JoHS&QN "wanted Graiit tS Bock the War office door against Stanton. "Why, thef, did he noi order Grant to do so Mr. Johnson knew very well that passage in the Tenure of Office act which punishes with fine and imprisonment any one who resists its enforcement. Gad he ordered Grant to keep the War office doors shut, Mr. Johnson would have violated the law and subjected himself to its penalties. Therefore, with what will seem to every honorable man not a very creditable cunning, he did not order Grant to do so, but tried to entrap him into a promise to do so en his (Grant's) own account.

THE Cincinnati Times thinks Mr. EGGLESTON, in his bill authorizing the con. Btruction of a road from Washington to Cincinnati, is probably not so foolish as to suppose the general Government will mako an appropriation for that purpose.

What his bill really means wo are at a loss to conjecture. It is said that his plan is to build a road from Cincinnati up the Ohio river to Big Sandy or Point Pleasant and thenco directly to Washington, either by the Chesapeake & Ohio route, or by way of Grafton and the Baltomore and Ohio Railroad. It is very desirable to have such a route, but capitalists won't buiid it, and theso who dream of Congressional aid will be disappointed-

THE following racy slcctch ol the life and public services of the mamb«r ol Congress from the FiUh Now York District Is from tH'e pen. of BEN. PERLE* POORE "JOHN MORKISSEY, or'New York, was born in Tipperary eouuty, Ireland, February 12, 1831, came to

Worked as a moulder" fills up the gap in JOHN'S life between school days and Congressional honors. He was "working as a moulder' when he had HEBNAN in hand, and no ono can complain that he neglected to "polish off" the subjects ol his skill.

THE Chicago Tribune says SEYMOUR'S withdrawal (if it be not a sham,) leaves three names almost equally prominent in the list of Copperhead candidates—PENDLETON-, HANCOCK and JOHNSON, but

thinks the stubborn opposition to PENDLETON in the East has rendered him unavailable, while HANCOCK has been nearly^smothered by the President's ridiculous message to Congrose, setting him up for a second WASHINGTON, and asking a vote of thanks for him. Tho Copperhead newspapers may sneer at JOHNSON now, but he stands a better chance of securing the nomination of their Convention than

any other man betwoen the oceans. It is sheor affectation for them to pretend to be better than he. They are neither better nor worse. For whatever vitality the Democratic party can boast to day it is

indebted to ANDREW JOHNSON. The consideration of gratitude does not go very far, it is true, in a nominating Convene

tion, but Mr. Johnson presents in his own person the most perfect type of Copperheadism that tho country affords. It they wish to nominate their representative man, the ex-Aldornian of Greeneville, Tennessee, will bo thoir candidate.

CONGRESS has been petitioned to pass an act legalizing contracts for the payment of money which, by the agreement of the parties thereto, are to bo satisfied in gold. Cases are daily occurring where, unless BUch an agreement is made, the borrower cannot succeed in procuring a loan. Recently a ship-master, whose vessel had been seriously injured at sea, put into one of the West India ports, where he borrowed funds in gold in order to ioa pair his storm-beaten craft. On arriving at New York a dispute sroee which had to be referred to tho United States Dis. trict Court for adjustment. Judgment for the full amount of the loan was given in favor of tho lender, but no allowance was made for the difference in value between gold and tho legal tenders in which tho owner of the vessel was permitted to pay the claim. Tho effect of this decision will prove highly injurious to American merchants in foreign pyrts. Not only will tho men who intend to take advan, tage of the difference between the two currencies be prevented from borrowing, but tho merchants who intend to carry

out their contracts in avery particular will be placed in tho same unpleasant predicament. Such occurrences should influence Congress at least to land a patient ear to the petitioners.

Among the Types.

[From the Saturday Evening Mirror, by "A Decayed Journalist."] Among the curiosities of typography nothing is more curious than the facility with which the wretched little compounds of lead, and antimony, called types, get into the wrong places, and insist on spelling out tho most amusing and absurd things. To be sure, this is often the fault of the printer, and oftener of the author, but the nature of the wicked bits of metal is so perverse that no one can be long among them without being convinced of the total depravity of inanimate things. Thefmore ridiculous of these blunders never see the light of day, and the outside world remains in ignorance of them, except when some one of the initiated lifts the veil, as J. N. has it. Occasionally some of them eludo the sharp eyes and pancil of the proof-reader, and appear in public like escaped lunatics, to the consternation of authors and the mirth or wrath of readers. The wonder is that their number is so small, when it is remembered that a compositor frequently handles as many as sixty thousand types in a single day or night that the writer is sometimes very sleepy, and sometimes (tell it not in Gath) very drunk that the proof-reader must read with great rapidity, and with a multitude of other duties clamoring fer performance that correct tions and revisions must be made in the hurry and bustle of going to press, with perhaps but five minutes of titae left to make the early mails. Add to this the fearful ohirography of writers for the press in general, and the marvel is that anything passes through it all and comes out intelligible.

I Btarted out to note, for the benefit of your readers, a few of the typographical blunders and absurdities which have come under my own observation during ten years of intimate acquaintance with types and typos in Indianapolis, but can not refrain Irom introducing, by way of beginning, a whole brood of blunders hatched in a single nest, that came near extinguishing the late Fitz Green Halleck in his younger days. He had written an ar-. tide for a morning paper, in which he used the familiar quotation from Shakspeare: '"Ti» tme,'tis pity, 3*

And pity 'tie, 'lia true."

The stupid typesetter made it read: 'Tia t»o, 'tis fifty, 'Xij fifty, 'tis fifty-two I think that can not be equalled* 6V Dick Johnson himself, who has the repu» tation of standing at the head of his profession for lelicity in blunder making, though some of his best efforts are nearly as good. Those who witnessed it will not forget the minglpd_rage and mirth, of Captain Bracken, when he read an elaborato puff he had written of some war panorama, in which he had glowingly pictured the fight between Merrimac and the Monitor.' Dick had "set it up" and it had gone to press without proof, and read, "The contest between the mantae and the minister was indeed terrific 1"

Bart. Jones, I believe it was, who wrote up an agricultural ffcirj describing the delight of a Yankee, wbov cc»tning suddenly upon a heap of golden pumpkins, exclaimed—'"Eap®to 1 Sawkarrlft the next morning's paper Dick made him say "Sucker!" Sucker

Sometimes a blunder fastens itself upon its perpetrator, like a very "Old Man of ^he Sea," and thenceforward clings to him as his proper name. When tho name of tho since famous Garibaldi first found its Way conspicuously into print, a compositor on the Sentinel could not make it out, 4nd asked the foreman to decipher it. The latter, not well up in Italian pronunciation, gave the first letter the sound of '(J." It appeared in proof as "Jerry £awldy! in stead of Garibaldi, and Jfche unfortunate typo still wears the name of Jerr*T¥Pa|Fr BLaffin^Tnlt Whofied years

The telegraph is responsible for some riiost perplexing errors. When the lines (^reworking badly, and tho night operator is half asleep, it often occurs that but the faintest suggestion of the meaning of Whole sentences remains, to be made into qews or nonsense by tho printer. Ia aoaeptins Agents, great care has been exercised to appoint those who, by long-continued fair dealing, have acquired a reputation for hojiaaty, responsibility, and probity—men in whose word the public have learned to place confidence. These Agents have agreed to keep a full assortment of my pens, and to sell them at my published prices. Thus the public are supplied by them with just such pens as they want, either as to writing or price, and get a full'equivalent for the money
