Forests and Dronths
Prof. R. C. Kidzie, In a lato agricultural lecture, speaks of the necessity of pre* serving the forests, and of planting thorn anew where they have been generally de*. stroyed. We quote:
Egypt, from the earliost periods of history, has been Bpolcon of as a rainless region but since Mahomet Ali has made his imfnonse plantations of trees, showers have become froquent. The controlling influence of forestB over rain falls is also shown by the fact that countries once supplied with forests and having abundant rains and immunity from frost, their forests havii been destroyed, have been scourged by drouth and frost till the forests were restored, when they once more became fruitful or, if the inhabitants would not restoro their protecting forests, the stern hand of famine: threatened to wipe out a race that would hot reverence the order of nature.
Thus tho Cape de Verde Islands, so named from their greenness, have been stripped of their forests by thoir improvident inhabitants, sinco which time they suffer terribly from periodical droughts, some times no rain falling for three years at a time, and 30,000 inhabitants or onethird of the population, have perished.—
Hard on Tlie "Missionaries." The Iowa State Register has tho following reference to a class of itinerants which Issue from Chicago: "Personally we love Chicago "Drummers.1 and they mor'n, love us. They are naturally so smart, so artistically streaked and striped, and so professionally impudent that 'to see them is to love them volcanically. What Harper's Bazaar and Leslie's fashionable plates are to the picture world, these gentlemen of cologne and tailor-make are to the animal kingdom. The Mt. Pleasant Journal, a short time ago, told of about eighteen or twenty of them filing into a church in that city, at a late hour, in order to create a sensation and astonish the natives and they succeeded admirably, for one lady was heard to wonder why so many inmates were allowed to leave the Insane Asylum without a "guard." Our admiration of them is intense, and we have long been studying how we could benefit thom and the world at the same time. Wo offer this: We would not deprive a Hindoo of his missionary Testamont, nor would we atop the work of Christianizing the Fejee Islanders, but we would most earnestly suggest that all churches establish another fund in addition to those now raised which shall be devoted to the civilizing, mannerizing and regeneration of those merchantile 'insufforables'—1"Chicago drummers.'
All the iron "manuiacturing establish, meats in the vicinity of Wheeling and Pittsburg have determined upon a reduction of the wages of the operatives, or a total tuspeneion of work at tho mills. The aggregate capital employed in Wheeling in the Iron maanufacturies is about $3,000,000, which, a stoppage of the mills, will liejidle, and 5,000 men will be thrown out of employment. If the laborers consent to a reductiou of 32 per cent, on their wages, operations will continue. The saw mills of St. Anthony, Minnesota, have stopped, and hundreds of men are consequently thrown but of employment and unsuccessfully offer to work in the pineries at $10 a month. But tho lumbermen of that vioinity cut one hundred million feet of logs last Winter, overstocked the market and consequently do not need the services of the men this season.
The new Public Buildings at Wasli Ington The Treasury building in Washington, it is said, when completed, will havo cost nearly five million dollars, and will be the finest edifice in the world devoted to similar usee. The greater part of it is built of Maine granite, and it is proposed to rebuild the remainder with tho same ma» terial, as the porous sandstono with which it is constructed is disintegrating rapidly. Plans have also been prepared lor a new War Department building. The new building for the Department of Agricult ure is also rapidly approaching comple* tion, and the musiura hall will bo a prominent attraction for visitors. Speciments of the animals, fruits, products of the soil, and insects of every section of the Republic will be arranged in classes.
A Boston boy, llvo years of age, having stolen a can of milk, his mother took him to task with moral suasion, and wound up h«r discourse by exclaiming. "What in tho world was you going to do with the milk?" "I was going to steal a little dog to drink it!" was tho crushing reply
