DAILY EXPRESS
TEBBE HAUTE, IND.
Friday .Morning, an uarj 31st, 1868
THEBE would be as much propriety in an incendiary complaining of the expense of subduing a conflagration which hie torch had kindled as there is in the Democratic party howling about the "enormous expenditure" of public money incurred by the Union party in suppressing the Democratic rebellion.
THESE is no instance on record of a convict, on the eve of execution, making
his
soul wretched and disturbing the public
tranquility with fierce denunciations of the authorities for their "outrageous extravagance" in the arrangements for his capture, trial aDd hanging but the bellowing of the Democracy about the "outrageous extravagance" of the Repub lican
party in suppressing the Democratic rebellion is little less audacious than such a case would be.
Tbe Eastern Question-
j£j The principal metropolitun journals regard the long continuance of pence in Europe as exceedingly improbable. Tho Tribune speaks of the relations between Prance and Russia as anything but friendly. The Paris papers which are in the service of Louis Napoleon denounce Russia as the only power now disturbing the peace of Europe, whilo the organs tf the Russian Government denounce the influence of France as the only obstacle to the reconstruction of the Turkish Empire. The Government of Austria is in full accord with that of France. It has formally renounced nil opposition to the consummation of the unity of Germany and ot Italy—ol courso, its own German and Italian provinces excepted—and, on the other hand, declares that any attempt to unite the Slavi of the Turkish Empire into a Slavic Empire would be treated as a casus belli. All this indicates that for the present the Eastern question again occupies the first place in European politics.
"Anti-Masonry" Again.
An exchange discovers symptoms of the revival of the Anti-Masonic party in the fact thot the Kov. Mr. BLANCHARD, of Galesburg, Illinois, and Rev. Mr. FINNET, of Oberlin, Ohio, have been opening the batteries of the church upon the time* honored society of operative Masons.
The Roman Catholic Church, as it is well-known, has exprossed its decided disapprobation of secret societies, as ineons sistent with the entire confidence that should exist between the clergy and their penitents but no other communion has made the right of church membership tu depend upon a 1'reedom from other ties. Mr. BLANCHARD prevailed upon a Methodist conference to pass a resolution con* detnning secret societies, wliiio FINNEY succeeded in excluding Masons from tho Congregational churches of Oberlin, on the ground that such individuals cannot, in the nature of the case, give the requisite evidence of personal piety. What tr. FINNEY means by this assertion is hard to decipher. The questions put to an applicant for church^meinbership are wellknown and if a clergyman can enter into innocent matters of a privato nature, he might as well require a revolation of the interviews between counsel -and client.
Laird on tlio Stump.
The Democracy of tho First District, accuitomed to easy victories, prior to the exchange of Dubois and Martin for Perry, are unable to realize that their days ot domination aro numbered hence we ilnd a variety of candidates struggling for succession to the pen-knives, perfumery, pocket-handkerchiefs, and other miscellaneous perquisites, as well as pay and mileage now drawn by thnt amiable and handsomo gentleman familiarly known as "sweet William of Vincennes."
Among the names prominently mentioned in this connection aro those of ColCHARLES DKNBY, Judge BAKER, Judge PABBOTT and Judge "DAYY" LAIRD.— The three first named are gentlemen of respectable attainments, either of whom would probably be a decided improvement on the present incurabont. But "DAYY" has been a candidate time out of mind. He yielded the race to NIBLACK in 1866 with great reluctance and doesn't intend to b« either bluffed or crowded off the track this year. As an orator "DAYYJ flatters himself ho is a stupendous successHe orated at Evansville last Saturday before an admiring crowd, and paraded his historic lore with intense self-satisfac-tion. He was fresh from the perusal of somebody's history of the French Revolution, and expatiatod at great length upon the part borne by "ROBERT SPIERK" in that bloody drama 1 There was a world of pathos in his voice as he traced the history of tho trials and afflictions through which the great Democratic party had passed, and the more gallant portion of his audience were well nigh affected to tears when "DAVY" expressed his amazement that "she" had been able to withstand so much. But his eloquent predic. tions and glowing protraiture of "her" future achievements seamed amply to compensate for the years of contumely and degradation which "she" had endured.
Commou Sense from Kentucky. The Paducah Herald, heretofore one of the most blatant of all the rebel sheets in the Union, has at last decided that "kicking against tho pricks" is not a paying business. On the proposition to return JOHN TOVNG BROWN to Congress it says,: "We have no objection to tho reflection of Mr. Brown, under the circum, stances, we must, confer,

This present Congress will not admit, him while there are various sound and g00{ men in the District, any one of whom can gain the seat, thus saving a Demo cratic vote in Congress at a very important crisis, and rescuing the District and State from a whirl of angry passion which promises no good to our party in the November election, when canvassed north of the Ohio river."

OIK FOREIGN TRAVELLERS. The Hartford Press, in its first indignation over the arrest of G. Francis Train, suggested a very practical and entirely original view of the case: "If our fool's who go abroad, are not to be protected, vhere will be a sad falling off in foreign travel. In our opinion a bare suspicion of danger will lend an exhilaration to the enjoyment of foreign lands. Mr. Smith, wife, and the little Smiths, for instance, would experience quite a novel and delightful sensation, if the former could impress his family and his friends with a sense of his personal danger. Mrs. Smith would cling to his arms with such a delicious womanly tremor, and the little Smiths would grasp his coat skirts with such an extensive idea of their papa's importance, whonover an English policeman appeared. So far from there being a falling off in foreign travel, there would be quite the reverse. If the arrest of Mr. Train could be regarded as a reliable precedent, we should have a sudden exodus of Americans to Europe each gentleman would make a Fenian speech on the gangway just as tbe steamer pushed off, and when it arrived at Queenstown he would anxiously scan the crowd upon the wharf to discover the officer and his warrant.— Whether the World would continue to pay the expenses of such arrests, we cannot say. We do not advise any one to undertake the thing without a definite understftnding

Poor Browo.
The unterriiled and unwashed Democracy of Breckinridge county, in the Second Congressional District of Kentucky, in convention conglomerated, -have resolved, with the usual amount of surplusage and exaggeration, that they foal themselves "aggrieved in consequence of tho flagrant outrage perpetrated against" rebel sympathizers and treason mongers by "the present unscrupulous Congress of the United States," in "willfully, wan« tonly, and with the intention ©f crippling the influence,"in any, way"of Kentucky,in the Congress of the nation, persistently refusing to admit" their "gallant repre« sentative, the Hon. John Young Brown-' one of tbeir model spouters of veiled treason, and strongest opponents of national progress and unification. After declaring the "duty of the Democracy in State Convention assembled to express their indigs nation at the infamous treatment," etc., etc., they proceed further to announce that "it will be the duty, as it will the pleasure, of his constituents to again return him to Congress."
Poor Brown 1 It his followers insist on using him as a foot-ball, he of course will offer ho objection. Some vessels are made to honor, some to dishonor.—Chicago Journal.
AN
eminently wise and timely bill is now before the House of Representatives, providing that tbe appointment of all agents of any department of tho gov* ernment, whose salary shall exceed five hundred dollars, must be confirmed by the Senate. As matters now stand, the Treasury Departmeut can and doe.-! appoint Bpecial agents, with vast and unlimited authority, who have more real power than regular officials. For example, not long since, one of these special agents retired from Chicago, to which he came a few months before, a poor ma worth his tens of thousands, and soon after another "special" was in tho field whose author!ty was so great that, according to one of his /riends, a purse of 100,000 would have been made up for him if he had only winked at the doings of the "ring. We are prepared to believe it. He was clothed with the power to check or tolerate the frauds being perpetrated in this city and vicinity. He may have withstood, the temptation, but however that may be, ii is certain that if the Senate is to exer cise authority in the filling of offices, should in filling those most vital to the revenue of tho government. The bill is not a party measure, but one which all honest and sensible men will approve. Let it be passed, and, if necessary, "the veto of the President to the contrary notwithstanding."— Chicago Journal.
Mineral Resources of Indiana.
In an essay prepared for the State Board of Agriculture, and published in the reports just issued, Prof. Brown says, "making a liberal allowance for faults and defects in the coal beds, it is safe to ass sume that Indiana has a coal deposit equal to ten feet in thickness, covering an area of eight thousand square miles." Reducing this to tons or bushels or resolving it into its market value in dollars and cents, would in either case give a sum of the magnitude of which the mind could have no comprehension. If we were to con* sume a million of tons a year the supply would last seven thousand years. What an immense magazine of power. What reservoir of comfort in the long dreary winters of the future —[iV. W. Farmer.

nently suggests that a grand, National Copporhead Convention should be called immediately, to determine the rata at which the State of Ohio may tax the Na« tional Bank stock owned by George Pendleton. That apostle of greenbacks, and National Bank Director, claims that the statute of Ohio is "unconstitutional," because it taxes his bank stock more than he is willing to pay. Nothing is constitutional in the estimation of a Democratic aspirant for office, except a resolution em anating from a caucus of his party.Pray let us have a decision on the tax law of Ohio from a Democratic Convex tion. and if it decidee with Mr. Pendlo ton, it is oppressive upon him and his bother bank directors, perhaps the Convention may be able to indicate the rate of tax-upon bank stock that the Legisla ture of Ohio may constitutionally levy.
