Look Out fob Him.—An exchange ta»ye that a pedler. has been traversing) the .country offering to soli a splendid piaste for burnishing silver, and always asking for s!Ivo.rYa?,o to try its merits upon, At several places whore he has been, burgla rios occurred within a few days, and jit is

that this poddling is only a pre-

tonco to loarn who has silverware and ,, wherc it Is kept, so as to givo his accom~ plicos knowledge of the best place# to visit. No doubt this scoundrel will take this soction in his route, and we warn jour citizens to look out for him.

Nearly every town in the State is

cursed with bold set of scoundrels and thieves, A most daring outrage occurred At Evansville Wednesday evening, worth mentioning from its novelty. A young iadv wont inta a wood-house, and as she stooped down to get some wood, a man seized hor by the hair, which was put tip in two braids, and one of the braids, com prising one-half her hair, severed from her head close to the scalp. The braid of hair was found afterwards about fifteen feet from the spot whero the outrage waa committed, he scoundrel having probably dropped it in his hurry to get away. This is the second outrage of the kind that has been committed in that city within a few Weeks,

Something new in the way of

evehing amusements has been inaugurated in this city by tho young people connected with the First Baptist church. Thurs day evening last was their regular church social, and some thirty or forty couples assembled at the parsonage, dressed in every variety of fancy and fantastic costumes, and all masked. When all were congregated, the gentlemen and ladies, in pairs, went over to the residence of Dr. Mahan, where after tbd usual cxercises of social gatherings, at about ten o'clock, masks were removed, and not a few were taken aback' When they ascertained who they had been doing the agreeable to dun ing the evening, and many amusing and ludierous situations were developed.

Mistaken Confidence.—The Sullivan

Democrat

tells of a distinguished citizen

of that county, Mr. John Phelps, was re» cently charged with Stealing a hog, across the river, (John lives conveniently near to the river for operations in either Illinois or Indiana.) It being a very insignificant charge, in his estimation, he boldly appeared before the Court and stood his trial, which resulted in his oonviction and sentence to the Penitentiary for one year I Mr. Phelps' astonishment and indignation, we understand, knew no bounds. He made known his sentiments of Illinois justice in a speech of some length to the Court boldly confessing that he had often done things many times werse than this contemptible little hog scrape, and been acquitted, and now he was excessively mortified to think he had respected the summons of the Court and appeared for trial.' The first lot of nails made in New

Albany were delivered on Tuesday last. The

{bmikertial

of that city Says:

"This enterprise opens up a new field of industry in the West, and its success will demonstrate the fact that energy, tact and enterprise can thrive as well in New Al bany as in Pittsburg or more Eastern cities. New Albany is fast becoming the first manufacturing city in {ha West?'

A trial of their boilers and engine was made, last Saturday, and vpre found to be in good working condition. That this furnace will be as great a success as that pf the Western Iron Company there caty be no doubt and better success should not be asked.—Brazil

Tfy&e^rieetj ings have been attended by the leading teachers of both sexes, representing the' different sections of the State and ail th^ grades of our educational institut^psj from the primary school to the ^Onivbrtir ty. They have always been open to ihe public, and not unfrequently the attendf ance of friends of education has been very large. •,

This Association has been instrumental in contributing largely to the promotion of the causo of education in this State.— It has stimulated teaehers to self-improve-ment, it has diffused just views as to the duties, the position, the requisite qualifications, and the proper compensation of teachers. It has disseminated valuable information concerning school 'economy, methods of teaching, and the legitimate objects and aims of discipline and instruction, and it has done much to awaken and keep alive in the community a sense of the value and importance
