The County Jail now contains eighteen prisoners.

Charity being the object, everybody should attend the Festival to-night.

We print this morning the articles of association of the Grant Club.

The Post-Office will be in full blast, this evening, at the Festival.

Poor Asylum.—The newSupeiintend-

..A numberof Tableaux, representing Scenes of of "War, are on the Programme to*night, at Dowling Hall. -i

The Board of County Commissioners meet in regular quarterly session next Monday.

Riv. C. A. Brooke, pastor of Asbury Chapel, is put down in the new city directory os ministering to the flock of the "African Church."

ANew England Kitchen and Western Markot, will be some of the attrae tions to-night.

The Rolling Mill will resume operations to-morrow or the day following, having been temporarily suspended by the breaking of some machinery.

James Hisinins was so obliging yesterday as to got drunk, go through the Mayor's court, sinking eight dollars, and

furnishing us the only item from that source.

Cleaning Up I—The principal streets and gutters are receiving the timely attention of Street Commissioner Barrick, who with men, wagons and shovels, is giving them a good scraping.

Tbe Haunted House humbug at the old poor farm has exploded I The foolish story is said to have originated from the pranks of a couple of boys, One family was actually frightened from the house.

Hon. John G. Crain, we learn, addressed a large and enthusiastic meeting

A Special election for the election of Justice of the Peace was held in Lost Creek township last Saturday. It was

warmly contested, and resulted in the election of William Gray, Democrat, over Es^., Myers, Republican, by a reduced majority of thiri«en. Last fall the democratic majority was seventy-five I

Claimed.—Thomas Heathcoe, a farmer residing three miles east of Montezu ma, appeared yesterday and claimed .the four cattle stolen by the two men now in jail, arrested last week on the supposition that the cattle in their possession were stolen. Harvey Thomas on meeting the owner confessed that he and Oliver, the man in jail with him, were guilty of the theft.

The Journal mentions the name of Daniel Miller as the democratic candidate for Trustee of this township. We can see no necessity for a change in the administration of this offico. The present incumbent has proved hu excellent officer, and has become thoroughly acquainted with the requirements of the office. It will take a new man nearly a whole year to acquire the proper knowledge as to a judicious disbursement of the monies entrusted to his disposal.

Supposed Murder 1—The people in the vicinity of "Old Terre Haute," a point three miles south of this city, are agitated at the discovery of the supposed murder of a man. The marks of a terrible struggle, a large pool of blood, and a trail of the same toward the river are plainly discern able. We are informed a thorough search is being made by neighbors for tbe discovery of the body. The murder is supposed to have been committed Satur

day night last.
