number of the Indiana School- Journal has this paragraph in reference to the sihool tax law passed by the last Legislature:

It will bo borne in mind that at the last session of the Legislature a law was passed authorizing tho levying of taxes in city, towps, and townships, for purposes of tuition iu the public schools.— Whereas a.decision Adverse to the «ystem had b6en given in the Supremo Court, in-(5' 1867, it was bolievcd the suit would bo brought against tho constitutionality of this act. But greatly to the gratification mod encouragement of the friends of publie schools no suit has as yet been brought. As tha tax paving season for the current year closed on April 30th, and aa Mveral corporations bnve b«en taxed under this act, we are led to the gratifying^ conclusion th»t the law stands approved. In other words, that all are so impressed with tbo necessity of education that they rea'ly accept the law providing for inereasod educational privileges, without questioning its constitutionality. TJhis is truly encouraging, and if this act shall remain operative, it, in conjunction with other provisions now in force, will firniah the means by which the schools throughout the Stato can be brought to ar\ average length of nix monthr, per antium the year IS 70.

We congratulate our Sockville friends upon this evidence of enterprise and progress and hope that tho new Hall will be the means of promoting their social and intellectual welfare. "We copy the following notice from the Republican: .ii-Thi citi.eni of iRockville, generally, attended the dedication of "National Hall," last night. The exercises opened with music by the Rockville Band, when a prayer was offered by JEld. J. O. Reed. Gpu. Steele then introduced Hon. Thos. H.

Nelson who addressed the audience in a speech of over an hoar's duration Whi^h abounded in beautifully rounded sentences and was delivered in that peculiarly attractivo.styfle for which Mr. N. is noted. He alluded to tho advancement made 1^7 our town and county since his first acquaintance with this section or country he remembered we were at times virtually 'from the fest of fliankind for weeks at a time for want of mail facilities in thos® dajts there was not a fridge spanning a stroa'm in our county, but that 4hie class of inconveftiancoajiad long since been obviated bv the erection of gogd and substwitiM tmdgel. i^Bbat he also remembered the consummation of another

county and to the growth it was that of the E. & C. Railroad. This road had furnished us means of transportation for the products of the spil and placed us in direct and daily communication with the world.

And now, said the, speakor, you have peered for £oir «ijoyinei^, edification advancement and ^nproveoaentlhis magnificent Hail—a tuifdicg which would (do honor to any city in the State of Indiana —oomplete.iand perfect in all ^its proportion^ where it wilt bejyour privilege^ to i£$it {jrom tifti^ tp time %nd partid{Mkte'in whatever is calculated to entertain atad ^vance the b«8t interests of' Jthi* people. .After complimenting Gen. Steele, together with the~Directory of the Bank, for the enterprise exhibited in the erection of the

Hall, Mr. N. proceeded to speak at some length of the Republic of Chili, to which country he was the Minister Plenipotentiary under the administration of Mr. Lincoln. His remarks on this subject jiighly entertaining %nd instructive, fthd Wete listened %o with harked attention by all present.

After the conclusion of Mr. Nelson's tiebfresfc the choir, fiang that patriotic and soul-inspiring national ballad, the Star Spangled Banner, which was enthusiastically applauded.

Then followed brief speeches from R4v9. Wm. Y. Allen, J, Bishop, J. Reed, and S. H. McNutt, after which the doxology was sang by choir and audience, when the h«ntdiotion -wat jprcmounced by Rev. S. H. McNutt. Thus ended the ceremonies of the evening, which we teel safe to say- were highly ettif^ing tt all present.

Indianapolis Journal gives the following accoutft of & "ter|i|^ragedy" wfcicb has startled the citizens of Knox county:

On last Sunday evening, lfndx county was the scene of a torrible tragedy, oc4 curring near Wheatland,,and which may result in the death of a very promising young man named William Dunning. For some time ycung Dunning has been paying attention to a daughter of Charles Smith, Esq., who resides some four miles from Wheatland- Of la£e, Miss Jskmth has received several" anonymous communications, evidently penned by ope under the influence of the "green-eyed monSter," warning her nolohger to encourage the suit of young Dunning, and assuring her that in case she married him, he wot)ld bo killed. On last Sunday afternoon, young Dunning accompanied Miss Smith home from church, and remained during the evening. Afcout half past ten o'clock, Dunning stepped to the door to see if thfe rain had ceased, in order to return hom^ as he closed the door he went to a tabljB .near the window tp get a drink of watef, and while in the act of drinking some onb fired at him through the -window, the charge entering his head just above toeright eye. The gun was loaded with shot of various sizes, but principally of buckshot. The young man is still lying inra critical condition, but at present there is •fltill sope little hope^f.h|s. final iBQgyqtf. A ydurig mati named Albert* Byefs'wis yesterday arrested on suspicion of beirfg. guilty of the crime. Circumstantial evS-^ dence will be very much against him. Some one discovered the wadding of the charge fired to be mado of the leaves pf some law book, and upon examination such a book was found at the house Jof Byers, as he was supposed to be the party, who wrote the anonymous letters.
