ABOUT THE BACHELOR who 5s supposed to know all about it, has said that "in tbe vast field of human affection, tho old bachelor is the very scarecrow of happiness who .drives away tie little birds of love that came to steal Iwiv the little hemlock seeds of loneliness and despair. Where is there a more pitable object on this earth than a man who has ho amiable woman interested in his welfare. How dismal does his room appear when becomes home at night, weary and hungry a barren table, and a lonely pillow, which looks like the white urn of every earthly enjoyment. See the old bachelor in the afternoon .of life, when his heart is sinking to ftssundracce! "Not a solitary star of memory gleams over his opening grave. No weeping wife to bend like a comforting angel over 4y-ng pillow and wipe the death-damp from hia brow. No fond daughter to draw hiB chilly hand into the .soft j^essure of her own, Rnd warm his icy blood with jthe reviving fires of availing affection. No manly boy to link his breaking name with too golden chain of honorable society, and bind his history in the vast v^J^aea of the world he is leaving fop&veasjf He has eaten and drank, and drank and died and tbe earth is glad sho has got rid of him, for he had little else to do tfian1 cram his soul into the circumference of a sixpencei and no human being, save his washerwoman, will breathe a sigh at his
confidence. I was encouraged to apply for the place and was almost M&ured of DUCCCSB. 1 «F-E led to believe that the choico from among the many applicants would be made with a strict regard to individ'Al qualifications and merit. Under this impression I went to Terre Haute last Saturday to present myself boldly to the Board "f Commissioners supposing that they had the entire power and were
men cf sufficient good judgment to make & selection without .any outside pressure When I came in sight of the Court Honse I beheld an immense crowd of men and
wondered what it could mean. I thought it could not be election day Shows do not come round in Winter and there was not noise enough for a fight but on coming nearer I found the excitement arose from the Board of Commissioners meeting as per agreement -to let the Superintendency of the Poor Asylum.
Imagine my surprise atj. .finding about fifty competitors all.,* armed to the teeth with their ^4ig
lawyers, Auditors, recommendations
and influential friends. As each Commissioner was bsset on all sides, being plucked here and there for private conversa. tion in *3 many as three directions at the
same, time, and I being a vory modest countfy-jako not accustomed to elbowing myself through such large crowds, 1 could not get a. chapqg^Q,p.^, ip.a yvord edge
ways. When tho candidates were called upon to state their qualifications, one said he had been raised a farmer and could hoe onions, pole beans, worm tobacco, &e. another had superintend^ J,ha hatcl$ing. and feeding of chickens,"geese a$d duwts .- a third used to mind the old ^xe while she Suckled hor jUmb^-and coulfr'tlriro the

applicants. Just before my time came I was trying to fix up some good reason why I should be appointed, but could think of nothing, save a three years SOTVico in tho Union army, wLeii'a friend beckonftd me to one side anVi told me he though I had better say nothing? about that, because tho Com,niR9onjE8rs| would considor my connection with the late "unpleasantness" as rather a dark spot in my history. So having nothing else to recommended me I subsided, for I
thought. I could discover on the countenances of the Bosrdh kind Of dignified satisfaction which led me to believe jhjt the whole thioj* was already cujt dried. .)• VF n~r7
If I bad ha3 the least idea that sn&iitd not be successful, I would have withdrawn tny name in favor of the Hon. Commissioner from my township for two reasons, vi:: First, because of his eminent business oapacity *&£ general intellK
genee second, on the groiihd of ecbno my. The latter reason, perhaps, I had better explain. He iaving already been appointed to superintend the fencing in of the Asylum, and being a competent physician, there is no good reason why he. couid not act as Commissioner, physician, superintend the poor and the fence with less expense to the county than would bo required to employ man for each, thereby dispensing with the necessity of the Board meeting about once a week and hiring livery carriages to ride out and look after the interests of thr
paurpxrs.
Yours, dispondingly,
