was occupied on yesterday with the case of Win gate vs. Black. Judge Maxwell being slightly ill, called Judge Thompson to the bench. -We are sorry to see

our friend Brown of the Sullivan Union work himself into a sweat over a little pun on the two words at the head of thb paragraph which first appeared in. the Gioencastle Banner, and copied in this paper. The pun was so good that we could not resist the fpmptatioa of spreading some of our ink over it, and we as* suro Bro. Brown it was without the least ill feeling. Continue to print a good Union paper, Ike, and take little pleas&utries in good part We will endeavor to reciprocate.

The State prison, at Jeffersonville,

had thirty-seven representatives from Vigo. It is well to state, however, that they are not all residents of this city.— Terrc-Haute Journal.

Of course not. They are residents of Jeffersonville.—Indianapolis Herald. The Journal pleads not guilty. That bull was perpetrated by our cotemporary of the Express.—Journal.

Jefferson villa is merely a temporary abiding place—not of their own choosing. But will not insist, however, on our claims to any of them as citisens.

PRATBE.-—Yesterday

we published a card from a committee of the Ministerial Association and of the Y. M. C. A., containing a programme for Union Prayer Meetings at the rooms of the Y. M. C. A. from 9 to 10 o'clock every morning next week. It indeed seems fitting for Christian people and churches thus to begin the year. It is a pleasant feature of these meeting that they are held throughout the Christian, world, and also, wherever in heathen countries the Missionary .has gone. Then, too, it is no .sectarian affair^. All churches' are desired thus to unite in asking God'a blessing and uearly all do so, either wholly or in part. In our city the union is very general) as we see by the appoiQtment of leaders. The Baptist, bo$h branches of the PreabyteHan, the Methodist and Congregational Churches are a' represented.

The result at these meetings in years past, both in the way of Increasing broth' erty affection among the different denom nations and in awakening an inteeasl outside the churches, has been good. It is to be hoped that all Christians wiB ynit« this year with a hearty good wifl in sustaining this Union meeting. Wfe venture to suggest to business men that they so arrange that themselves and empioyeirmay alternately intend tfie flftetings.

W learn tfeat there will be serrioe every evening next week in some, and probably in nearly all the churches.

fflT The Terre Haute JovrnbX' Clatai» the letter list. We presume then that It will be jReatf.—Sullivan Union.

As the list 6f uncalled for letters hie heretofore been publBhed in "the pap4r having the largest circulation within the delivery-of tBe Tost office," the above item may convey the impression that, as •'the Journal cKnnfQie letter list"" it hhs the largest circulation. Such -is not the

ID

recent fit of economy the Poet

Matter General has ordered that where a newspaper can be found to insert the list gratuitously, that it be given to such paper, no matter what its circulation may be. The price paid was never htlf our regular advertising rates, but it has been valuable to us as showing that the y.-ypyvM ha/i the largest circulation with in the range of delivery. The publication will cease in this paper, because it is no longer evidence of circulation, and there is no valid reason we can see for perform ing such service for the government with out compensation. If at any time heita after the list shall seem of sufficient inter est to be published as a matter of news it will appear in our columns.

The Cincinnati Commercial on this matter says "The Postmaster General has rocontly'teen afflicted with a passion 'for Economy in respect to the publication of the list of uncalled-for letters at the Postoffices. That list has been published for many years in the newspapers showing the largest circulation within-the Post* office delivery, at terms very far below the advertising rates. Indeed, the publi cation of the list has been unremunerative with the exception of the prestige that it gave of largest circulation. The,list has paid, as it has appeared to be the official 6tamp (of the greatest eirctllation. Some montns since the Postmaster General reversed the decisions of the Department for years, and gave copies of the'list to all who would print it for nothing^ at the same time the official publication was made. The Enquirer of this city, for. in•tance, has published the list gratuitously «n the same day that it has appeared id the Commercial under the lew requiring the publication, and providing that it be paid for, in the paper having the largest epenlation. A few days ago orders were isfued that the letter list shall hereafter be printed only in the papers that will not make any oharge, whan thdre are any that are capable of such cheapness. Thai is, the papers of large circulations that can. not afford space for such matter without either money or the prestige of an official indorsement of circulation, for compensation, will not have the list, but it Will be turned over to those of the inferior order. It will be published pretty well for a time, because tho second-rate papers will think themselves in the way of being mistaken for first-rates, until the people find out that the letter-list no longer goes with the papers that circulate largely, but is confined to those whose trouble is to fill up their uncalled-for space. When the appearance of the list no more signifies circulation, there will, in many cities, be much trouble in having it published at all. Fortunately the list has rapidly decreased in importance within a few years. The penny post system has reduced Its consequence materially. Every body with a local habitation and a name nas letters delivtred without waiting for the advertising process.

If the Postmaster General were makinc an henest effort to economise, we should applaud him but, judging from the immense advertisement of mail lettings published in the Enquirer of yesteiday, which Is of no earthly interest te anybody, and not of one cent's value to the Government, his solicitude is chiefly to give succor to Copperheed papers. He would take from papers of the largest circulation the only advertising for which the Government has got value, and a portion of the people's convenience, and give papers of inferior rank and more agreeable politics support in the shape of a dan of advertising utterly worthlees, and the existence of wnich is a corruption and a shame. This is the Poetmaater General's grand retrenchment and initiation of reform.
