As near'as we can ascertain, there are throe classes of Democrats on the finance question, viz: The Seymourilos, who advocate the payment of the Federal bands, principal and interest, in gold, at maturity tfce Pendletoniane, who insist that the principal of the bonds should be paid immediately in greenbacks and the unequivocal Repudiation ist, of the St. Louis pattorn, who would exorcise the highwayman's motto that Might makes Right. How these antagonistic elements are to be harmonized,* unified, solidified into cne affectionate whole at their National Convention to be hold in the City of Now York-on the 4th of July, is not quite clear but something ovidently must be done before the attitude of the Democratic party on the subject of natiocal finances can becomprohended even bv its own mombers.

Monday night produced such a derangement of our telegraphic facilities that we found It absolutely impossible to obtain a full report of tho proceedings had in the Court of impeachment, on Monday. The President's Attorneys appeared^ on the organization of tho Court, as our dispatches showed, and filod the President's answer to the impeachment which is an exceedingly voluminous document of a traverss and dilatory character. At theooncliwion of tho reading of the ans wer, Mr. EVARTS moved a further continuance of thirty days to afford the President time to prepare for the trial. After along discission by the President's counsel and the House Managers, the motion was rejected by a vote of twelve ayes to forty nays. This vote is significant of the temper of Senators respecting impeachment, and was strictly a party vote. Failing to get thirty days, theJPr.$idont'3 flounsal. signified a disposition to-take less-, and a motion to grant ten days was made by S&iator JoH^soN, but pending this motion the court adjourned till yesterday..,

This is tho man who was arrested, it is alleged in Canada, and taken over the lines. There was some publication of corrrspondenci about it a few days ago It seems that Mr. THORNTON had said that he would not ask for the liberation of MCDONALD under the circumstances stated by Mr. SEWARD. This jncites the argor of another MCDONALD, a Sir JOHN, who faid "that it was due to the House of Parliament (Canada) and to tho country" (Canada) that there should be aomQ explanation oi t^a extraordinary and unprecedented coiiduct of the British Ministor at Washington." In 18M ."Mr. Cumbick wkurfv4n/eu4lfc nominated for Congress by his party friends in his large district, and although hb iflWrgf the stump an experienced and able., politician of the opposition and astoduhed both his enemies and friends with his ability as a stump orator. He waa a member of the Thirty-fourth Cotigress, and al-. though the youngest member in the House he soon took high rank as an able debater. His first effort was on the resolution to investigate the frauds in the elections in Kansas, and Horace Greelly, who was then reporter for the New York Tribune, spoke more highly of his effort thaii any other speech made on the question. Ills speech was widely circulated through the leading journals of tho country.

In 1860 he accepted the position of Elector for the State at Large, and Spent the summer in that memorable canvass in Indiana, and by the force of his eloquence contributed a full share to the success of his party. He had the honor, being tbe first on the Electoral ticket, to cast the first Electoral vote of hid State against that "sum of all villainies," the institution of slavery, of which Tie was always a most earnest and sincere opponent.

At the breaking out of tbe rebellion he unlisted as a private soldier, and soon after wns appointed a Paymaster in the *Army, and wss appointed to the charge of a large district, and bad a large number of officers to repoitto bim for duty. He bad the confidence of all the officers, and men in his department. And the troopB in his department were more promptly paid than in any other district in tho country, and when the Government did not send funds fast enough to meet tbe demands of the soldiers, he would borrow money on his own responsibility, and his word was cften taken for a quarter of a million of dollais at tbe banks with no security whatever. He received and disbursed while in tho service, sixty millions of dollars, and so accurately and honestly had ho kept his accountf, that when he asked.tr. bo mustered out he was enabled to /settle his accouuts and balance his books in three days, which was a matter of astonishment to the devotees Wfrid' tape at Washington.

Two years ttgo he was, without his knowledge, nominated by a large cjnvention neighbors to represent tiis county in, the Stale tienate. He was elected, and took his cent in the Legislature for the first time in his life. Sooft after the comnjenfecment of the session he was chosen President of the Senate, .agd bis abiKty and Impartiality wore freely acknowledged by both political friends artdJ opponents. Mr. Cumback's frank, gonial, and hopeful manner, combined with hi? ae kpowhedged ability, always'inspires con fidence among his friends, and constitute him an admirable leader of public affairs.
