no two ever being aiFected exactly alike, and the disease is met with in various forms and stages, tn the first there is merely a discharge of the straw colored muceus,. which accumulates in the posterior nares, or. above and behind tho soft palate, and is hawked or cleaned out from ^me to time during the day In some cases there are Bores formed in side of the nose, a^d the secretions, become dry ani hard!, requiring almost constant attention to keep the nose free. Then again,' a false membrane secreted from the diseased lining, which the patient removes from time to time. In the Jast stages the.secretions from the head drop down into the' throat. Often the tnucuoUs membfaae becomes ulcerated, and the discharge like pus. "When this occurs there it often lose of smell, and the discharge has an, offensive odor—especially is this the case when the ulceration eats thiough the membrane and attacks the bone, forming caries of the bone,
The catarrh often creates a perpetual desire to swallow, and giveF the feeling, as patients express it

were sticking in the upper part of the throat." Many times thejjatient can only breathe with the mouth open. Upon arising in the morning a great effort is require*!"1to clear the head and throat of the purifuim matter which has become secreted during the night. There is occasionally a feeling of pressure and tight* ness across the upper part ofthe nose, and the base of the brain sometimes suiters in such away as induce headache, vertigo and confusion. The eyes frequently suffer by the catarrh closing the lachrymal
little canal that carries the tear to
the nostril,) causing the eye to matterate. The delicate lining membrane of the lids becomes inflamed' the cornea of the eye becomes dry, shriveled and cloudy, and if the catarrh is not subdued the sight will soon became impsred. The inflammation sometimes gets into the auatachian tubes, the mouths of which are behind and a little above tbe palate, and extends up tho lining membrane to the drum of the ear, causing pain or deafness, and occasionally both. In addition to this catalogue of evils there is often added enlongalion of the
uvula,
soreness of the throat, a cough,
lose of appetite, the sufferer become* bilious, sallow, dejected, and low in strength and flesh.
The promoting causes of catarrh are too numerous to mention in this already }on{rtxticle. Sufficc it to say that repeated co life in the head, neglected until they become chronic, and scrofulous taint oi the system, are amobg the prominent causes of this disease.
It often follows scariet fever, canker rath, measles, putrid sore throat, diptheria,
