•An inventive young lady has rocently set the fashion of keeping compliment albums. Whenever she heats a good thing said about her she writes it in her album, and persuades the person reported to have said it to sign his name to it From the way in which people delight in "picking others to pieces,'' we should judge that a left handed compliment album would be more quiekly filled.

It Is easy to explain why such
crowds of customer*1 are daily found at Tuell, Ripley & Co popular Dry Goods House. They are alive to the wants oi their customers, are constantly receiving new and choice fabrics from purchases now being made by ene of the firm fn the East, and they are selling many good* at lower prises than before the war, which their special notice this day indicates*. S
SYSTEMATIC BBSBVOLSHCB.—We learn the operations of the Benevolent Society of Indianapolis have been productive of very much real good, in that city, and have been highly successful in relieving the wants of the really worthy and distressed. Besides the regular board of officers, the city is divided into twenty-six districts, in each- of which visitor* and and agents are appointed, having a special field to oversee. Another eommittee has charge of the suburbs and transient persons. Upon these committee* are rep* resentatives of tbe most influential and wealthy citiaens, as well as thoae who are practical workers in moderate circumstances.
The visiting committees are specially instructed to diligently search out such cases as are really needy, but who aTe too timid to ask assiitance, and yet always most deserving and that a liberal shave of the Society's benefactions be be*towed upoiTsueh casts wherever foand.
All persons are earnestly advised not to give any aid, except a meal to the boagry, to street applicants for help, but that such persons be directed to the nearest committee of the 8oeiety to their home for relief. This course, whieh ha* been regularly practiced, has almost entirely done away with street begging, most ef sueh applicants being impostors.
The Second Lecture of the Course^
under the auspices, of the Young Mens Christian Association of thi* eity, will be dolivered at Dowling Hall, on Saturday evening, December, 14th, by A. M. Griswold, Esq., better known as the "Fat Contributor." Subject: "Injin Meal."
This Lecture is said to be exceedingly humorous, the subject giving a fine seope for his versatile talent.
The Association is desirous of furnishing as great a variety of matter In their coureo of lectures as possible, and we believe that tbey not only deserve, but will receive, the liberal patronage of the lepture-going community. In refereace ton lecture delivered by "Tbe Fat Con. tributor" in G»tham, the New York Tribune comments as follows "Gris wold is a born humorist^ and livee in an atmosphere of humor. He wa* born to create fun, and lives to fulfill his mission. Humor is in him, and all about him—drops from his lips, spring* from his gestures, dances over his face, (a* he said of two tears) stands in one eye, and sits down in the other. His spirit* are exuberant, and the fountain whence hi* conceits come, is an original, and not a depository of other men's wit To this, those who heard him lecture last evening, will bear cheerful testimony. He came before his select audience in the best of moods, find that mood he straightway made every hearer share. A happy introduction put him #n rapport with those -wbo came to bear him, and his felicitous ramblings 'Among the Red Men,' and way from them—oftener away from them —bis genial, varied, mo*aic monologue of an hour and a quarter, with it* hundreds of quips and quirks its sharp hit*, it* good naturcd local allusions, its occasional

Mr. Lawes, from a gjleot Committee, made the following repot t, which was ap proved:
The Committee app inted at the last regular meeting ot Council to consider what steps should be taken to render more effective the market regulations now existing for cheapening provisions, both animal and vegetable, in our market places have had the same under consideration, and beg leave te report
The Committee believe that the only mode of conducting the markets, so as to accomplish what the Council desired in passing tbe resolution under which .they were appointed, was by reducing the rent of the stall*, and throwing open 4he build ing for every one to sell who could pay a reasonable rent for them. That is, by inviting competition and drawing into it a larger number of dealers. But we found that the present occupants of the stalls had poasmion of them for two year* from May laat—for the aeeond yestr at such prices as might be fixed upon them by the Couneil. Under these eircum*tance*, the Committee did not deem it their duty to recommend any meaaure for present action of the Council.
We deem It b**t, at the preaent time, to allow the question to remain open for sueh measure* and ordinanees as may be auggwted hereafter, in the hope that when the time ihall arrive for fixing the rent of the stall* again, the Council will be better prepared to make sueh a scale of priee* for them a* will invite a better competition (or plans In the publie mar kits, and, consequently, cheapen the price of meat* and vegetables to our citiaens.
There i* a general complaint of high priece en every hand, and it i* the duty of the Couneil to apply some remedy if within its power.
We requsat that the Committee he di*« charged from the further consideration of the subject, and that the Council eonsidcr the proper remedies to be applied when the term of the present leases shall expire in May next. THOMAS X. LAWO
THOMAS DOWLIVO,
The Superintendent of the City Ceme. try reported twenty Interments for the past month, eighteen from the eity and two from the eounlry.
Mr. Dowling offered the following, which was adopted Bnohfti, That the School Board Trustee* be again respectfully requested to make their regular report to this Council, as is provided by law, and that the Clerk furnish them a copy of this resolution!
Resolution adopted. MOTIOV*. & By Mr. Minshall, that a eommittee of three be appointed to tfonfer with tbe County Commissioner* in regard to the Registry and Election Board. Motion carried and the Mayor appointed Messrs. Minshall, Dowling and Lawes as such oommittee. •i.'

j'' FORTUNE FL FAYORITK A LUCKY TICKKT HOLDKK.—The
temple of Fortune,
even in this hard, practical, matter of fact, is still open for those who have courage to worship at her shrine. We not unfrequently find men who seem to havie a surer hold upon the fickle goddess than was ever gained in tho labratory o! the philosopher. An instance ot the kind his just come to our knowlege. On the 16th ^of last month a ticket was sold IvyMurray, Eddy & Co., Managers of the Kentucky'State Lottery, located nt Covingtop, Ky., to one of their correspondents «in Philadelphia. In due time the drawing took place, under the management of the firm we bave named, and, like all th^r business, under the guarantees of fairness provided in the laws of the State, and which have won for the JECentucky Lottery Managers so high a reputation for upright dealing. The Philapolphia purchaser of the ticket referred to—a well known citizen, whose name is withheld at his request, as all the business of Messrs.
Murray, Eddv & Co. is held in strictest confidence—findajhimself to-day tho lucky possessor of the capital prize, a handsome fortune of fifty thousand dollar?, which amount bus been promptly remitted to him. Such an instantanoous jump to wealth is well calculated to bring back to- memory old-world stories of fairy gifts yet almost every week we hear of similar result* of lucky speculations in the Kentucky drawing.— Covington (Ky.)

FACTS
—The follow
ing interesting statistic*, we gather from the quarterly returns, made, we believe, under oath, by the several manufacturers of sewingmachines throughout the United States. The figures which we present, aind which we have been at some pains to collect, show at a glance the wonderful growth and great importance of this branch of -American manufactures. It will be observed, that one company alone has produced and sold within the year, over forty three thousand machines. It is somewhat remarkable that, during the recent stagnation in trade, this business has been but slightly, if at all, affected. But below are the figure?, in detail: SEWING-MACHINES

Total single thread machines... 18,970 The foregoing facts and figures we find in the Financial Chronicle, of the 7th inst. About a year or so ago, as our Teaders will remember, we published a sories of articles descriptive of some of the great manufacturing interests in this country. We then selected and described, as the representative and leading concern in the department of sewing-machines, the immense establishment of tbe Singer Manufacturing Company, located in this city, and we are now pleased to find that we did not in the least exaggerate or overestimate the importance of tbe company in question. It is noteworthy and somewhat suggestive, that the Singer Company who did not, as we understand, take the trouble of visiting or even of sending, their machinos to the Paris Exposition— who seemingly do not in the least care for either gold medals or red ribbons, and whose name is rarely seen in print— should, nevertheless, eclipse all other similar concerns in the magnitude of their business. There is, of course, a reason for all this, but we leave our readers to find that out for themselves.—Home Journal.
