Louisiana—though Mr. Jefferson asked for an amendment to the Constitution— was ratified without the slightest scruple, and yet internal improvements were op posed as a gross outrage upon the rights of the people. Texas was annexed and California acquired,' in order to increase the power of the South, while Tariff bills were villified as downright robberies. The violent agitation'excited by1 measures for Southern aggrandizement, carried with great difficulty by means of specious arguments and threats of Secession, had frequently not subsided before some other law was passed still more hostile to human freedom. Every concession made for the sake of peace was only considered as a preliminary step to further outrageous demonde. Advocating, in words, the equ^jity of ^tbp .States, in action the. Southern leaders would be satisfied with nothflig less than the position of absolute rulers, and every so-called compromise consisted in humbly begging them to abate from their arrogant claims for supr^macy, This^ 6Jirj\ of .dictation is as •vigorous as ever. The President, who has barely escaped impeachment and removal for his derelictions from duty,is abused for giving

practical force to the reconstruction policy of Congress.* He is even blamed for his dwn acts in "dictating constitutions," and fpr not restraining the "demoniac tempers of those who wielded the truncheon off supreme authority." The combined executive and legislative oppression is now to be resisted by the South, but in

i*M»*Mtm^tiEr I J..W-.JI in ..-v Nasal catarrh conaiito in inflammation^ which begins behind and little Above the veil of the palate, aod eztenda upward^ from thence into the noae. The in^im mation is not confined to the: naaal davi ties bat extendi frequently to 'the siij cavities, called antrum* and titauet, which cover a considerable portion of iht face^ and extend to 'th* lower part ofthe fbre-r head.—Persons sometime* feel a* thou} their whole face wera -Involved in

The catarrh often creates a perpetual desire to swallowi and gives the .feeling, as patients express ii "as if. something were sticking in the ,.upper part of the throat." Many times the patient caa only breathe with, tne mouth open. Upon arising in the moraine a great. effort is Required to clear the bead and throat of 'the puriform matter which hps become sbcreted during the night. There. is occasionally a feeling of pressure and tight-, ness across the upper part of the .nose, and the base of the brain sometimes suffers in such a, way as to indticfe .^e^dache, verand confusion. The eyes frequently er by the catarrh dosing the: lachrymal (iueL(% little canal that carries the tear to the nostril,) causing the.eye to matterate.

The dolica|e lining menpibrane of the lids becomes, inflamed' the Arnea of the .eye becomes dry, shriveled and oloudy,' and if the catarrh not subdued tho sight will goon became impared. The inflammation sometimes gets into, tha auaiachian tubes, ihe mouths of which are behind and a

little above thepalate, andeitiendH up the lining membrane to t$e drum pf the ear, causing pain of deafness, and.^asioaally, both.. In addition1 to ttts aLl^Qgue^'of itvils there is oft#n pddea enfbngatioi) of the uvula, aortitis of tha throat, cough, lost of appetite, the sufferer befipmes bilious, sallow, dejected, and low in strength and flesh.

The p'roihotipg causes of [.catarrh are

conie chrtnic and scrofufous tafnH of the system, are among the proniinent .cause's, of this disease.

It often follows scarlet fever, $nk£r rash, measles, putrid sore throat, diptheriey 4ms, '!,

The general practitioner, Jim heretofore pronounced Catarrh incorable, at when oonsulted in relation to1 it? has bWin satis, fled in prescribing some snuff, or squirtiog a little warm water up the nps^ wbieh-of course does'tw good-^the Irst/ iA'sdme instances, twtnally doMg hairmi

Unfortunately, e*tarrhis®W[ geherally lelected by th* patient iii well/ until ft tost sight of in th« disastrous consequent oes to which it gives rise.

Catarrh is beth a genefal as wall as a local disease, and should have botlrar gtnr* oral and local treatment. So succesBful has been tho method 1 adopted for its cure that I do not believe .it will fail in one case out of a hundred, fchefc ptfAperly and faithfally Applied.

I regard catarrh at the great feeder ot pulmonary irritation, and 1 do not belieV# can by any means so effectually guard the longs from disease af by catting off the catarrhal affiBCtio•i.,

The symptoms of catarrh vary in different persdns, no two ever' being afiec|ed exactly .alike, and the disease T» met with in various forms and stages. In the first there is merely a discharge of the straw colored mucous, which accumulates in "the posterior hares, or abovis and behind tbesofl palate, and is hawked or cleaned out from time to time during the .day' In' soirie cases thece are sores formed inyside of tlie nose, and the secretions become dry and hard, requiring almost constant attention to keep the' nose frSe. Then again, a false membrane secreted from the diseased lining, which the patient removes front time to timO. In the last stages the secretions from the head drop down into the throat. Often the mucttous thembratte befcomes ulcerated, and the discharge like pus. When this occurs theire i* often loin of smell, and the discharge has ah 'offensive odor—especially is this the case when the ulceration eats through the membrane and attacks the bone, forming caries of the bone.
