Franklin isking lor Worfe When a youth, Franklin went' to London, entered a printing office and inquired if he eould get employment. Well do you really under stand the art of printing? Can you really set type?"-

Franklin stepped up to one of the cases, and in a very brief space of time sSt up the following passage from the first chap ter of Johh: •'Nathanie said unto him, can any good thing come out of Nazareth? Pnilip said unto him, come and see."

It was done so quickly, so accurately, and contained a delicate reproof so appro-

In the first place it is evident that the real estate investment in this case will not bring so large a return in territorial area as the seven millions with which we bought Alaska. In the latter speculation we got 371,875 square miles of territory—' in the three Danish islands constituting the proposed purchase, we would get an area of 110 square miles.

Santa Cruz, or St. Croix, is the largest of the islands in question. It is situated 65 miles southeast from Porto Rico, and has a population of about 25,000. Its extreme length is 20 mile9, and its extreme breadth is five miles. The soil is very|fertile, its chief production being sugar cane. St. Thomas, tbe second in rank, lies 38 miles east from Porto Rico—has an area of 24 square miles, and a population of about 15,000. The surface of St. Thomas is generally mountainous, and only 2,500 acres are under cultivation. Its chief value consists in its advantages as a commercial depot.
