St- John the Evangelist'* J)»jr.
The 27th of December is known as St. John, the Evangelist's Day. With many Christian churches it is observed as a holy day, 'and has its appropriate exercises, in their rituals, in commemoration of tho birthday of the Evangelist. Free* masons also observe the day in conform* ity to long established customs. In the legcada of Free-njftsonry. ^St^Jofe, thej Baptist: and St. John the Evangelist hold conq/.cuous places. They were holy and iLi|k men, as all persons are taught and their virtues were so exemplary, honorable and useful to mankind, and so acceptable to tho Deity that they should ever bu hold in remembrance. "Prom the earliest time Christian Free-masona have dedicated their Lodges to these Saints and {modern Free-masons observe the same custom of dedication and celebrate their birthdays. The one was the forerunner—the other the companion of the Savior of men. The one fill a victim to the persecutions of a tyrant, tho other lived to be the companion of his Lord.
According to Masonio tradition jt is held, that owing t» certain eaases there was once need of a Grand Master and that St. John the Evangelist, then Bishop of Ephesus, was prevailed upon, although stricken In years, to aocept the office, Mid that he completed by his learnings what St. John the Baptist had partially accomplished by his zeal. Be this as it nay St. John, the Evangelist, has always been held one of the eminent Christian patrons of Free-masonry, and as such, Free* masons, in common with many Christiuu?, always oommemorate his birthday br appropriate exercises.

There are few people who have a natural hankering after statistics. From tho boy in his compulsory study of the mulr tiplication tables to the reticent bookkeeper of three score and ten, there hardly an individual to be found who voluntarily go into a labyrinth of taba statistics and exhibits. Nevertheless th are some facts and flgures, albeit they nr* sometimes very stubborn, which may bo examined with considerable satistiectloii. The following are taken

Some months since a question arose as to whether holders could surrender their bonds updeir ihe provisions of the acts of 1846 '47, and get in return for one-half of the principal and one»half of the accumulated interest, five and two and one-half per cent, certificates of stock. An ojaio* ion of the Attorney General recently given, however, sets the matter at Te=t,"and accordingly, the old bonds will be taken by the Agent of State from all holders who are to. surrender, .and certiflcates of itook giveh in exchange,' as'providedTiy the acto ioentioned. The greater portion of tho bonds Are held by the United States "and the Baltimore and 'Ohio Railroad Company, and these distinguished parties are not disposed to surrender unless they are paid in full, principal and interest.—
Forty or fifty thousand, however, are held by estaterahd individuals who have signified their willingness to exchange ciiJUBaiAzr or this state cintrax. ctfMinTTIE.
Several papers have noticed and spoken favorablyrtjf the actjon of ajmeeting here recommending the cohtinuance of Jacob T. Wright as Chairman of the Republi can State Central Committee. The recommendation is certainly a good one Mr. "Wright has served through two sue. ccssful campaigns—1864 and 1866—And has displayed much sagacity and ability in the position. It is a place that must be filled by a man who hastconsiderable knowledge of political strategy, and the service must be rendered without hope of payor recognition-^-in the event of, dd' feat. Considerable consternation, it is said, prevails among tho employes of tho-ex-press companies,: caused by the impression that all the companies will unite, and consequently dispense with the services Of a large number. -Latent advices,,however, indicate that the impression and alarm are not well founded, and that no congQljdationr will take place. The street railway company ha concluded to put on smaller carp, for one horse or mule, each, so that more trips cantbe made, and tho expenses reduced. Under the new arrangement there will be^no conductors. Passengers will put their fare in a locked glass box by the side ot the driver, similar to the plan in use on the stages in New York City.
The demolition of the State House, by the storm Saturday night, is a pretty so. rious matter. The State ia not able to build a new State Houee at this time, and it will cost ten or fifteen thousand dollars to repair the old concern. J. C^B.
