A good brother in one of tbe rural dis» tricts thought he had a can to preach. Being au indifferent reader, he got a friend to read tbe Scripture. The chapter on one occasion was 22d Genesis, which contains this verse: These eight did Miicah bear to Nohor, Abraham's brother. On this the pracber held forth as fo Hows: "Brethern and sisters, let us considor our blowing. Morning and evening our wives and daughters milk our cows, and thus supply our wants. But in the days of good old Abraham, as you have just heard, it took eight to milk a bear, and they did not get much at that."

In tbe south of Scotland, in 1820, there wer» thirteen drifty days, which killed nine-tenths of all the sheep. On Eskdale Moor, out of 20,000 only 45 were left alive, and the shepherds everywhere built up huge semi-circular wails of the dead creatures, to afford shelter to the living till the gale should end.
