TRAGEDY NEAR CHESTERFIELD, III.

A Woman Killed by Her lover. From tbe CarllnviJIe (111,) Democrat, Jan., 28. Near tho close of the uftornoon of Tuesday, Jan. 21,

a ptiuiful ancl deplorable

tragedy transpired in the west part of the country, which has occasioned a good deal of oxcitement in and about Chesterfield, and will result in a very interesting trial at tbe'next term of the circuit court,

One Miss Dorlesky Loper, said to be a young lady of rare and fascinating beauty (a daughter of A. "W. Luper, a substantial farmer near Chesterfield), was wooed and won by Mr. Winthrop Sherman They were married, and, as far as we know, lived happily. But the husband soon died, leaving her with one child. Her undiminished beauty attracted tho atten tion and won the heart of a young brother. After a suitable time had elapsed, her grief was assuaged by a marriage with Sherman No. 2. He, in due time, followed his brothor beyond the portals of time, leaving, we believe, a playmate for the child of his brother. The young widow, liking the Shermans, resided with the family of her husbands' father, Mr. B. M. Sherman, near the western limits of the county, up to a recent period. Her brothers, it seems, were very anx ious, and used every effort to induce her to return to their roof, and at last sue ceeded. They fitted her up a home and were unsparing in their efforta to promote her comfort. Previous to Mrs. Sherman's leaving the home of her father-in-law, the uaEUsceptable heart of William Sherman a younger brother of her two former husbands, was touched by her unfaded beau-

A mutual attachment sprang up between them. The brothers of the fair young widow were not pleased with the affair, and labored hard to break off the proposed match. Probably William was once ordered off from the premises where she was living, by her brother, Mr. Gideon Loper. At all events, a good deal of hard feeling existed between them, and perhaps some threats were uttered by one of the parties. William, it seems, persuaded the lady to leave her brother's and return to his. father's. It was suppased that William would' soon become the third husband of hisj brothers' widow. This brings us down to Tuesday evening, the 21st. On that day William Sherman, with the fascinating Mrs. Dorloaky and her two children, were visiting some friends in the vicinity of Chesterfield. On their return home just before ight, when near the residence of Mr. Tap. Ibbotson, on the Fayette road, three and a half miles west of Chesterfield, they met Mr. Gideon Loper, with a load of 'iVood, walking behind his wagon. Sherman turned out, giving fully half the road according to all accounts. Mr. Loper, whether intentional or not we do not know failed to give as much ot the road as the law requires, and his hind wheels locked with Sherman's. We do not know that any words passed between them, but about this time Loper seized a polo from his wagon, and Sherman drew a revolver. The pole came in contact with Sherman's head, and the pistol in his hand went off about the same time, a slight contusion from the blow being the only result produced. Loner's horses started, and he, in attempting to' stop them or get behind the wood, missed two more shots from Sherman's pistol.

Just then Sherman's horse started, and he stooped down to grasp the reins which had previously fallen from his hands, the revolver stiill in his grasp. The horse giving a sudden jerk, in some way threw the revolver into such a position that, in going off, the contents were thrown into the breast of Mrs. Dorleskey, the ball penetrating near the heart, severing an artery, and produoing almost instant death. The warm heart blood of tho dying young mother spirted over her innocent, tender children, sitting at her feet. She was immediately removed into the house oi Mr. Ibbeston, and there breathed her last. Thus passed away the sister of one, and the intended wife of tbe other principal actor in this death tragedy.

Young Sherman no doubt terrified at tha terrible result of his conduct, fled to his father's house and wont to bed. He appeared to be in great excitement, and the only words that his family could get from him were: "I've killed Dorl"^

He was arrested and a preliminary examination had before Justice Lawson and Loomis, of Chesterfield, who refused to admit him to bail. On Friday last he waB brought to this city and committed to the county jail for trial at the nest term of the circuit court.

OrJgluJor Eminent Men.

Some of our newspapers are fond of placing bofore the public the origin of rich men. We think the poor ones should have a chance so we relate the follewing briof facts for the encouragement of others:

John Smith was the son of his father. He formerly resided in Stroke Pogis, and other places but ho has moved to the Penitentiary now.

William Smith was theson of bis mother. This party's grandmother is deceased. She was a woman.

John Brown was the son of old Brown The body of the latter lies moldoring in the grave.

Edward Brown was the son of old Brown by a particular friend. Henry Jones was tho son of a seacook.

William Cannon was tho son of a gun. John Jones was a Son of Temperance. In early life Gibiral Jones was actually a shoemaker. He is a shoemaker yet.

Previous to the age of eighty-five, Calob Jones had never given any evidence of extraordinary ability. He has never given any sinco.

Patrick Murphy is said to b9 of Irish extraction.

THE

well-known Elijah Pogram was

elected to Congress, and is heard from frequently. The last thing said by Pogram was not his least expressive, by any means. He remarked, on Monday, that no''wanted to heave tho British lion taught that tho time was past when he could trample on Amorican citizens. The members of the house would be unworthy «f being American citizens if they slept one night while their flag was being Jowered. and while the bird which should soar was in the gutter beneath the ignoble foot that tramples on it."

Mr. Pogram seems anxious that the bird should -'soar." If the bird is in the gutter, and under an ignoble foot, or any other kind of afoot in trampling on it, it is probably a sere bird. Perhaps the difference between sere and sore is too broad to suit Mr. Pogram.

Mr. Pogram should be 'comforted with the fact that, if the bird cannot soar, he can. He soars beyond the "setting sun." He is "a child of freedom," and his 'home' is a good deal higher than what it was when he spoke of himself to Martin Ohuz1 ziawit.
