This country has reason to be proud of this spleudid speoimon of American operatlvo genius and enterprise. That It will work a revolution In the watch manufacturing of the world no one can doubt who examines the operations of the Waltham establishment, for it turns out watch movements at JiiBt about one-half the cost of imported movements—beside the uniform, reliability or the machine-made watches must give ihom a gieat advantage over all others wherever known. A poor time piece of the machine-make will be ai rare in tho future as a good one of hand make has been heretofore, for machinery is arbitrary In its performance, and can make a perfect article Just as easy as one that Is worthless. It will be a cause of congratulation if this highly useful Jfiheriaaft Enterprise shall have the effort or driving out or market the thousands of truly foreign articles miscalled time keepers, by rumlshlng so •xoellent and economical a substitute." All the World's Wive s-
In Ceylon the marriage proposal brought abeut by the man sending to hor whom he wishes to become his wife, to purchase her clothes. These she sells for a stipulated sum, generally asking as much as she thinks requisite lor them to begin the world with. In the evening ho calls on her with the wardrobe, at her father's house, and they pass the night in each other's company. Next morning, if mutually satisfied, they appoint a day of marriage. They are permitted to separate whenever they please, and so fre» quently avail themselves of this privilege, but they sometimes change a dozen times before their inclinations are wholly suited.
In Chinese Tartary a kind of male polygamy is practiced, and a plurality ofjhusbands is highly respected. In Thibet it is customary for the brothers of a family to have a wife in common, and they generally live in harmony with her. Among the Calmucks the ceremony of marriage is performed on horseback. The girl is first mounted and permitted to ride off at full speed, when a lovar takes a horse and gallops after her. If he overtakes the fugitive she becomes his wife, and the marriage is consummated on the spot. It is said that no instance is known of a Galmuck girl ever being overtaken unless sbe is really fonnd of her pursuer.
Russia appears to bo tho most preposterous country in Europe in its treatment of woman. The nuptial ceremonies, all and singular, are based upon idea of degradation of tho female. When tho parents have agreed upon the match, the bride is examined by a number o£,women to see if ehe has any bodily defect. On her wedding day she is crowned with a garland of wormwood, to denote the bit* terness.of the marriage state. 3he is extorted to be obedient to her husband, and it is a custom in some districts for the newly married wife to present the bridegroom with a whip, in token of submission, and with this he seldom fails to show his authority. In that cold and crudl country, husbands are sometimes know to torture their wives to death, without any punishment for the murder. If a woman proves barren her husbaud generally prevails on her to retire into a convent and leave him at liberty. If he fails in persuasion, he is permitted to whip her into obedience.
Such is tho slavery in which Muscovites are kept by their parents and guardians, that they are not allowed to dispute any union agreed upon by their elders, how* ever odious or incompatible it may bo. This goes so far that officers of the army are not permitted to marry without tho consent of the sovereign, and wives whom they do not want are some times forccd upon them.
Whether it bo tho result of this system of oppression, or of their savage climate, or the unnatural hot air of tbe stove heated apartments, it is certain that a more unlovely race of women than the Russian would be difficult to find. 'They want,' say3 an English traveler, 'the genuine flavor which only nature can give.' That charming firmness and elasticity of flesh, so indispensably requisite to constU lute beauty, and so delicious to the touch, exist not among the Russian females, or in very few of them.
On tho banks of the Senegal, and among many African tribes, the matri, monial prize most sought after is abundance of flesh. To obtain corpulence is regarded as the only real comeliness. A female who can move with the aid of two men is but a moderate beauty, while tho lady who cannot stir, and is only to bo moved on a camel, is estimated a perfect paragon.
Nor is this quoor fancy for obesity in woman confined to the savages of tho torrid zone, since we road in Wraxhall's Travels in Russia, that 'in order to possess any preminent degree of loveliness, a moman must weigh at least two hundred weight.' The Empresses Elizabeth and Catharine 11., both accounted very line women, wer« both of this massive kind.
In Hindostan the women have a peculiar veneration for marriage, as it is a part of the popular creed thai those females who die virgins are excluded from the joys of paradise. In that precocious couutry the women begin to bear children at about the age of twelve, some even at eleven. The proximity of the natives to the burning sun, which ripens men and women as well as plants at tbe earliest period in those tropical latitudes, is assigned as the cause. The distinguishing marks of tho Hindoo wife are tho most profound fidelity, submission and attachment to her husbaud.
The survey of another trans-continental railway route, which shall follow mainly the thirty-fifth parallel of latitude, is nearly completed. Its projectors claim this as the most feasible one across the continent^ and even if theanorthorn and southern roads are constructed, this would still bethe favorite popular thoroughfare, and the easiest and cheapest built.
It is said that influential parties^aro already at Jwork to form

A YOUNG LAST in company with *T right reverend prelate consents, after a long and coy resistance, to be led to the piano. When she sang, It was so badly that, as she finished, no one was found with sufficient heroism to express te the fair executant the collective thanks of the auditors. In this strait his lordship arose and crossing the room, said, with his sweetest smile. "Thank you, Miss— very particularly.
