Curiosities of Ice.|
In 1850 Professor Faraday disepverod that two pieces of Ice placed^in /tibnlaol, froezo together almost iostaatlj. Mr. Tyndftll says: "One hot summer day,I enterod a shop on the Strand on the window fragments of ice were lying in a ba« *i:i. The tradesman gare me perthissldi to take the pieces of ice in my- hBtriAi holding the first piece, I attached all the other pieces in basin to it. Tho thermometer was then about' sixty degr&§, and yet all the pieces were frozen together.' In this way Mr. Tyndall formed a chain of ice. The experiment mqgrl* made even in hot water. Throw Hw6 pieces of ice into a pailfull of almost boiling water, keep them in contact and they will freeze together despite the high temperature.^Mr. Faraday made another experiment of the same sort. He threw into a vessel full of water several small pieces of ice. They floated on the surface of the water. The moment one piece touched anether there was an instantaneous freezing.. Attraction sooh brought all the piece* in contact, so that in an instant an ice chain was formed.
An ice wheel turning on a surface of ice refreezes at the point of contact during tbe rotation a series of cracks are heard, which show the ear that successive freezings are constantly taking plaee. The phenomenon of refreezing is easily explained! At the surface of ice the atoihs, which are no longer in equilibrium on the outside, tend to leave their n^ghbors* as, happens in boiling or evaporating. Melting ensues. But if two piece* of ice are brought together, the atoms resume their relations with.their neighbors and tauta* position ensues. Inconsequence or this property ice is endowed with a singular plasticity. A rope and a knot, or a buckle may be made of ice. The school boy who fills bis hand With snow and com* pressed it into a ball, produces the phenomenon cf refreeaing, and forms an ice ball sufficiently hard to prove a dangerous projectile.
This explains the extraordinary rigidilry of the bridges of snow which are often in the Alps Buspended-oves deep orevases. Alpine guides by cautiously Walking on these Bnow masses freeze the particles to* gether and transform the snow into ice. If snow be compressed in moulds, ice statuettes may be obtained. ?ill a hollow ball with snow, press. it as hard as possible, and may obtain, ice bail* admirably translucid. Nothing would. J*e easier than to dine with er service made of. moulded snow. Snow compressedln this way does not melt so rapidly as might te thought. Ice requires a great deal of heat before it melts. A layer of ice often becomes a protection againBt cold., If you would prevent anything from sinking to a temperature below thirty-two degree^ during tbe very severe frosts we know you have but to wrap it in wet rag's. The process of freezing give* to the ^pqf£coii« ing bodies all the heat neceisary "to ~de." stroy it. The water in the rags slowly forms small pieces of ice on the rag, and in tbe mean time disengages beat which warms the object wrapped in the rage.
A trefl wrapped in rags, or in moss saturated with water, does not freeze, even when the thermometer is'seven degrees below the freezing point, The slowness with which the ice melts is well knows. During the winter of 1740 the Ozar built at St, Petersburg a magnificent palace of ice, which lasted several years. Since then cannon have been made of ice, and they, have been loaded with balls and fired. They were fired ten. times without bursting. It is, consequently, indisputa* ble that ice melts slowly, and may be turned to good account in tho polar regions. In Siberia the windows' bate panes of ice. The remarkable property' which particles ®f ice are endowea of moulding themselves iato different by refreshing, easily explainsliow glaciere make their way through narrow gorges and expand in valleys. ^Fhe ice iitferoKen into fragments, which refreeze whenever thev touch.—Saturday
Night.

Bight beside me at the table sat a member from one the back towns, who had perhapa never taken dinner at a hotel before in his life. Beforn his plate was 'a dish ibf peppers, and ha kept looking at them. Finally, as the waiters were slow about bringing up the things, be took tin hjs^ fork and soused one in his mouth.
