell Waltham atches and competition, as all the world knows, is favorable to small profit!. The trade is satis fled, because, though the profit on each watch is mall, the demand is large and all are saleable. (Jnssrupulous importers occasionally place a worthless Swiss imitation in the market. To avoid Imposition, the purchaser should Invariably demand a certificate of genuineness, signed by the treasurer of the American Watch Company—B. ~. BOBBINS.
There arc different grades of finish In tho different varieties of Watohes made by the Waltham Company, as thor aro dlfferont sizes and shapes to suit all taste* and moans but every Watch that bears the genuine trade mark of "WALTHAM" is guarranteed to be a good one, and nobody need bo afraid to buy it. Every "Watch Fully Warranted.
