General Sherman Refustfs

The dispatches state that Gon.Shorman refuses to be used as a tool J, dent The decision is higbK to tnp we eral's credit, and if it results

The object of the President jn bis I a test maneuver i° to put ^al Grant and General Sherman in antagonism. It is a mean man's mean way of wreaking his spite upon an honorable soldier who has escaped his ^ap3. Gen. Grant was placed in the War Office because the President hoped to use him a fight v,itn Congress, instead of becoming a too of the President, General Grant faithfully obeyed the law, and the Presidents trick came to naught. He then tried to blacken the character of the General by charge of treachery and falsehood, but goon found that, his word was worth nouing against that of General Grant. Macdened by the General's quiet but severe rebuke, and maddened still more by a sense of powerlessness to injure him, Mr. Johnson now tries to insult him in another way. The appointment of General Sherman to brevet rank as General and his assignment to command of the new Atlantic district has no other effect and can have no'other object. It is at once the meanest and the most silly attempt _at revenge that Johnson has yet contrived-

The appointment to brevet rank useless and meaningless, except as an attempt to insult that soldier upon whom Congress has conferred the rank of General as a recognition of his services. It is no honor to General Sberman, for be already holds rank higher than any other soldier except Grant, and a brevet conferred for political reasons would only tarnish his fame. It is a pointless and merile revenge, for it cannot hurt Grant, _iat will only make him more honored by those who already honor him, and it is futile a3 it is puerile and empty, for there is no probability that the Senate will confirm it. General Sherman, it is stated, has strongly urged fncnd3 in the Senate to reject the appointment, and the absurdity of the thing should of itself ensure it3 rejection in any ease. But the brevet appointment and the assignment to command of a new district, though parts of the same mean and puerile plan of re* venge, are not necessarily connected.— The President's order would suffice to establish the new district without ratification by the Senate, whether the brevet appointment should bo conflrmod by tho Senate or not. Tho President cannot coHfer the brevet rank without approval of the Senate, but ho can create anew district, and can order General Sherman to command it.

I

The object in this order i3 plain. 11 is intended as an insult to Grant. It can have no other cause, for no conceivable reason can be given for the creation of such a military district, except that the President has not confidence in the Gen eral of the army, and wishes a new oom mander through whom ho can issue orders to commanders of subordinate districts without communicating through General Grant. It is intended as an insult, and perhaps as something more. If the President could entangle Gen. Sherman in political contests, and array him in apparent hostility to Grant and to Congress,'the honorable reputation of the soldier would servo to bolster up his own infamy. If he could induce Gen. Sherman to become the medium through •which he could transmit military orderB to commanders of subordinate districts, he might contrive to embarrass, if not to defeat, reconstruction.

It is most honorable to General SUerman that he relmad to be made tho in. strument of an insult to General Grant It is most honorable to him that he refuses to be made a tool in the President's war upon Congress. Standing resolutely apart from political controversies, the General has maintained the regard aad confidence of men of all parties. It would bo infamous in Mr. Johnson to drive him tc reeigu, rather than become entangled in the President's political Spider-web. But if ho insists upon his order, and meanly demands of the General an act which no true Eoldier would willingly perform, the country will honor Sherman if he clinches his refusal with a tender of his resignation. Mr. Johnson will hardly dare to accept it, and if he did, the people would reBtore the soldier with redoubled honors after single year had passed.—Missouri Democrat.

Dreadful Tragedy at MonroeTille, 0,

[From the Sandusky Journal, 17th.] We have been informed by one of the

Eere

assengers on the train which arrived this noon from Mocroeville, of the most awful tragedy that it has ever been our lot to record. The facts as we learn them, are substantially as follows: Some time ago a convict by the name of Kn owlton escaped from the Indiana State Prison, where he had yet three years to serve. He is a very desperate character, and it seems shot one or two of those who attempted his rearrest in Indiana, and then made his escape from the State. A large reward was advertised for his apprehension, but he evaded his pursuers, and finally turned up in Monroeville, where he secroted himself in a house in the suburbs of that village.

Last Saturday night, Constable Green, of Monroeville, in company with three or four other men, went to tho house where Knowlton was supposed to be secreted for the purpose of arresting him. On arriving at the house, and domanding admittance, Know!ton sang out from the inside that if they persisted ho would shoot them. Without paying any attention to this threat, the door was forced open and the party entered. Knowltou instantly raised a revolvor nnd fired. The ball entered the head of a young man by the name of Levere, whoso parents reside in the vicinity of Centerville, who instantly dropped dead upon tho floor. The bail had entored just above the right ear passing entirely through the head and lodging, under tho scalp on the opposite side.

Tho desperado then fired a secoud tinu at Constable Greeu, the shot taking effect also in the forehead and passing beneath the scalr came oftt nearly ov^r the left ear but without fracturing thu kkull.

Knowlton then made hisescalp rem the house, and stealing the first horso heeoulrt lay hands on, he fled from tho towa.

T. G. SIMMONS, the wife of

Dr. James Simmons, of Richmond, Ya-. and a daugbeter of Lambert Gittings, wealthy Baltimore merchant, was supposed to have died iu Richmond on the 2d of February. Her remains were immediately placed in a coffin aud brought to her father house, on Mount Vernon 8quare, in Baltimore. After opening the coffin the corpse seemed so natural and life-like that an opinion was obtained that •he was cot dead, but in a trance. The cheeks and lips retained natural crimson tint, and it was b«Hev«d that the body indicated warmth and heat. The corpse •was accordingly kept, and closely watched, under the belief of its being

a

trance, and with the hope of life beine restored, but has at last been pronounced dead, and will be buried. It is said that •when first taken sick the physician injected morphine into the veins of the ?{bead. and from that moment the patient bfeil calmly asleep, and is supposed to have died without awakening. The case excited much interest and cariosity. Crape remained on the relatives' doors all the time. .vt

AS tory About ^neral Howard,

A "writer in the Por.^d Press tells the

durinc G.Wsral Sherman's

march to Atlanta, Genei'&l How&tsd had command of the Fourth ofps. Just before tho adyance on Dalt ?n J!, the eorps was in bivouac n^ar Red Clay, two of the boys of an Ohio regiment took it into tbeir heads to go out on a Utile foragingexpedition. It was not long be-, fore their highest ambition, „'ust at that time, was gratified by the Cloture of a "grunter." While in the act of killing the animal the owner discovewd them, and immediately made complaint to Gen. Howard, who happened to be riding leisurlv along the scene of the slaughter.

He told the G.net*! it was the only hog he had, and he thought the boys should either let him have the hog or pay for it The General said he thought so too. He rode to where the boys were, and the following diologue ensued:

General—"Have you any money, boysf If vou take away this man's hog you ought to pay him for it."

Soldier—"No, General, we have no money—fcavn't been paid for four or five months, and we stand in great need o£ the pork. ....

General—"What do you call, iir, a iasr price for your hog?" Citizen—"Well, I should think about nine dollars would do.

General—"B^ys, what are your names, and what regiment do you belong to? I'll put your name in my memorandum and pay this man for bis hog. Next payday I expect you will call at my headquarters and settle the account."

Soldier—''Thank you, General. Well do it if it takes the last cent.J: The boys wore heard afterward to declare frequently, that they looked upon that as ona of their honest debts, and that it should be paid if they lived. When the next pay-day came, however they and the General were quickly sa,® fctod. Tt« Fourth Corps, under Gen. Stanley, was in Tennessee, confronting Hood and Gen. Howard was in command ot the Army of tbe Tennessee, and on the march with Sherman to Savannah.

The war was soon closed, the-members of the regiment scattered, and there is no report yet whether tne pork bill has been settled or not-

Tiie Secret Confessed.

The National Intelligencer reveals the motive with which the country had already credited Mr. Johnson, in attempting to advance General Sherman to the mnk of the Brevet General of the army. It says that "the President desires the appointment of a soldier to be of equal rank with Genaral Grant, in whose hands, under circumstances of great peril to the Republic, its safely would be better assured than it now is."

This is as much as to say that in case of a forious conflict between the Legislative and Executive Departments, the "President deBires another able General of equal rank, in order that, by equally dividing the military power, there may bo a chance for success in a bloody battle II We are inclined to think that one General is enough, and that it would be bet ter to settle all differences either way without another civil war, since tho settlement would be corrected so soon a6 tbe people couid again oome to the ballot box.

The Intelligencer, being the organ of the President, thus confesses tor him- the deliberate intension of at least runnings the risk of bloodshed. But thanks to the good sense and" patriotism of General Sherman, be ravoltb at the plot, and tells his friends in the Senate to look to the safety of the Republic, and continue to frustrate Mr. Johnson's bloody designs

The Marvels of Greatlve bklll,

Everywhere about us lie the marvels of creative skill, and so accustomed are we to their presence that they almost fail to attract observation. The air we breathe,—the clear medium through which all things are seen,—how wonderful it is, still or in motion, it is the highway of sound, bringing the voices of friends, the music of birds, the mur« muring of breezes, the monotone of the wild waves. Through it we see the stars v/'a ich roll beyond its subtle presenee by its motion the clouds are floated in silent majesty across the horizon, and on its invisible wings are wafted the incense of the flowere.

How welcome to the heated brow, tho tired brain, are its gentle adminiatra* tico, how soothing its presenee among the thick leaves of the trees, whispering to them as it were of some calmer life than ours, and bearing the soul away from its cares and sorrows to a region which no fears, regrets or sorrows Inhabit How suggestive is its first Warm spring, breathings, after the desolation of winter! How majestic its utterance in the thunder and the storm!* How powerful, how irresistible in its wrath.

How grand, how beautiful, how terrible is the Bea that compasseth the whole earth. The ciicuit of its water acknowledges no limit. The waves take to themselves the warmth of the tropics and bear it northward and southward to counteract the reign of frost and ice In tbeir loag journeying® they circle around either pole but know no weariness nor rest.

These same far wanderers come and leave the sanus at our feet, show their light foam wreaths to our admiring gaze, murmur the softest lullabya to listening ears, reflect in ther tranquility clouds and stars, and speak to us with more than human eloquence of the hand that created them and controls-

Of the wondrs encompassed in this world of waters how little is known, and yet who can doubt that its marvels eqnal those of earth and air. Animal and vegetable life have their countless representatives in their depths, and beauty holds its court where the sun never shone, nor even the imagination of man ever visited.

When we gaze into star-lit skies, ail around and beneath us seems overshadowed by the magnificence above.— Bright words' to us but points of light, roll in infinite space. They are countless as tbe sands on the shore, yet each has its path and knoweth its place in this field of unimaginable extent^Sunstand worlds, God himself leading them in their majestic march, they shine down upon us through the in Unite blue, and speak to us of wonders that no man can comprehend or explore.

How should we miss their beautiful presence where they are no more seen when the voii of darkness drops upon the earth. They come with their messages of light and glory, everpresent witnesses, of God's love and care. By them the sailor steers upon tho pathless ocean, by them the adoring heart ascends to the throne of tho Eternal "Verily God doeth wonders on the earth. Atali seasons, wherever we torn, are-ibe constaut. manifestations of his presence. Wherever we hant in speechless admira* tion over the peerless flowers, or mark the unfolding leaf, the springing grain, we see the impress of his creative skill Mosseovertsd rocks, Abe monarobs of the forest, giirclincj, complaining brooks and the flow of broad rivers all wear his signet.

He has not left himself without witnesses in tbis great treasure-house of Lis wonders and man need notaeek, only recognize them. It is but to open his eyes and bo satisfied to listen is to hear to comprehend, though but in part, is to be wise.

Let us then make this outward world the sanctuary intended by God, a refuge from our sorrows ond trieli, a resource that none but He who gave can

away._

In aoceptiner Agents, great caro has been exercised to appoint those wto, by long-continued fair dealing, have acquired a- reputation for honesty, responsibility, and probity—men in" whose word the public have learned to place confidence. These Agents have agreed to keep a fall assortment of my pens, and to sell them at my publishedprioes. Thus the public are aupplled bythem with just such pens as they want, either aa to writing or price, and get a full equivalent for "the money

No agent is appointed to travel from plaoe to place, or canvass the country, so that all who want a .Morton Gold Fen must get It from tha Local Agent or from headquarters. __

None need apply for the Agancy except In conformity to the above, the liberal discount "To Clubs" being sufficient inducement to all others.4
