It consists in inhaling through the nose the emanations of ammonia contained in a smelling bottle. If the sense ef smell is completely obliterated tho bottle should be kept under the nose until the pungency of the volatile alkali is felt The bottle is then'removed, but only to be reapplied after a minute the second applica* tion, however, should net be long, that the patient may bear it. This easy operation being repeated seven or eight times in the course of five minutes, but always very rapidly, cxcept tho first time, the nostrils become free, the sense of smell is restored, and the secretion of the irrita* ting mucus is stopped. The remedy is said to his peculiarly advantageous to singers.

ter weather all classes of people are troubled with cold feet. All classes have the icy horror alike and no shoe and boot dealer has yet succeeded in furnishing ft preventive. A youug lady in this city, however, has tried the following recipe, and declares that it "works like a charm." Tho method is this: "I am troubled with cold feet, but I manage to keep warm 1j lying in bed every morning until my mother has built a rousing fire and prepared breakfast. I then get up, place my feet on the front of the stove, eat my morning meal, read the news, and after warming some flannels and wrapping them about my 'poor feet,' returned to bed, where I remain until nearly noon. I repeat this every twenty«four hours, and find it very comfortable.

Winnesheik.—The following is a let ter in answer to one written by some responsible gentlemen of this city to the Winnesheik Insurance Company, in con sequence of representations made by Mr Wheeler, the former agent, to its policy holders in this vicinity, that the assessments would not be collected, and he
Mr. W. was at this offics some three weeks since and wanted the Company to compromise the matter Of assessment in Terre Haute by charging the parties Stock rates. We held that they having instrrad on the mutual plan, they must take their chances with other mutual members, and if they would not pay their assessments and we could not collect it, (Mr. W. seemed to think we could not, by law, in Indiana) the policies will be void and we be relieved of that much risk, which 'Will be so much gained.
As to breaking faith with the policy holders, we do not see where that comes in as we have always paid all losses in Indiana the same as in this State, and thftt is ftll we agreed to do by our policies.
Undoubtedly Mr. W. feels aggrieved because we would not take Stock rates and let him settle with the policy holders— had we done'so, there might be some truth in his assertion that we had "broken Caith" with the policy holders.
Find enclosed a copy of our charter and by laws, premium note, and list of losses, Respectfully, 28d2w. Wm. Tremor, Sec'y.
