Finding that my principles, pelitiefiUj speaking, are not well understood by those who know •*Tne best^ and having heard that my name has been used by both the Radicals and Democrats

belonging to both parties, I see

as

it is now necessary that an explanation should be made, owing to the "pressure.*' It has been now about eighty yeaijB sinoe I "entirely withdrew from politics," and 'I have not attended more than fifty or sixty conventions since, and will not for the remainder of my earthly existence. I do not belong to, or owe obedience to any party. I swear I am not a Radical, and affirm that I am not a Democrat. Whenever parties present principles that I believe to be right, that advances the cause of the country and the interests of the peo« pie, and candidates that are honest and capable, I will vote for them without regard to moral character ot principle and sustain all the parties in mj own humble way without fear or favor from anybody. This is my platform and those are the parties I am going to drill in hereafter.— Certainly I cannot longer be misunderstood, and I don't want to be bothered again on thig subject. will say, however, that I will do business for men of all parties on the lowest terms.

tho office of Lieutenant Governor by some of his Democratic friends. It will be conceded by all who know him that he'is not inferior in point of talent to any man whose name has yet been mentioned in that connection, on that side of the house. It ii very easy to mention a fels low's name as a probable candidate for the nomination, yet at the same time it is quite hard to sucseed in the convention. Considering the ease with which men'# names' are put in print, it is astonishing to us that still more Democrats are not ans nounced as being willing to sacrifice all personal interest for the good of the party by becoming candidates before the 8th of January convention.

incompetent men, or those whom its par-., ty is afraid to trust without help from the "radicals," it is not our fault. In the language of the immortal "J. Bailey's office to organize a financial Congress for tho Democracy, should not accept the invitation under existing circumstances.

is sorely troubled with the

England

feuians, and will probably continue to be so troubled until she relaxes, to some extent at least, her hold upon Ireland. The late attempt made in London to rescue fenian prisoners was attended with a terrible explosion, which though failing in the object, will be heard all round the globe. It shows that England has more than she can manage, and that there is no possible way out of the difficulty e*. fcept by a complete redress of all grievances. She may hang every Fenian she can get hold of, and still be further from peace than ever. Hemp is the best friend the Fonians can have, because it is SOW' ing dragon's teeth. It is true that these revolutionists protest against any settlement short of Irish independenc but a liberal policy on the part of Engl'and, bV which all Irishmen shall be guaranteed equal rights with all Englishmen, and by which the peculiar oppressions of Ireland shall be greatly mitigated, would probably so woaken the Fenians that they would be compelled to remain quiet.— Tim severities of the Government only awaken the sympathies of the masses of mankind throughout the world, and render it more honorable for Fenians to die for their country. It only stimulates that enthusiasm which knows no terror nor yields to any danger. Patriotism can be pushed into fanaticism by the course England has adoptee}, and fanaticism yiolds not to tho love of life. When so many dovoted men are secretly organized, not only in Ireland and America, but in England, and even under the very shadow of the throne, discretion becomes tho better part of valor on the part of the Government, and wisdom poiots to no other course than a speedy redress of all grievances. The demands of so large a number of men, sustained by unselfish devotion, will always extort the respect and sympathy of the vrorld, and that is a Mistaken statemanship which ties itafaith with a hempen cord.

Before the throne was a column of burnished gold, on the top of which was a golden dove, which held in its beak a volume bound in silver. In this book were written the Psalms of David, and the dove having presented the book to the King, he read aloud a portion of it to the children of Israel. It is further related that on thfe' sipproacli bf evil parfeons to the throne, the lions were, wont to set up a terrible roar, and-to lash their tails with violence, the birds, also, and demons and genii to utter horrid .criss so for ,fear of .them no one dared be guilty of false* hood, but all confessed their primes.
