The catarrh often creates a perpetual desire to swallow, and gives the feeling, as patients express it "as if something were sticking in the upper part of the throat." Many times the patient can only breathe with, the mouth open.. Upon arising.in the morning a great effort is required to clear the head and throat of the puriform matter which has become secreted during the night. There isocqasionally a feeling of pressure and tight-, ness across the upper part of the nose, and the base of the brain sometimes suffers in such away as to induce headache, vertigo and confusion. The eyes frequently suffer by the catarrh closing the lachrymal duei.{& little canal that carries the tear to the nostril,) causing the eye to matterate. The delicate lining membrane of the lids becomes inflamed' the cornea of the eye becomes dry, shriveled and cloudy, arid if the catarrh is not subdued the sight will soon became impsred. The inflammation sometimes gets into the (Eustachian tithes, the mouths of which are behind and a little above the palate, and extends up the lining membrane to the drum of the ear, causing pain or deafness, and occasionally both. In addition to this catalogue of evils there is oft^n added enlongation of the uvula, soreness of the throat, a cough, loss of appetite, the sufferer becomes Dilious, sallow, dejected, and low in strength and flesh.

The promoting causes of catarrh are too numerous to mention in this already long article. Suffioe it to say that repeated colds in the head, neglected until they become chronic, and scrofulous taint ot the system, are among the prominent causes of this disease. .It often follows scarlet, fever,. canker rash, measles, putrid sore throat, diptheria, &c.

Nasal SStifrh ebnfeiitf f# inflammil^fc, which begins behind and a little above the veil of the palate, and extends upwards, from thence into the nose. The inflammatip.n is not confined to the nasal oaviti^s but extends1' frequently' Co,1 ihe-^iir cavities, called Bt7n«h4 and sinuses, which covgj a considerable portion of the jf^ce, and extend to the_ lower part of the" (orehead.— Persons sometimes feel a& though their whole face were involved in the disease, and W6re almost in a state of rottennea-, so great is the amount of matter discharged from the head. Such free discharges cannot be wondered at when we reflect that all the air cavities ifa the face are lined with the same mucuous membrane which lines the nose,'and th'at they all corqmunicate with the nasal cav« ities., We breathe through.the nose, henc? that part of the mucous membrane bes conies injured, first from sudden changes in the temperature of the air, or from any irritating matter it may contain. The membrane lining the nasal passages also extends downward, lining the throat, larynx and bronchial tubes. The symptoms of catarrh vary id different persons, no two ever being affected exattly alike, and the disease ia met with in various forms and stages. In the first there is merely a discharge of the straw colored mucous, which accumulates in the posterior Hares, or. above and behind theMft palate, and is hawked or cleaned out from time to time during the day. In some cases there are sores formed in side of the nose, and the secretions become dry „#sd hard, requiring almost constant attention to keep the nose free. Then again, a false membrane secreted from the diseued lining, which the patient removes ,• from time to time. In the last stages the secretions from Xhe head drop down iitto the throat. Often the mdcuous membraW becomes ulcerated, and the discharge like pus. When this occurs there is often loss of smell, and the discharge has an offensive odor especially is this the casfe trheii the ulceration eats thlough the membrane and attacks the bone, forming canes' of the bone.
