Incarnate Falsehood.
When
ANDREW JOHNSON
Tho
accepted a
nomination for the Vice Presidency, ha was not chary of pledges. To win the support of the Northern people, ho utter od extreme radical sentiments, and pledged himself to measures more ultra than any man has dared to propose. He stands pledged to a more thorough radicalism in the work of reconstruction than .any Republican has offered, and to much more. Had not his extravagant language, coming from a Southern man raised a suspicion of his sincerity, his declarations and pledges. would have more than satisfied his supporters. The world knows how shamelessly his pledges have been broken how those who voted for him have been cheated how every assurance given to secure his election has been falsified by his abuse of power thus stolen.
world also knows that this
man, obtaining office upon false pretenses has paved his pathway from that day to this with falsehoods, peijuries and cheats sometimes dastardly and mean, sometimes bold and brazen. Resolving, it would seem, to avenge himself on those •who denounced his drunken inaugural, and feoling that he bad no hope of sup port but from inon to whom a drunken oath was rather a recommendation, he launched into a sea of villainy. Ho cheated his friends, and lied to Republicans \frho
tried to shape legislation to his will He cheated the country, published glarn ing falsehoods in official messages, caused deliberate suppression of all unwelcome
trulb, mutilated dispatches, and slandered the favorite soldier whose patriotism in peace no le-s than his heroism in wa had made him beloved. Mean little false
hoods, of which a cowardly school boy should be ashamed, and great and daring falsehoods which only a madman could hope to make men believe, this man has told, in private and in public, in official papers and in confidential interviews, iintil there is no man in the land who believes his word. Perhaps his meanest was the mutilation of
SHERIDAN'S

of the section. There might be some excuse for a narrow-minded patriotism which claimed super-eminence for the inhabitants of a region, through the effects produced upon their character by a familiarity with tho grand objects of nature, but when a barbarous systom of labor, confessedly harsh and unproductive in comparison with the exertions bestowed upon the work, is eulogized as drawing in i£s train all the blessings of civilization and refinement, such encomiums are worse than ridiculous—they are demoralizing The favoritejillustrations in the Southern papers at present are drawn frorai history of Rome, and, according to their teachings, since Rome held slaves in immense numbers, all slaveholding com munities must oxcel tlioir neighbors to as great an extent as the Romans surpassed tho nations of tho ancient world. The "grace of its courtly citizens" only exist
in tho imagination of the eulogizers, and every student knows that it required the light of Christianity to refine the morals
and subdue tho wicked nature of the nations of tho earth.
The Grander Trial.
Tho St. Louis Democrat says that "while the solemn inquest goes on in the Senate Chamber another and grander trial will take place, not before llfty-#fct Senators in court of impeachment, but before thirty millions of people throughout
tho land." I This is tho proper vfew of the subject, for the accused is the servant of the people. Every American citizen is One of his judges. In the palaces of the rich, and in tho cabins of the poor, by the shores of the Atlantic, by the banks of the Mississippi, and within sound of the pulsations of tho Pacific, in the silent thought of individuals, in the conversa*
tion of citizens, in the, crowded markets, and in the thronged meetings, tho groat trial will go on, day by day.
Tho verdict of the Senate will determine the official career of the accused, but the verdict of the people will pass into history and make him honorable or mfamobs in alljtimo to come. The Senate will decide upon a narrow question of. law, the people will pass upon the whole official conduct of
ANDREW JOHNSON
and will decide
whether such a man ought to continue the President of the United-States In that greater trial, the character and motives of the man will be weighed, his pledges and his performance will be put side by side his opportunities and his ob_ ligations will not be forgotten in judging •of his acts the honor of the nation as welj
49 its law and its safety will be remero. fered and with the whole Executive^ career of

When
ANDREW JOHNSON
approached
the most solemn act of his life, the assumption of the responsibilities of that
high station to which he had been elected, he started from his home in Tennesse#1 surrounded by dissolute men and dissolute women. He took with him to the capital of the natiotf riot and dcbatich. He reeled into office, took his solemn oath with
stammering tongue and shamed the nation before representatives from all the civilized world by the ravings and mumblings of a miserable, driveling drunkurd. For that act he was liable tolmpeachment and
events, have proved that he should have been impeached therefor. The man who can perform his firet, most solemn and most public official act in a! state of intox*' ication may be expected to meet other duties and responsibilities in the same condition. There were earnest and honest men who even then demanded his impeachment, but the policy of partisans prevailed. Cherishing in his heart a malignant spirit, towards those who had bravely denounced his sHameful conduct
that he could nevor recover the confidence of the good and virtuous. HehatfBfever tried. Avoiding personal exposure and disgrace he has shaped his course to become the champion of those who demand neithe# iSrCbe^ndr purity-ifl^flSleader. are glad to learn that Col. Henry
0. Deming, who was much distinguished in the last Congress for his eloquence and power in debate, and who Jwas greatly instrumental in procuring the passage of the act creating the office of Lieutenant General, has £eg$ engaged for„jpjBe time on a life of General Grant.
The terms of intimacy and confidence which subsist between the eloquent author and Grant and his friends—Washburn, of Ills., Gov. Gates and others—give him greater faciljtias in his labor than any other writer could have.
Those who have seen portions of the manuscript speak of it as being written with great power and of absorbing interest.
This will probably be the Life of Grant, for wide and general circulation. We loarn that it win be published by S. S. Scran ton & Co., Hartford, Connecticut, and the National Publishing Ooinpany, Cincinnati, ©hio.

But year by year they do abandon their o#n positions of the previous year, and very frequently adopt iheir stead a platform which would have been regarded as Radical a year or two earlier. It is fty this constant process of "accepting the situation^ forced upon them by tho Republican party, and toning their platforms & adapt them to the victorious march of Republican principles, that Democrats are able to keep just about so close in the rear of the Republican march/ and to maintain their formidable minorities or local majorities. The/deride our music, but are compelled to fall into lino and a it
To TBOSS who look merely at the numerical majorities in closely contested St*:•« like New Hampshire and Indiana, it may seem that the war for right principles is a battle never won. Bnt those who watch the constant change and advance in the principles on which such small' arid dniform majoriteis decide, will see that the battle for the truth is always winning. The stream fem&fns at the fStte hight, but its waters are never again tho samo. The vote does not greatly vary, i»ut the principles and questions on which it is cast constantly change. And this change, during the past ten years will be found to consist in the fact that the Republican party has done everything it set out to dn, constantly advancing to new achieves ments, and constantly winning for its course the approval of the country, while the Democratic party has vainly opposed every successful measure, snd abandoned its opposition only when overwhelmed with defeat. The odds and losses in ,tha last battles of the war were not greatly
different from ihosein the first. But the grand peculiarity of the five years' struggle was that after newly e*ery battle the Rebels retired and the Unidtr armies advanced.
