Bossian Discipline.
A recent French writer gives the fol lowing anecdote, which illustrates the discipline of the Hussion service, though the reader must make a little allowance for the long bow which Frenchman are apt to draw when speaking of Russia. A Russian General, while reviewing the troops, noticed a soldier who was decorated with a military medol. "Where did you' obtain that "At Inkerman, General." "Very good, you aro a brave man/' said the General banding him a dollar, added. "There is something for you to drink my healtbwith"
The soldier extended bis hand to receive the gift, when the General exclaimed: "Bight days in the guard house for this man, who Jias failed to preserve his position." ^en'pacesdown the line the same scene but the soldier when offered tbe money stood like a statue. He was ordered to take it by the General, bnt he was stolid. "Sight days in the guard»house for this man, cause, disobedience of order received from bis superior officer."

A Relic, [j-a -JJJStAi«
Through the politeness of Miss Corrie A. Badon, we have been favored with the perusal of a copy of the "Newport Mercury, or the Weekly Advertiser." printed "Tuesday Dec. 19, 1758,—jnst one hundred and nine years old The Mercury was printed by 'James Franklin, halfbrother of the immortal Benjamin Frank-' lin, who perhaps composed a portion of the matter in tbe copy before us. The paper contains eight columns, and its en tire site is 19 by 14 inches! The. paper, although clearly printed,, -is in .strange contrast with the elegant and tasteful appearance of the Spectator, aDd it seems hardly possible that the next hundred years will show as great improvement in the art of printing. Who can tell? By tbe Mercury we are informed that on-

A Nejr Sensation—The Body of Mail- .. millan. The New Tork correspondent of the Waterford (^Ireland) Mail, underda^e^oL December 3 writes:
Admiral T^ethoff, of the Austrian navy, is now enroute for home, with what he believes to be the body of the unfortunate Maximilian. My connection With" the Mexican agents in this country forbids my entering Into-minutiae, but I can asserted that the remains which will ba honored by Austria are not tho30 of th^ill-lat-ed sciott of the House of Hapsburg, hut of Hamaro, a noted bandit and guerrilla, who, in life, was not unlike poo ^Maximilian. The fatter.ia pining in ah obscure dungeon in Quefetaro, fed with felon's food, and awaiting the arrival of welcome death.-
The night iiefore his supposed execution Juarez, uncertain of his own success in seeking the Presidency,- -and perhaps unwilling to fmbrue his hands In royal blood, had the noble captive conveyed by stealth toa 8ecret den, and substituted in his stead the ruffin Hamoro. hoping, had be not succeeded in his political aspiration, to have made a fortune by deliver log him to Austria.
Wading the Mississippi Keokuk, Iowa, paper, tells of a successful attempt to wade tbe Mississippi. Two well known citizens, having provided themselves- with rubber boots, strode into the river at the chain rapids, just above the packet depot, and actually succeeded in accomplishing the hazardous feat. Therefore, let it go forth to the world that in the month of December, 1367, the great river of the nation was successfnlly waded at Keokuk—an accident that has never before occurred, and it may be long years ere another eager itemizer will cluteb his pen to record a similar occurrence. Tbe Mississippi, is shorn of its might proportions and it moves sluggishly along, as if feeling the insignifl. oance to wbiohithas fallen. The low watar mark of other years will be forgot, ten—the low water mark of 1867, never. iveWlif
Care for Cold Fest
We are assured by one who has given the experiment a fair trial, that cold feet, and especially those superlatively frigid feet that are kept chilled by perspiration may be relieved by a simple experiment. This is to wear cotton socks next the skin and woolen stockings outside of them. In the instance of our informant, the result was successful in keeping bis feet warm and dry. The singular consequence also ensued that at nignt he would find the cotton socks (next his skin) quite dry, while the outside woolen stockings would be perfectly damp.
An Illinois farmer set a trap in his oorncrib and found a man's hand it next morning.
Of the fifty-eight distilleries represented by delegates in the National Whisky Convention that assembled in Washington, thirty-two have been detected gin frauds upon the revenue.
