of the campaign is the general disposition manifested to have good Republican reading in every family. Much of the strength of the Democratic party is to be found in the fact that daring every political canvass thousands of Democratic papers are sent gratuitously to those who are known to he "irrepressibles." Every Republican voter should see to it tflat his neighbor is supplied with a XJnlon newspaper. It furnishes an element of great power in the campaign. Subscriptions to the Ex PRESS are coming in at a lively rate, but there is room for more.

This process of reducing history to ob lividn. is, a nataral one in tbe minds« men who obtained ignominy alone dur ing the great contest. Another instance has occurred of bank officers refusing to prosecute their defaulting clerks. The City Bank in New Ydrjc, in which institution the robbery was porpetrated, actually instructed the p$ice officers to release the offender from arrest, and permitted the rogue to proceed on his way rejoicing. For what reason this course was pursued, is difficult to be imapined. Can tho transactions of the bank huve been so irregular that the Directors fear a public disclosure of its operations When a porter in a store pilfers the goods of his employer he is at once sent to jajl, but wfierr'the same conduct is repeated by a porson in a more e!evated class of sool ety, and when The losses are greater in amount, then all inquiry seems to be hushed. Probably the sureties of the' bank officers have promised to satisfy ill claims in case the prosecution can be stepped. The defaulter, Leykrick, had befen living for weeks in Detroit under »n assumed name, but his lavish expenditures attracted attention, and discovery ensued. The scamp could not restrain the propensities which caused him to draw upoti bis employers for the means of gratification, and his ploasant vices were thus inade instruments to scourge him.

THE explanation of Andrew Johnson conversion to infamous disloyalty is founjd in his own observation upon the faithlessness to justice of army officers in Tenn see. Mark his words: "We get x^eb command who, under the influence flattery, fawning and caressing, grant pr(|tecUQU.tQrthe rich .tr^tor, while the^odr Union man stands out in the.cold, pushed aside, unable to get a recognition of h^s just rights." This exactly describes what Mr, Johnson has done, and how he, lii ddtfe It. It' wiM our' great misfortune that dignity of character had not grown with dignity of position ta Andrew John
Street.
