uator there is a large-tract ofunexplojrcountry clothed ^itBt irhmensb forests1, wherein are found nearly all the species of the ape, and that peculiar animal—the gorilla. The first discoverer of this animal was Banno, who visited the country about six conturies before Christ, sailing from Carthage, of which place he was a native. In the manuscript memdtanda left by Hanno he described the animal a* closely resembling the human in form, but with manners decidedly heathenish. Hanno pursued a party of these beasts until he succeeded in killing three of them, and took the skins to Carthage, where the^ were exhibited for centuries as great cun-' oeities. On this history hangs the first accounts we have of this curious and sin.' gular animal. "Tears ago the speaker determined to visit the land of cannibals, his mind having been inflamed by the different accounts he had read concerning them, and their country. Fitting himself out with high hopes he set sail, and in due- time found hinueli upon the western coast of Africa, the only white, man within thousands of miles. He (Usance set about domesticating himself, and it was not long before he was regaled with stoiior concerning the strength of the gorilla and his farocious appearance. He listened quietly, never saying a word, but silently resolved not only to see a gorilla but to possess one, If possible. "Accordingly, a few days after, he set out for the jungle, accompanied by several male ana female natives, the latter being taken along to carry the baggage of the others. Days passed and finally they came upon the track of the gorilla. The women were sent back, a circle around whore the gorillas were supposed to be was formed, and-the hunt beg&ff. 'Shortly after hp heard a moaning sound, partly human and partly devilish, and at the same time three gorillas burst out of the thickest part oC the jungle and ran as if for their lives. The hunter laughed, Biit. his attendants replied that those he had seen were female gorillas, who never showed fight, but if be should see a male gorilla he would find that he 'would need^ all his courage to face it ^TfaoagtHfct^n^ tinued his search for days hefOUtd Jlbd* no other traces of the animal, when he unexpectedly heard certain sounds proceeding from the midst of a thick jungle, and his attendants set up the cry of "The gorilla, the gorilla," and immediately took to flight to save themselves, from its fury. "The hunter was not to be balked now, and placing himself prostrate upon the earth he wormed his way ihrough the undergrowth of vines and pushes and founds himself face to face with a huge gorilla.— The animal on perceiving his visitor set up a horrible yell and began to beat its breast with its hands, all the time clgsely eyeing the Peemini opportunity so long sobght Bid' como, he fired, and had the satisfaction of seeing the monster fall upon the ground dead but before it expired it uttered a moan so plaintive and so closely resembling the noise made by a human being when in pain that the hunter's blood chillcd, aud for a moment he could not get rid of the idea that be had killed one of his own species. When the natives heard the discharge of the gun and the dying groans of the dreaded beast they came slowly back, and finding that they had nothing to fear from the prostrate body they each presented petitions for its brain, which tU^y rubbed upon tb$irbodt ies, superstitiously believing that it would not only make- them strong but would render them irresistible in the eyes of the women of the country. j. "During the sojourn of M. (jtiallm ih Africa ho killed eight male, twenty-two female, and seven young gorillas. The average weight of the males .jwas about four hundred pounds, whtle'nre female, possessing much Iqai bone, does not weigh above two hundred and fifty pounds on an a a 3 "The gorillas alwaya live in th# darkest part of the forest, and in the very center of the densest jungles, subsisting upon roots, birds, and berries. When ojd, the male always Mekiaft obscarp part of ttfei forest and£lives alone. Whenever interrupted the female gorilla runs away, and the male remains behind to protect the retreat of his companion. Whe|i advknc ing to the attack the male gorilla always beats his breasts, which gives forth a sound like a baes drum, and accompanies the beating with a noise which,,^ beginning liko a sharp bark of a hound, increases to aloud and deep howl, and then dies away. One of his attondants, thinking that he was as good a.ahot as the master he was serving, and fully as brave, took itglin and started out, and had been gone but a little while when they heard the discharge of the gun and the angry howl of a male gorilla, and hastily running to the spot the would-be hunter lay upon the ground' in the agonies of death. He had missed his aim, and the gorilla coming upon bim had, with one slap of its imtnenete band, ripped him open, and then, taking the gun in its hands, had bent it with ease, and made its escape. "The gorilla is curiously formed, resembling in, a small way the human race.

The speaker here exhibited the skull of a young gorilla and explained the many differences between its formation and that of the lower order ot the satno 'species and that of th# higher order—man. Upon the wall were map* illuAtratiag different scenes in Africa, and one with a skeleton of a gorilla and a skeleton of a, wan Bute by side drawn upon it, and the close resemblance betweuathem, tbo speaker ariid, suggested to his mind the expression 'Am I not a man and a brother?' The height of a male gorilla is about five feet eight inches, while that of the female will ay^ erage about four feet five' inches"."The male measures about fire feet six inches around the chest. Upon the back of" the malo the hair is very short and has. the appearance of having been shot A,1 biit from its chiu down to iu ankles the hafir is long and jutty black. There are the same number of bones in the gorilla sis in man, excopt that the spinal column [has three more vertabraj in the gorilla than in man, while it has one more *ib than .is found in man's body.

The head of the young gorilla measures twenty-two cubic inches, and na il grows older it increases, until there are from twenty-eight to thirtvfour cubic inches in th6 head of a rulI^wwtT^riTfc WitB an increaso.qf from six to twelve cu|)i§ inches in a few jears tttfe h«ad, ene would naturally suppose ^hat the brain would receive a corresponding increase, but this is not the case.' The additions are all in the bone, while the brain remains of the same sisse as when the go--rilla was first bom. "The speaker explained by means of charts the developement of the head of the gorilla from youth to age, arguing that God in His wisdom, while He had created the gorilla with close resemblance toman, MS,U?HSfftWliig R-dTtSS c£T pacity to think, to act with discrimina? tion, and to become civilized, ^placed an impassably gtilf betweah it ait sfcan,"spying to this resemblance: 'Thus far shall thou go, and no farther.' The gorilla is the wildest beast the ipwker over knew, and its peculiarities are. such that it is almost impossible to other country. T?he speaker bad, alter excessive labor, succeeded in capturing a young gorilla, and he attempted t6 convey it to New York. Jt wa» put on board a ship together with a large quantity of berries afld roots,,such ft^ulilry feeds upon in its native country. "Attire

Decline of the Lecture System—The #ew Kagland Lyceums. correspondent of the Chi •o.Triban»-Wrfte»-: .asatoWi

e-fyceum in Jiew Jsngland is in a demoraliJied'dotfdition. Lyceums cannot arrange paying courses, owing to the fact that tne best lecturers get so much more in youtrg Western cities than our Eastern communities can aSord to T»y. A town of flVte thousand people, with you, has sii enterprising, warm-blooded young men, who want to take out two or three young ladies, apiece onee a week to a lecture, wherei a siktilar town with us has six nof, very young women who must stay at home in pinched and chilled maidenhood becauso tire seventh woman alone can get a beau. With you in the West, also, people read at home less than With ns in the. East a good lecture is rnore serviceable in the West than in the East. The consequence need not be pointed out. The West pays the best lecturers much better than we can, •Hence our lyceums languish. "There is undoubtedly a two«fotdaeriops fault in many of tbe .-lectures now offered to the public. They are not of pro-. fdund interest, and they are not well done. Even able lecturers catch up some theme of exciting interest to politicians and the newspapers, and make a harangue when they ought to make-a lecture, not merely handling a topic of ephemeral interest^ bit handling it no better than it has been handled for every hearer in his newspaper. In the half tfdUefc lectures inflicted on ub this winter upon reconstruction,' there has not been the gleam of an idea not fuUy familiar to all fif-us. Even the spjeech of Wendell, .Phillfps on 'The Dawdling Cpngresfj' seemed commonplace compared to bis masterly recital-of tilje story of O'Connally into which was skilfully woven an unanswerable vindication of tBfe rtiSsion of agitatdMj' afhWjg whom Mr. Phillips is first in this conn* not in tbe world.
