the lesser light? of the Democratic press shouted, in ecstatic hilarity, "Great Reaction—Democratic gains everywhere!'» Now, both cities have gone decidedly Republican on a still larger vote. There is room for "a few feeble remarks" from the Democratic press in explanation of th^se he no a

The reputation of the New York Judiciary does not stand beyond reproach. The latest imputation is to be found jn^ a bill in equity filed to restrain a Judee of the Supreme Court from speculating in Railway stock, and from using the pi»cesa o£ his own tribunal for the purpepe of breaking down the operations-of tpe opponents of his own ring. Whether tjio charge be true or false can only be ascertained after in searching inyeetigaUop but this certainly is true, that the Jddfce is in the constant habit of frequenting the office of the brokers who are ongaged jn buying up the stock. On this information the injunction has been granted restraining the Judge from commencing aijy suit, but not interfering with the exercise of his judicial functions. Herd is a singular position of affairs. An occupant pf a judicial position advises the proper form of proceeding and then makes his decision in accordance with the icheme concocted in the broker's office. In other States, the member of a court who would sit in a cause where he had the slightest intorest at .stake, would be hooted from the bench. But the morality of the "coriimercial emporium" is not to be judged by ordinary rules.

Irish Rerorm.

It is generally conceded by intelligent, thinking men of all classos, that unless Eugland changes its entire policy, add that without much furtherdelay, the Irish puople will reach that point whero^ no concession %vhatever will be valued tjy them except as a step toward separation. Many have already reached (hat feeling, ^hon it controls the whole people it will be too late for England to sweep awa!y abuses and the inevitable division will come ndt in peace, but with bitterness anjd prolonged strife.

England cannot hope to hold the Island always by sheer terrorism. She begiiii already to discover that there are lrishmep in her army, on her police, in offices df trust, and crowding in every street or along every railway in the Kingdom, ^nd that terrorism, pushed too far, threatens the veryexistence of English society. A goneral war between the races would nqt bo a pleasAnt thing for Englishmen. Meb alroady begin to realiao that Ireland be so treated as to prevent that kind df insurrection. The wohder is that the

was not seen before. ...»•

For the present there is little hope of any really effective reforms. But whon the now Parliament comes in, elected under the Reform bill recently passed, it is possible that the words of John Bright will not be without weight. The English Liberal leaders seem propared to meet the question bravely and honestly, and there 19 much reason to expect that they wiU soon have a Parliament to sustain then}. If so, the discussion at present going oh will not be lost, for it will prepars&thb public mind for changes which must be made unless England chooses to suffer a^ no other civilized land ever yet has suffered. No humane person can think^of a war between the Saxon and the Celt without a shudder, for, whatever.the result might be, it would involve, suffering and horror and bloodshed that neither Irishman nor Englishman cad desire to witness. Yot it cannot be avoided excoptby concessions which surely offend the English pride, and the concession? necessary to insure peace will become greater with every year of continued oppression.^

Terrible Vengeance.

We published a news item some day^ ago relative to the fearful vengeance wreaked upon the Indians by a resident of Redwood, Minnesota. From several exchanges we obtain further particulars of this strange affair. It seems that in 1861 a family named

Porter

residing at

Redwood was murdered by "the noble Red-men." Of this family, consisting of parents, brothers and sisters and more distant relatives, but one survivor was left—a son. He took a solemn oath jbf vengeance against the race to iqbjo^ the murderers of his kindred belonged. In six years young

Porter

with the assistance of nothing but his trusty rifle, sent to the happy hunting grounds the souls of one hundred

Indian braves. He carries with him a piece of cane .brake, about .twelve inches in length, and whenever he kills an tndian, ho makes a notch in this.' One hundred and eight notches are now to be counted on the piece of cane alluded to, the last one being cut on Christmas, 1866., Surely young

Porter

Porter

has not passed through

all these perilous scenes unscathed. His body has bejn riddled by eleven bullets, and thirfyH|)ffy the knife.

It is now almost a certainty that the great Northern Pacific Railroad will be b»»J& nf CwHfbmi«-Can terest in opposing that enterprise. The lino will be 800 miles distant from the Central Pacific,'and the road can hardly be a competitor of the latter, unless it iq for the Asiatic trade. The Northern Pacific will derive! its importance Witfy from the fact that it will open up for settlement the richest and most attractive countrjr, now unim:io kK the continent as is in our possession.
