Our people cannot understand why it is that bee^ should bo shipped from Illinois and Indiana to Now York, and there sold in tfie shape of steaks for superior to anything seen in our market, and at prices but little higher than wo are compelled to pay for the tough, leathery, fibrouB and tastef less stuff upon which we break our teeth. That such is the fact, every body admits, but why it should be a fact nobody can tell. We don't know whether it is the fault of the butchers, the drovers, or the farmers, and it don't make any particular difference,

far as resrtlts

to the consumer are concerned. We advise everybody to quit eating beef and take to mutton. It is healthier and better in every way. Let them stick to aheop moat until farmers and drovers learn to fatten their beef for market.

We k&rn from a butcher that much of tho beef we get here is Texas beef—driveti on the hoof all the way from Texas, and then killed before it is fattened, aeclimaUd or reconstructed.

means of grace.

One of the tbeinadle'nt, the loungers and the loafers. are. the jfirst anspected because of the fact that indolence is known to be the great source -etajftflfager of crirife.—

Therefore wJiK ai gualfl against temptation is a means of grace. It helps resistMTEH. it prevso*». ^ap proach of evil and so defends against its allurements.

Work is a means of grace also because it aids in developing that which is good in man. He who labors for a good end, whose heart is so full of a good purpose tbkl'lse is willifcg to work-hard to accomplish It, must fee isade better by fcis* labors. Take even the ordinary purpose of1 of getting^a home and making one's self and family comfortable, respectable and happy. How a motive of this softfearried in the mind day after day and yearjafter year, makes the man better than he otherwise would be. Go on from this to even higher motives, and the higher you go the more surely you will see the good results. Many a man prays to be made better when what he needs, in order to secure an answer to his prayer is to go to work TOT gome' hoble end. Work is means of grace, therefore because it is a defence against the evil and an aid to good, and is hence a duty.

The thought which I present in this letter may seem of little value. But so strongly, has observation convinced me that useful employment is a means of grace, that now never trust a reforma tion unless the man who claims to have reformed goes at. once about gome sort of work. I never iiave known one to stand who ditl not do this. Failure is certain

I have noted the samo thing in regard to personal Christianity. Not only am I thorougly convinced that an Idle person cannot grow in grace, but I very much doubt if Christianity, personal piety can long life with the indolent. The temptations to which idleness exposes one, and the loss of self-respect which it necessarily engenders, these and other evils connected therowith make it well nigh impossible for a person to live a christian life in indolence. Besides, if as I have urged, work is a duty, then idleness is a sin—and so the Bible teaches, and of course personal piety cannot increase with one living in continued and known sin.

Here 1 find the secret of many sad failures. Timfii and again have seen meiS fust upbnjtbe verge of a better life, breaking away from evil habits and associates, but entering upon no active employment. led back again and enslaved, largely through this very failure to go to work. is thd time to form public* sentiment.

Good Republican documents should be ptit in the hapds .pf those undocided aa to which party to attach themselves. Few votes are changed by the vast amount of time, meney and talent expended just on tha eve of election. Republican newspapers should be sown broadcast. Tbey are better than speechas, printed br oral,'corti irg every week witb^Harp, brief} pointed items, they are the small shot that tell.-^ It is a steady agency the work goes on continuously, as ther soed grows in the ground. Democratic speakers and news papers are'stripping for the field. Bad seed will grow if the ground is tfot Occupied by good.
