The Abyssinian War.

"Whatever feelings of indignation may c,tiil linger in tbo American mind at the course pur=uoi.l by England towards our Government during our recent struggle for national existence, it Is impossible for the people of this country not to sympathize with tbe British in the war against the barbarous King ol Abyssinia. The cause of tbo English is one that cannot fail to er:lU tbe sympathies of the Chris tisn and the humanitarian everywhere.— Our people will therefore notice with general regret the accounts of army correspondents writing borne, which prove thtt tbe Abyssinian undertaking is likely to lead to cost that will engender disecntsnt among the people, and to disasters a«cond only to those of the Crimean campaign, th»t will tend to weaken confidence in the military leader and to demoralize the force. The first great failure was mot iu the Bombay Transport Corpn, which is said to have cost as much ab the Fending of a score of battalliona into Theodore.'ft dominions, and which is described aa a monstrous

fiasco

by leading

British journals. Tho accounts nbow th» expedition to be no farther than one-third of the way on thejournoy to Magdala And it has been asked whether it is going there at all, or whether, aftor it has penetrated to within three or four days march ..f that place, tho Emperor will not quietly striketants ar.d movo the prisoners to some more remote point, to reach which will augment the serious difficulties al raady enoount'red.

Thorn is much foroe in this view of the case, for it ceriuinly lies within the powar of this professed descendant of SotO

N to rn vo from point to point with safety to himself, but with rapid de atruciion to hia a sailanta. Nothing could be surer than that the British ranks wou'd be speed.ly decimated by disease ana death if tne expedition ia kept in the oouniry through all seaions and this Theodore hai, the power to do, unless tbe undenakifig is abandoned. The worst that the army could do In retaliation would Le to destroy aa it went along but there it not much to destroy and it would be highly impolitic to work destruction of the very things that might prove importantly ceceseary to the preservation of tbe foroe in a retreat from an enemy's country

Destruction on the retreat itself would bo a different sffair, but where would the retreat commence if the policy were adopted of leailng the foroe from one pluce to another, and conquering it through exbuusution It is plain that there are grave difficulties in tbe way to gucoau, such as cannot easily be overcome. Already tbe expense is very great, largely eiceedlug tbe two millions Bter". ling, to u.eci which British tax-payers b&vu been mbjected to the levy of an ad ditionul pentjyto the long odioue, and unpopular income tax. Yet tho campaign can scarcely be eai.l to have fairly commenced. Tho ndvanco guard is not more tlinn a hundred ®ilos from Annesley Diy Tho army cannot, it is said, got on without nuilpp, yot thosa are dying in hundred?. Delay must bo incurred until others an» fiiit out, which in turn also die midas thesn animals carryall tho army supplies, of course tbo soldiers cannot movo forward without them. The picture presented is a gloomy one for England, and sue realizes it.

Comp'!aint3 aro mot in the columns of tbe general press, and serious charges have b»en male in Parliament against those coocerntd, of bungling, incapacity, and counter purpose', from tbe beginning. In one journal tbe Commis3ary-Genernl of Bombay, is accused of almost destroying tbe usefulness of the transport train, cy his obstructiveness and red tapeism. in another, asvere reflections are made upon Sir beixt .NaPIEB, for not arriving nt Abycci.iis until bo lato ft period as to lessen tbe chances of success materially. The army, which numbers about eighteen thousand (camp follower* included), is '-eating its head off/' and is certainly not in the best spirit and order.

A correspondent writing from the camp, »sys tbnt "*words aro never seen," and that "it is impossible for tbo wildest imagination to realize that we are campaign ,ng in an enemy untry, and again, that it is simply Aidershot. with a littl« aioresun, a little morn dust, a good deal tete discipline, and considerably les* to do.' The same writer also stales thatthe whole beat ar.d burden fall upon the commusary aud land transportation departmenu. This may be more or less exag« gerated, but it certainly contains much sore truth than tbe people, who are supporting me cost, like to hear.

England has tbe uncomfortable prospect before her of a multiplication of the cfl«t of keeping the army in the country

to tens, perhaps hundreds 6f millions, with the chance then that Theodobe will bang the captives, or compel his assailants to ransom thorn lor an immense Eumi with the stipulation that the expedition shall promptiy quit b's domain a result which it might be ^umently more politic for them to accept than to prolong a war which can only end iu untold cost of treasure, of life and military renown.—

Indeed, it is not easy to see how proud Albion can avoid great co»t and mortification in any event, in this unfortunate undertaking.

Democracy Unveiled.

Among the many luxuries which we forego is tho regular perusal of tbe St. I,ouin

Tlmsf,,

tho recognized Democratic

orcjan of Missouri. That odoriferous fhcot seldom finds its .way to our oiiico, bnt we are. happily, not left in ignorance of tho work it is doing, as its neighbor, th

Democrat,

Who is thsro so stupid as not to know that

had the Confederate Government bten est blished, there would have been more libertg in either section,

port him. Tou may act now possibly without war but delay your action thirty days, and the government will bo in the hands of traitors, to be rescued only by force of arms."

These articles are but samples of the .•wrt of teachings which this organ of the Democratic party supplies, day after day( to tho Democratic votr-rs. Nor does tbe

Times

or

feeling oppoied to tbe little

nest of cowardly conspirators who disgrace the name of Democrats even as tbey have already dishonored the name of rebels.

We thank the

Times

for its candor. In

a republican government, where everythingdopends upon the votes of thepeoplo, it is of the last importance that the peoplo shall not be deceived as to tho objects and intentions of the parties who ieek their support. The Democratic party throws off all disguise. It clamors for a now rebellion, and proclaims that its o^ ject is to establish tbe sort of liberty prevalent under the Confederacy. If the people of the United States want something worse than Mexican anarchy, the Demo r-raticparty frankly offers it.

The odd* against survival in tbe first year of life are tremenpous in tbe first month, the mortality is at tbe rate of 571 per thousand. Some notes are given dogcrptive of baby farms. The current market rates for adopting an infant off-hand, no questions to be asked, and no futher trouble to be given, is fifty dollars. In answers to an advertisement offering a child for adoption, 345 replses were received, of every variety of importunity. f»ome letters are in termB of tbe most tender importunity, and breathe piety and affection in every line. One person visited, however, had seven children which werefed on bread panada, with water. These bouses are ueither registered nor visited by any insper-tor, a» common lodging bousfts are 3o great is tbe waste of life among children in London, Manchester and Liverpool, that a famous doctor observes that the children of the idolatrous tribe who passed tbem through the fire to Moloch scarcely incurred more danger than is incurred by the children born in several districts of the large cities. Ignorance, neglect an3 privation are among tbe leading causes they are main evils attendant upon the system of baby«farmi»g, which is not uncomplicated, however, by crime.

Ttie fytem is daily growing in practice hereabouts, and something should be done to check and destroy it befoti it reaches to tbe terrible extent of crime it hat reach•d in the mother country

Is Lying Gentlemanly.

We ask this question alike of the Press and the Public, and submit that it is worth consideration. Why not?

Tho code wuh which we tako issue assume* that it ie very rude and ungentlemanly to call the utterer of flagrant falsehoods a liur.

We insist, on the contrary, that it is the liar who proves himself a gentleman —nut he who exposes tbe fraud and denounces tbe fabricator.

Horotio Seymour, cx-Governor of our State, saw fit, in making a Democratic speech at Bridgeport, on tbo Friday night noxtbetore the lato Connecticut election, to assert that.

Now when the Republican party inaugurated the policy of governing the Suuth by force, it involvod the necessity nf maintaining great armies groat standing armies It involved great national expense. The war ceased nearly four yoars ago and yet

"We think if Johnson is to bo punished at al), it should bo for having declared, as a Senator in 18G1, that if tbe secession party were to succeed it would be the ruin of the country. paper?, oven more widely circulated, and recognized as party organs throughout the West, utter the same infamous teaching 6ven more boldly. What is that teacbiug It is that Democratic masses must '-rise unanimously" to the support of a Jl'resident constitutionally impqpehed, must "throttle in the Capitol" the Senators and Representatives who form the ruling majority of Congress, must "rescue the government," "possibly without war," but it action thould be delayed thirty days, "only by force of arms." This is a new rebellion. It is demacded by tbe organs of a political party, and the advice is given only to the adherents of a political party—tue same party that made war up on the government in 1861 to defeat the constitutional election of a President not chosen by Democratic votes. It is tbe rebellion of a party, for what? To re-estab-lish the Confederate government. ''Who there so stupid &s not to know that had the Confederate government been eetablithed there would have been more liberty in oitber seotion 7" This is the language of a Democratic organ, and it speaks tbe feeliugs of thousands of Democrats. "Let us rebel lest we may be defeated again in a Presidential election. Let us establish tbe Confederategovernment. Under that government only can wo find the sort of liberty that Democrats enjoy!" And what is that form of liberty The cowards of the Kuklux Klan, who resort to assassination of unarmed and holples9 men in order to carry elections they en. joy to the full the glorious liberty for which the Democratic soul so longs and pants.
