Our Weekly Campaign Edition.
Our political friends are requested to notice the announcement, elsewhere in this issue, of the campaign rate adopted for the "Weekly
Express.
We propose to
furnish our weekly paper from this date until the first of December—a period of eight months, at the low rate of one dol* lur The price of subscription is such a3 will placo it within the ability of nearly overy Republican in this, and the surrounding countios, to tako the paper.— Theapproaching Presidential canvass will be an exciting one, and every Republican should keep well posted in political mat* ters. or outlay will be spared to make our campaign puprr equal to any in the State.— The lending speeches of tho campaign will bo published in our columns, and they will at all times contain a summary of tho lute.-t and most reliable political news, full tcli'graphic dispatches, &c. We trust that i.ho Republican friends in tho surrounding country will interest themselves in adding to our increasing weekly circulation and that the various Township Executive Committees will also uid us in tbe matter. There is no better way of circulating sound political matter than through tho medium of local newspapers. More is accomplished in this manner than by any of tho other modes of disseminating political information.' Few persons care to read a speech or argument in pamphlet form and yet there is scarcely a person who is not desirous of perusing a newspaper, wherover it found. We hope that our Republican friends will bo active in raising and forwarding us clubs of new subscribers ipr the Campaign Weekly.
The tlrcat. Reaction.
The Democracy of our State are busily engaged at this tirua in the business of bragging and blustering as to their strength in Indian* and the probabilities of carrying the fall elections, At their State Convontion, ori the 8th of January, the bragging policy waa inaugurated and has since been steadily adhered to. The leaders of the party then gave out that tho "grand reaction'' had commenced in Indiana, and the effect of it was first to be expected in tho April oleotions The choice of

<LETTER FROM THE FAR WEST>. -----
[Extracts from a letter from a citizen of Terre Haute.]
SOUTH PASS CITY, W, T., MARCH 3d, 1868. — —: I must tell you how I came to this new Eldorado of Gold. I procured a pony, saddle and bridle in Virginia City, and thus equipped started, December 28th, 1867, for Salt Lake City, U. T., 450 miles distant, mostly over and thro' the mountains. The 4th, 5th and 6th days out we made but 25 miles on our way—through snow and storm. We arrived in Salt Lake Jan. 19th, 1868, where we remained two weeks, recuperating and preparing for our trip of 260 miles to this place, which we reached in 22 days, without any mishaps. We left our horses and sleds at Green river, and from thence were compelled to use hand-sleds 100 miles, to our camp
Money matters are controlled here by the Eastern markets, yet the country is almost self-sustaining in flour, beef, bacon and produce generally, and being also gold and silver producing, does not suffer thro' the same excitement that your market does. However, men are rich to-day and poor to-morrow.
I hope to find a location for the coming summer, not more than a day's journey from here, on "Cayuse Poney," but intend going home next fall—at least to visit.
In writing as I now do, you must re-
member I am impressed with different ideas and views of the present at least, and having been in the Mountains just long enough to form a favorable opinion of them, I may seem prejudiced, though
I have not forgotten the pleasures and luxuries of the Middle States or comforts of a home, where all desires are attainable. Yet in a few years you will find this in reality the Eldorado of the interior if not of America. The "self risers," of the slope think California the haven of their hopes, and surely there is more in it than the mere assertion. Even Oregon and Washington Territories have advantages over many countries now thickly settled.
But here we are on the eastern slope of the main chain of the Rocky Mountains in close proximity with valleys where snow seldom lays a week, and where stock will keep fat the year round on the native grass. Fruit can be grown as well as in Indiana, and Cereals yield better than in Minnesota, while communication is being shortened with the East and West, and Mineral resources almost unlimited, am I far wrong in supposing that this new Territory, will, at no distant day, contain a population of wealth and affluence.— This District of "Sweet-water" carries the palm for <Quartz> to-day over all others in
NO pains
the Mineral Districts of America, though having just arrived, and the snow being too deep to <prospect>, I have as yet no in-
terest here. The Placer Mines here do not amount to much and may never yield anything worth mentioning. Wood and water are abundant for the present though rain seldom falls; and coal of easy access, and abundant coal oil also can be had for barreling, there being several flowing springs; one situated about thirty miles from here in Wind River valley.
There will doubtless be some difficulty with the Indians this summer, but another year will clear them out of this section.— I may say this, however, that no man, young or old, except enterprising, industrious, and prepared to endure hardships and bad fare, need set his face in this direction. True, capital can and does control all existing comforts (such as they are) as well as labor, but not as it does in the States. Every man has hopes of doing something for himself, in this way striking something rich. Men owning the best interests here (worth to them to-day from $25,000, to $50,000) were acquaintances of mine in Montana, and to my knowledge, poor men. The seasons are short enough here; atmosphere light, and air bracing; water pure, creeks and rivers filled with trout, and game abundant in places.
Now, I came here principally on account of my health, having no greater desire than to become strong and hearty, and having, as I think, attained that desire, I should be content, but who is content with what they have. A home and its comforts, are the next and then possibly, wealth. One thing, I find, a man

a family quarrel in the ranks of the party, we havo seen no popular eft'ect resulting therefrom. At tho recent April elections tho Republican party, on a light vote, more than held its own. The Democracy failed to astonish any body or to furnish any tangible evidence of the "great reaction" on that occasion. In fact the "great reaction" is a humbug, and does not exist in Indiana or elsfiwhero that wo know of. With the bad war record of tho Democracy of this State staring that party in tho face at every turn it cannot hope for any speedy favorable reaction It is a corrupt, treacherous and destructive purty, and has so written its own history in this State that it cannot now hope to regain its former power. Everything indicates a healthy and vigorous condition of things inside tho Republican organization and tho reverso with tho Democracy^...jNatwithstanding the swagger and blunter of the Democratic leadors, they have no laith io a party triumph in Indiana this fall.— This is evident from all their movements. They are too craft}- a set of fellows to be mistakon themselves and only hope to deceivo the people by their bragging fcnd self-confidunt manner of entering the campaign. Tho cry of ihf ^gi and reaction' is aboui v••laved ui ir. Indiana.
here without money feels better off than a man there with a little, there is more equality, freeheartedness, &c., than is met with even in the middle States, caused likely, by the dependence on one another. Money here now commands from 10 to 15 per cent, per month, with what is termed good security, and never less than 5 per cent.
From accounts times are generally dull in the States, more from a lack of confidence, I should judge, among business men. The latest we have here is that Andrew the First has been beheaded, decapituted, or something of the sort, which will doubtless influence the value of our national currency, however, in another
respect. I have paid a little attention to politics, though still a "soldier of the Union.'' OSCAR RANKIN. =====

As improved state of affair* teems to be comiDg up in Georgia. Judge Irwin having been nominated for the Governorship by the Central Executive Committee Of the Democratic party, Gen. Meade declared that he was ineligible. Thereupon Mr. Irwin, rery sensibly declined to run, and the Committee, accepting the situation with equAl grace, nominated another man. Gen. Gordon, whom Glen. Meade pronounces eligibly and "who will consequpntly run. This harmony of action is highly creditable to Gen. Meade, who. holding ati' even hand, administers tho law3 withput fear or favor, and so builds hirtiselfup in the confidence of the people under him, and to the Georgians, who appear to be getting a clearer idea uf the fact tbat the shortest road to reconstruction is submission to present authority.— iV.

The latest intelligence on the subject of Senator Yates is that a committee of Republican Senators have notified him that ho must do one of three things, viz 1. Behave himself or U. Resign or 3. Be expelled. A dispatch from Washington says that Mr. ates has just recovered from a severe indisposition. It Ec-eme to havo been very severe this time.
The Chicago Journal, which has been a staunch supporter and ardent admirer of Senator Yates, thus speaks of his present conduct "Our private advices from Washington uie to the efl'ect that United States Senator Yates entirely neglects bis -duties in the Senate. He is intoxicated nearly all the time, day and night, and unless he changes his courso.soon, or resigns, the Senate will expel him. He has not been in his seat once since tbe opening of the impeachment trial, and on several occasions iis vote would have decided important questions. The statement of these painful facts will sadden many of the friends of the once beloved and honored Gov. Yates, who it is now evident, ha3 lost all self-respect, as well as.the respect which is due to his constituents and to the body of which he is a member. If he will not resign, the nooner he is expelled the better. Illinois must be fully represented in the Senate when tha final vote on the impeachment trial is given. The present is no time to trifle with the patience of the Senate, and the people of Illinois are in no tamper to justify, encourage or tolerate the di-graceful course of a drunkard iu a public office of trust and responsibility."

reviewing the
causes which led to impeachment, and speculating upun its result, with a calmness which ought greatly to reassure those among us who fancy that a terrible aassault is being made upon our whole social and political fabric. It says, very justly, that Mr. Johnson has identified himself with tho pro slavery pariy which lod on the rebellion, and that the contest between him and Congress is but the winding up of the struggle which has raged during so many years on the battle-field. Whatever be the result, it predicts that the "present crisis will be solved legally, justly, without any appeal to brutal force, by allowing the free play of republican institutions." Our home-bred alarmists may well stand rebuked before the confidence displayed by this foreigner in the good sense and moderation of the mass of the American people.—N. Y.

Jeff Davis -Not a Bad Idea. It bus been rumored from Washington that Jeff Davis (who, after reporting himself lately at Richmond, and being released till the 2d of May, has sought ai,ain the exile's refuge of tho New Dominion,) has expressed the opinion that with the removal of President Johnson and tbe promotion of "Old lien Wade" to his placc, he, the aforesaid Davis, will report himself no more at Richmond. His reason is said to be that the elevation of Senator Wade to the White House in the manner proposed will be unconstitutional and tbat accordingly, as a stickler for the
and tbat accordingly_ constitution, he (Davis) cannot give hi consent to a trial under W^ade's administration, Very good. The constitution will do, so that Master Davis, with "Old Ben Wade" in the place of Johnson may keep on the north side of the Cana dian line.
An
evening paper thinks that because wo have demonstrated thai the Tenure-of-Offico law anplies to the case of Secretary Stanton, and forbids his removal, therefore President Wade would be compelled to retain in office Secretaries Seward, Mc Cullocli, Welles, Randall and Browning until tho end of Lincoln's term. By no means. The TeRure-of-Office law only forbids the removal of any officer "with out the advice and consent of theSenato.' It was not the Tenure-of-Office law alone but in connection with the refusal of the Senate to give its advice and consent, which prevented the removal of Edwin M. Stanton. In the cases of the other Cabinet officers the Senate may, in the event of Mr. Wade succeeding to the Presidency, consent to a change.-^-AT.

WATCHES
THE BEST!
THE CHEAPEST
r-'J
Lai
int.
The extensive nse of these Watches by Railway Conductors, Engineers, and Expressmen, tbe most exacting class of watch-wearers, has taoroughly demonstrated the strength, steadiness, duratility and accuracy of the Waltham ITatch. Te satisfy that class in all these respects is to decide the qnestion as to tbe real ratae of these timekeeper*.
More than 300,000 are speaking for themselves In the pockets of the people. Imported Watches are made en an expensive torn, in small numbers, bet by numerous makers, and are placed in the market here by an Importer who first secures a MONOPOLY OF SALIC OP SOME OMB MANTJ
FA0TCBE.
To the Manufacturer's profit mast be added Oostof Importation. A Custom-house duty of 26 per cent, payable in Gold.
A profit of at least 25 per cent, to the Importer, another profit to the jobber thus nearly doubling the cost of the imported watch.
At Waltham, Watches are manufactured on a large scale, under one roof and system of supervision and nanaceaent, thereby saving many of the expenses necessarily incurred iu email estab lisiimeuts hsncetheir great cheapness.
Ail iexpectable dealers now sell Waltham Watches and competition, as all the world knows, is favorable to small profit!. The trade is satistie l, because, though the profit on each watch is small, tho demand is large Bad all are saleable.' ynssrnpulona importer! occasionally place' a worthless Swiss imitation in the market. Tb avoid Imposition, the purchaser should invariably demand a certificate of gtnuinenrgs, signnd t»y the treasurer of the American Watch Company—B. ™. BOBBINS.
There are different grades.of finish In the different varieties of Watetiea made by the" Waltham Company, as thor are different sl»es and shapes lo salt all tastes and tnoaas but every Watch tbflftiears the genuine trade' mark of WALTHAM-' Is guaranteed to be a good one, and bobody need be afraid to buy it. Every Watch Fully Warranted.
