know, is atraitorto thosa who elected him. You know that the life oi a President who should treat the Democratic as he treated the Republican party, would not be safe for an hour."
IF a sufficient number of snowballs could he collected to heat a baker'e oven, •we might by counting them, ascertain how many Buch tricksters as A. JOHNSON would be required to concur in a statement, in order to refute the word of an honest soldier like GRANT.
BOGY, of St. Louis, in in
troducing the cowardly pirate SEMMES on the occasion of a recant lecture by the latter in that city, said bo deemed it an honor to have the pleasuro of introducing to a St. Louis audience, Admiral RA PHAEL SEMMES, of the late Confederate navy, [loud applause] whose virtues as a man, and whoso scholarly attainments were not surpassed by the world-wide reputation he had achievuk as a bold, accomplished and intrepid commander.
WE are exceedingly glad to learn that a question of great importance has been settled without agitating the foundations of the governmental or social structures At a recent meeting of tha Board of Com. missioners of the House of Refuge (one of whom is a sound Democrat), tbo question j\s to the color of the inmates arose on an application ircm Wayne county. The Board decided that the law authorizing the'Institution made no distinction as to the precise shade of the applicant's tex turo and therefore tboy would Rot. How ever, some arrangement will be effected by which the colored and white boys will not be so promiscuously mixed as to work harm to either.
IT is gravely stated in our astern exchanges that books have been opened in Now York for subscription*to the stock of a Life Insurance Company which proposes to insure the lives of persons who adopt the Homeopathic system of med icine at rates fifteen per cent, lower than is done by other companies. Wo wonder what school of theology is regarded as the most favorable to longevity?
As to political life risks the anti war Democracy are regarded as the worst class. The records of Insane Asylums show that many hundreds of this laction have been consigned to such establish** merits fey "fear of draft,' and mortuary statistics prove that it still greater number have shaken "oiF this mortal coil" for the same cause. Sedentary habits, such as close attention to JJOBD & Go's. "Sunday School" literature, sadly impaired many a Democratic constitution during tho years of their terrible affliction.
Hoy. A. P. EDQERTON, the caudal UP* pendage of the great Democratic bond* holders' kite, of which PEHDLETON and HKNDMCKS uro respectively the bead atld center, has been scorched out of the position in which he undertook to intrench himsolf. A few days ago he took up the pen with apparentlp great satisfaction to show the pre eminent fitness cf a bond' holder—one who had taken advantage of tho necessities of tha Government &nd speculated on our national miseries to the tune of 198,000, net profits—as a candidate on the Democratic ticket. Finding his position untenable, attacked by the Republican press, alarmed by the tremulous tones and shaking knees of his own party organs, ho has retreated or backed down, with all the dignity and grace usually attending the movements of a crawfish. This humiliating failure haB deeply chagrined the Democracy and will doubtless convince Mr. EDGSBTON that he is not destined to achieve unbounded success as a letter writer. He would do well to remove to Indianapolis and put himself, during the campaign, under the dry-nursing of that eminent manipulator of party cordage who dug out from long obscurity, tbe ''invincible" A. as "the very man for the crisis."
Foreign Xotes.
Lord Hobart has a manly communication in tho last received London Times on tbe settlement of the Alabama claims.— He sayB that unfriendly relations are now established between England and the United States by tho refusal of Lord Stanley to permit the recognition of tho rebels as boligerents to be considered as a part of the case to be arbitrated upon.—Lord Hobart then Rays "In the protocol* appended to the Declaration of Paris in 1856 there stands recorded, on tbo part o^ the four groat Powers signataries of tha^ declaration, the unanimous expression of a hope that in futuro nations will, before declaring war, refer the matter in dispute to tbe judgment of a neutrnl State. It was the British Miuistor who proposed that momentous paragraph it tho British Government that now, on the opportunity for applying it, protests against its npplU cation."
Rev. Newman Hall, in a lecture giving incidents of his American tour, said in regard to Queen Victoria's letter to Mrs Lincoln, after the death of tbe Lite Presi" dent, it was explained that it had not b«on published because, as iL filled three pages, and was "the outgushing of a wcman's hoartfelt sympathy," they thought it would be wrong to publish it. Mr. Hall thinks this was a mistake. It is a pity, he remarks, that from motives false delicacy a document should have been withheld fcom tbe public which would have contributed moro than any thing else to restore friendship between the two nations.
Tha Paris correspondent of the Independence Bslge, writing on the 14th gays: 'There is much t&lk of a manifesto attribute to Prince .Napoleon. This manifesto ought to have appeared, if we may credit the s&me rumors, either in the SUcUor Opinion Rationale. But those two papers deemed it prudent not to pabli»b this document. According to report,
the tendency of ,«say is extremely Democratic. The Umperor's cousin pronounces tor home lil^ty, or a grand natienal war. In the latter case the option of tho Erince would rati.Ner ^or
a war
against Russia, with the alliance of Prus
sia.'' A new pamphlet has appeared in Pans under the title of "The Papacy ard Italy the Necessity of a Congress." Tbe authorship is attributed to no lew a person than General Montebello, who command* ed the French troops at Rome for five year?, and as the General is aide-de-camp to the Emperor, it is probable that it has been written and published with His
Majesty's assent and approval. The final vote on the Army bill in the French Legislative Body was given in favor of the Government by a large majority of 199 to 60. The opposition was much larger than had been anticipated.
Garibaldi has written a letter in which he says "I conclude that the Ottoman domination inflicts less injury upon Greece than the priestly upon Italy, and that the Greek has been able to preserve more of human dignity under Islamism than the Roman under Popery. Both being tyrants and imposters, the worst is the Josuit."
INDIANAPOLIS LETTER.
THE APPROACHING STATE CONVENTION SECRETARY OF STATE—MORE CANDIDATES—MESSES HENDRICKS AND KD-
GERTON—PEDDLERS NOT ADMITTED— ALSO ANOTHER OFFENSE—ETC.
INDIANAPOLIS, February 6th, 1868. It is easily to be seen, from the preparations that are being made, and other indications, that the 20th of February Convention will be one of the largest ever held in the State. Already a large cumber of rooms have been engaged in each of the leading hotels, by men from all parts of the State, and it will not be long before every desirable place will be spoken lor. It is a matter of serious con cern with those who have the management of preliminary affairs, that there is not a hall in tho city that will fully accommodate a Convention as large as this promises to be. If the delegations are full, Morrisou's Opera Hall will be crowded to its utmost capacity, and there will be no room to spare for spectators, of which Indianapolis gencr* ally furnishes a full quota. Miller's new Hall, on Illinois street, will easily accommodate three thousand people, but that is unfinished and can hardly be mado comfortable. In any event, delegates will bo provided for, and the rest may have to do as the bound boy did at the shucking stand back.
Most of the railroads have consented to sell lialf-l'are tickets, though some ot them require certificates of attendance to be shown on the return trip, an exaction that will load to much annoyance and confusion, and do very little good. The Chairman of the State Central Committee, however, has made arrangements to supply the Chairmen of Delegations with ccrtilic.-ttes for distribution to those in attendance.
Any information concerning tickets, certificates, etc., can be obtained by ad» dressing J. T. Wright, Chairman of the State Central Committee, or by applying at the rooms of the Committee at tbe time of the Convention. Rooms will be provided for the primary meetings of tbe several delegations, and public notice of the places assigned to each wiU be given in the papers, so that there will be no trouble when the delegations arrive.
SECRETARY OT STATE.
Colonel K. G. Shryock, of Fulton county, seams to be the coming man as candidate for Secretary of State. Inaamuch ai the Secretary would, in a certain contin gency, become Governor, it will bo wall for the Convention to select a man who has eminent qualifications and ability.— These Colonel Shryock has, besidss an honorable war record and the popularity awarded to those who prove themselves by their good deeds. He is withal an ex-, calient stump speaker, an item which cannot be ignored In the formation of a ticket. OTHER CANDIDATES—STILL THET COME.
The Indianapolis
journal
just now
largely occupied with communications in behaif of a thousand and one candidates for State otScee. The notices bring to light a large number of unrewarded persons whose past services should now be recognized by nomination to office. It is really surprising to see how many men there are whose legal ability and other qualifications especially fit them for the office of Reporter of the Supreme Court, a position whicn really requires a man of undoubted ability, and, if anything, a surplus of legal acumen. Alas for the candidates, only one can be re-elected but tho rest can console themselves with the reflection that they came to the surface, and were for a time the objects of painful solicitude.
THE BONDHOLDER DEMOCRATS.
The Demooracy are getting worried over tbe stuizts of their bondholder candidates for Governor and Lieut. Governor. Tho well.sustained arguments of tho Republican press are a little too many for thorn, and they either sit sullenly quiet, or strike out wildly in making reply.— In addition to the irreconoilable position of Messrs. Hendricks and Edgerton on tho bond and greenback question, there are some nice bits of history in regard to Mr. Edgerton's relation to the Wabash and Erie Canal which will come up for examination during the campaign. It would not do to train every battery on tho Democratic State ticket at once, you know. "NO ADMISSION FOR PEDDLERS."
Tno above sensible inscription appears beside the door of a private dwelling on Alabama street in this city. Whether it serves the purpose of protecting the family from tha impertinent intrusion of peddlers, I havo not had the satisfaction to learn. None know better than these fel« lows themselves that not one person in a thousand willingly inspects the dirty no. tions and crumpled goods of a peddler, and it is strange that men exist who will engage in the business. The offense is a nuisance, and the offender should be mad* amenable to the law and it would be a good thing if all persons convicted of common peddling were heavily fined and imprisoned.
£k&&$
ANOTHER OFFENSE.
Akin to the peddled nuisance is'ihe impertinence of some colporteurs—zealous people who imagine tbey aro especially called to Ecattcr tracts and distribute religion. A. case ia ^^point. oc^urrad not long since in a city not far from-'the Capital. Tho lady oJL a respectable family was busily engaged preparing her children for school, when a.kng-«visaged, evidently dyspeptic individual suddenly walked into the room and in tQnes of sorrowful accent requested to kneel with herself ani the children and pray. Recovering from her surprise tbe lady informed the apparition that her.little ones were in a hurry to get off to school, and that he could not bd. accommodated. Not in the least ^teeomfltted the ^ra||r|d individual remarked that he would wait until the children wore gone and then join with her in addressing thc Throne ol Grace. This proposition also received*n emphatic negative, and the Amlnadab Sleek, with solemn countenance and doleful glances, slowly took his departure.
The ofienie, iu this instance, led to an irrevereat sequel, as tbe individual was pointed out to the husband on the street, und that person, beiug somewhat vexed, asked tho colporteur why he had gone to his hoube and annoyed his family, and got fur reply that the Lord had t»ken hitn
there. f-i si'HiJ "Well, sir," responded the husband, "il tbe Lord takes you into my bouse again' you will come to tho conclusion that the devil showed you out!"
The distribution of tracts is doubtless a good thing but if it is to be accompanied by devotional exercises led'by provoking zealots, with such disregard of proprf ety, the good eAttso^U ^Mm^twfelly benefitted. ^..T
MISCELLANEOUS.
The present season at tho Metropolitan Theatro comes to a close on tho 29th of this month. This will be followed by a spring season, under a different manage1 ment, when Indianapolis will bave the pleasuro of seeing Edwin F-orrest, John E. Owens, Lucille Western and other fixed stars of the theatrical firmament.
Tho old State Fair grounds, Camp Sul livan, has been, or will be, rented to the Club of Base Bailors The ground will be fenced, provided with seats, and other, wise fixed up so as to look nice and be attractive. O. B,
The Tide Turning.
We suspect lhat tb.fi tide, which reached its lowest ebb when the Democrats carriod New York in November, has already turnol. A better feeling prevails among Republictns. CougresB moves with courage and spirit, and tho people already seem to answer with renewed confidence. Tho tone of tho press is decidedly im proved. We hear iufinitoly less of paltry local issues, less of personal wrangles, less of grumblings and complaints. The old veterans of the army, it they straggled and lounged on the majch, used to fall into lino promptly witty th^ first sound of hostile guns. The Republicans are falling into line, for already the ekirmiah fire
fegin.token
ives of the general battle soon to They are falling into line, and casting off superfluous burdens, and those mistake most terribly who think the closing line of veterans will easily be bro ken.
The first election of tho year was to fill a vacancy in the Eighth Congressional district of Ohio. The district was close at tbe last State election it had given only two hundred Republican majority. A very slight change would givo it to the Democrats, and they made extraordinary exertions to secure the prize. It was an election for Congress, and all tbe objec tions of faint-hearted Republicans to the policy of Cougress, and especially to mea sures now pending, wore freely used throughout the district to win over the few additional votes needed to make sure the Democratic triumph. Nevertheless, Beatty, the Radical candidate, was elect ed by nearly one thousand majority—a gain of about eight hundred votes.
This is a trifle in itself, except as it indicates a change of feeling. When Ohio voted in October, we felt confident that her people would soon be ashamed of themselves, and redeem their record by overwhelming Republican majorities. If this Congressional election indicates that the change h03 already begun, that Ohio Republicans already realize that it was folly to flinch in the presence of the enemy, and worse than folly to givo rebels victory in order to Bettle the quarrel between Mr. Wade and his opponents, then the marked gain may be accepted as proof that Ohio will be found ia Novem ber next leading the solid phalanx of Northwestern States that will send eust ward unbroken majorities for the Republican candidate,
New Hampshire will 600n vote. The contest already begins to be warm, and the Democrats, aware that the first state election of the Presidential year has a pe culiar effect, are concentrating all their efforts to Bocure a victory. It has been a close and doubtful State during tbo whole struggle, and has been 6aved, year after year, only by splendid fighting. If the Democrats carry it, tbey will have but little prooi of real change iu their favor, while a Republican victory will Bhow that even the close States of 1860 and 1864 are preparing to vote right in 1064.—Missouri Democrat.

No. 25 Maiden Lane, I New York, Dec. 14,1867.)
In my Card of Nov. 1,1367,1 stated that, "for the purpoae ofmonftally tnwplylng the wants of the public, and in order to prevent nnscrnpafoua dealers ftom palming oAT Inferior and worthless goods as the ITIorton Gold Pens, I shall hereafter sell no goods at wholesale except only to duly appointed and authorized Agents." etc. To this plan I have since strictly adhered.
In accepting- Agents, great care has been exercised to appoint those who, by long-continued fair dealing, have acquired a reputation for honesty, responsibility, and probity—men in whose word the public have learned to place confidence. These Agents have agreed to keep a full assortment of my pens, and to sell them at my published prices. Thus the public are supplied by thom with just suoh pens as they want, either as to writing or price, and get a full equivalent for the money paid.
If agent is appointed to travel from place to plaoe, or canvass the country, so that all who want a Morton Gold Fen must get it from the Local Agent or from headquarters.
None need apply for the Agency except in conformity to the above, the liberal discount "To Olubs" being sufficient inducement to all others.

Ill Main Street-
January l^h,
Having commenced our second year at the well known stand, "the Boston Store." we consider it botb a duty and a pleasure to thank our customers for their past liberal patronage. It shall contiuue to be our aim to keep always on hand a choice assortment of goods suited to the want# of the community
We bave just completed an inventory of our stock and marked our goods at heir present value Jwithout regavd to cost, and, aa it is generally conceded that the prices of DRY GOODS have finally touched bottom, now is certainly a safe time to buy.
In every department we are offering great inducements with a view to the closing out of our entire stock of Winter Goods, preparatory to the opening of Spring trade.
Soliciting the favor of an inspection of our Goods and prices we remain, Respectfully,
