Albany was laid out in 1814, by
Abnor and Nathaniel Scribner, but as early aa 1811 there were seven famines reading within what are the present limit of New Albany. Early in the year 18H a mill was built on Falling Run Creek almost directly in front of the present stwi of the Slate Flour mill near tbe depot This mill was of logs, and was carriec away by a freshet in the spring of 1812 The miller had a cabin, and near bin lived, in another cabin, a mflB and bin family who were in his employ. Tbi two ferrymen had each a house near thi river there was another house on the site now occupied by Reamer's warehouse, and still another opposite. Seven familiei occupied these houses in 1810-11. We have their names but do not deem their publication necessary.
Jeffersonville is the site of old Fort Steuben. When the Stale .prison was lo* cated there in 1822, it was then supposed thattho labor of the convicts could be beneficially employed in constructing canal around the falls of the Ohio on tbe Indiana side, and that object had much influence in determining the selection
The first church erected by the Meth odists in the State of Indiana, was a rude log meeting house, built in the ear 1804, on Gaaaway's farm, in Clark county.— Tbe location was three or four niiles from Jefiferaonville.
The capital of Indiana was removed fromCorydon to Indianapolis cn the 1st of January, 1825. The Legislature hekl its sessions in the Court-house (yet stand' ing and in use,) until 1824, when the pres. eat State House was completed, at a cost of $60,000.
Jefferson oountv was established 14 1810, and the present city of Madison wal laid out the same ye&r. The counties oj Franklin and Way ne were also organized in 1810.
The East Fork of While River wae, «. the Territorial days of Indiana, called Embarras Fork.
In December, 1810, au act was passed by tha Territorial Legislature to incorporate the "Ohio Steamboat Navigation Compa ny," by which Daniel D. Tompkins, Rob ert R. Livingstone, DeWit Clinton, Rob erl Fulton and Nicholas J. Roosevat, were made a body corporate lor the pur* poee of navigating the Western waters under Fulton and Livingstone's patent. "In the bed of White River, in the northwest corner of Jackson oounty, is solitary bouldor of granite weighing sev oral hundred tons. No other rock of any kind is found in the vicinity- In the same neighborhood is a large mound about two hundred yards in cjrcumfer ence at the base. On this spot, in 1812, marauding party of Indians hold a courr* cil to determine whether they Hhould re treat or light a party of thirty men, ua der Captain (afterwards General Tipton then in close pursuit on their trail. Re aistance being determined upon, they stationed themselves very advantageously on an island, since known by the name of Tipton's Island, which was connected to the shore by a drift, and in one place only by a single log. Over tbis Tipton ruahed with his men, and he being so fortunate as to kill the principal Indian, the rest of the Indians fled, with the loss cff most of their men, and without damage to the whites." "In the northwest corner of Decatut county is a mound about eighty feet circumference, originally covered with trees, like the other forests around. An excavation was made into it a few years ago, First, there was a mixture of earth, Band and gravel for one foot then dark earth charcoal, lime and burnt pebbles were ce men tod together so as to be penetrated with difficulty then a bed of loose sand and gravel, mixed with charcoal then were found the bones of a human being, in a reclining position, with a flat stone over the breast and another on the skull Most of the bones were nearly decom posed, but some of them, and a part of the teeth, were quite sound. From the of such of the bones of tho skele ton as remain, it must have once been of monstrous sice. A short distance from this mound is a much smaller one, which contained a great number of skeletons.''
Classical Education.
The friends of thorough, practical edu cation everywhere have been much inter estod of late in the speech of Mr. Lowe, an Oxford member of Parliament, before the Edinburgh Philosophical Society. The speaker is himself a man of fine cul ture and thorough scholarship, and hence his powerfu) attack of the old system of education and the anciont course of study imposed upon all students alike, without referencs to their taates, interest or business, creatcd in England undisguised astonishment. Reforms movo slowly in England, and in our own country there are no prejudices
BO
difficult to remove as
those that come through education.— Thousands of boys have wasted years on Greek, to whom a little knowledge of practical mathematics, physiology, and natural science would have been a great blessing. Yet our colleges go on teaching Latin and Greek to the exclusion of other studies, and no student is considifr* ed fit for life who has not spMt a portion of it in digging out Greek roots. S«id Mr. Lowe: "I hold th»t it is moro important for a man to know wore his liver is seated, and what it its functions are, than tu know that it

la Greek," and that the knowledge of words is vastly kss important than tho knowledge of things. The false should yield to the true, ond realities take the place of forms, facts simple enough in themselves, but which have never yetbeen introduced in tbe English system of education. We livo in a universe of things, and to the study of these things we should devote our earnest attention
The history of England was more important than the mythology of Greece, out he was afraid that children learned more of Pagan than of Christian religion at school. Latin was a very good accomplishment, but be agreed with Heine, who said: "How fortunnte the Romans were that they had not to learn Latin grammar, because if they had done so, they never would have found time to conquer the world." Eschylus himself, he thinks, if he were to come to life, would be easily plucked on bis own verses by au Oxford examiner, and, as for Homer, ho certainly never heard of a nominative case. The Sngliah boy is expected to know how maay anchors there were at Athens, but he be ignorant of how many Lords of the Treasury there are, and he knew of an eminent graduate of Oxford who took a first clus honor, and one of the things by which he got it was an English essay in which thera wer« forty-six words misspelled. In short, without becoming" classy1 scholars for the Germans laugh at the English, they fail to become anything

and the ordering out of Southern from their hunting grounds between the Arkansas and Platte, were notable violaon in it re burning of tbe Cheyenne vdlago by Gen. Hancock, that he acted on official made to him by Major Douglass, which reports were subsequently^ proved to be wholly false. They also found that set tiers on the rentier had been guilty of a long continued series of depredations upon the Indian Reservations, and that this was particular one of the inciting causes
Thus more or less than thirteen slits in tbe cylinderspoll the whole effect. Again, pith thirteen printed figures on the Inside slips the greatest amount of animation is produced with twelve figures, the figures remain stationary, and only their bund-? or legs move, or the balls and tbe things they play with are turned about. But, strange to say, with a double slip—that is to say, with fourteen figures on the top and twelve below, or vice versa—the figures all move in contrary directions.— What is to account for this Tho most curious effect of all, however, is produced by takiog half of one slip and half of another and jo fixing them in the cylinder, when utterly inexplicable combinations are produced. A» we have said, 'The Wheel of Life' is capable of almost indefinite extension In its principle—especially to the illustration of moving photographs, growing flowers and machinery in motion. Altogether, it is one of the most curious optical toys that have ever been brought out, and especially to young aod old."
Blvssed are Paying Subscribers. Blessed is the man who doth subscribe for his county paper and pays therefor. His feet shall not stand on slippery places he aha!! not be forsaken by his enemies nor his children be seen bogging.
Blessed is he that walketh to the office of the printer, yea, even aseendeth to the sanotum, and payeth a years' subscription in advance. Selah
He shall learn wisdom day by day, and bo esalted above his fellows. He shall talk knowingly upon all subjects, and his neighbors shall be astonished at the muchness of his learning,
He shall not contract bsd debts or lose good bargains. He shall not pay an additional per cent, on his taxes, for his eyes shall behold the notice of the collector, and he will Uke warning thereby.
Yerily, ha shall bring his produce to th: market when the prices are exceediogly good, and withhold when the prices depcendoth.
He shall not lay hold of red hot pokera, for his knowledge of metallurgy will teach him that hot iron burns.
His children shall not vex him, nor his wife wear the breeches. He shall five to a good old age, and when his hour at hand, his soul shall not be troubled as to its future state.
But it were better for him that doth refuse to subscribe for his county paper that he be bound hand and foot and cast upon a feather bed.
If perchance he has a moment a peace, it is only that he may have a little rest ere the memory of an evil life lacerate* his mind as the goad pricks the hide of the strong ox, so that his punishmeut may bo long drawn out.
His children shall grow up in wickedness, they shall put their hands to their noses, and vex" him to wrath, and bis wife shall kick him out of bed.—-Selah

Indians who ame near the posts, and thank the military authorities for preventing Green Clay Smith, Governor of Montana, ffom waging unprovoked war, with bis militia, upon the Crow Indiana, with whom we have always been at peace. They cen sure Congress for its t#rdy and inefficient manner of dealing with tho Indian question, and various missionary societies ot tho country for overlooking the home fields and turning their attention to tne ends of the earth.
They recommend that the Indian Uu reau be made a separate department leav ing Congress to determine whether its head shall not be a member of the Cabi net that no more money annuities paid to the Indians, but that whatever is due them be expended in buying agricultural implements, food and clothing that renewed efforts be made to promote civilization among the various tribes that friendly Indians shall be controlled arid dealt with by the civil arm of the Government through the new department that the power to declare war with any tribe shall be vested solely in the Presidentthat only Indians assuming a war-dike at titude or refusing to keep peace, shall by the President be put under charge of the military tbat Congress designate a time, not later than February, 18C9. when al Indian Agencies and Superintendence shall be considered vacant only the best men of the present incumbents to be re appointed, and that the Governers of Ter ritories who are generally politicians should not be made Superintendents, and that our Indian intercourse laws be com piled and published for general circulation. They aWo recommend the setting apart of two reservations exclusively for

Indian occupation that for the Southern Indian Territory, and that for tbe Northern Indians, being that portion of Dakota Territory bounded on the north by the fortv-flfth parallel, oast by tl*e Mis^uri river, south by Nebraska, and west by the one hundred and fourth meridian. They recommend, ttnally, that the Commission be continued and sent out in the spring to meet the Northern Indians, wb° have expressed a willingness* to hold a council at that time.
"The Wheel of life."
The London Times gives the following description of a new and singular toy call cd "Tbe Wheel of Life:"
Under this not inappropriate title the London Stereoscopic Company have bro't out one of tbe most curious optical toys that ever amused a juvonile Christmas party. The principle of the invention, which comes from America, is not new, though the manner in which it is applied in this instance certainly is, and, what is more, the principle is found to be capable of almost indefinite extension. The apparatus Bimply consists of a small metal cylinder which revolves horizontally on a centre pivot. In the sides of this cylinder thirteen narrpw slits are made, and in the centre is placed a slip of paper printed with men or animals, birds or fishes.— When the cylinder is revolved the figures assume the most extraordinary semblance of vitality—fighting, dancing, leaping and going through the most wonderful antics tbat ever a nightmare .invented to puzxle the brain. It is quite easy to account for the peculiar optical effects which produce these illusions, but there are some things connected with "The Wheel of Life" which it will puzzle tbe ablest to account for.

The inventor claimed that by tbe use ot his apparatus, he could heat the public buildings in Washington, at one-fourth the present expense of doing the same, and this claim appeared to bo reasonable to all who viewed its operation. The invention consists of a fan, kept in motion by a sim plo arrangement of cog-wheels, resemoling clock-work, with a weight for a motivrpower, requiring to be wound uponce or twice a day. The fan forces a current of air through a beater and pipes leading to the various apartments required to be warmed, arranged in the ordinary furnace. The same apparatus, without the heat, can be used in warm weather to
