DAILY EXPRESS
TKRKK HAUTK, 1NU.
Tuesday Morning,
tailed «t the saloons 6f that city. That will do pretty well for a Yankee town of
that size. |j,M A*! THE Boston Advertiser recommends the
press to keep a standing head of "Boiler Explosion," so as to facilitate the work of rushing through the accounts of such dis-
asters.
THE late Democratic successes seem to have placed the editor of the National Intelligencer utterly beside himself. Ha is bursting with bile, bitterness and be
som.
Ir the popular will is to be obeyed, and if tho lato elections are an indorsement of Mr. Johnson, how can tho Democracy avoid nominating him for the Presidency in 1868 "Will it not be too great a risk
to nominato any one else?
HON. BAYLESS W. HAKNA is talked of by his Democratic friends as the proper man to represent Vigo county in the State Senate during tho next term. It matters but little who tho opposition run tho Republicans will elect "their candi
date by a handsome majority.
THE NOW York World is the ablest arid most influential Democratic newspaper in the United States. It denounces Pendle ton's scheme for. repudiation as an outrago. upon the National credit. There is no uniformity of sentiment betw.een the Eastern and'Wcstern Democratic'journals
on this subject.
THE Democratic papers continue their
howl about high taxation. In doing so they kilt publish their own shame. The rebellion was of .Democratic origin waB organized by a Democratic Cabinet^ and acquiesced in by the Democratic
leaders of tho country, and as one result of this Democratic treachery and treason tho people are now burdened with the taxation about which the Journal and other Democratic papers complain .•
THE Italian controversy i3 trian gular Tho parties are the people, tho Pope, and tho Italian Government. The Govern ment is involved in the agreement of Sep tomber, to maintain the Pope in his pros ent position. The people demand the unity of Italy and tho establishment the Capital at Rome, the ancient seat of Empire. The Pope insists, and France aids him, in holding on to tho supreme control of Rome and a few small provin ces that are attached to the Vatican, is evident, trom the spirit of the people that a state of war in spirit, if not in fact' will subsist between the Emperor France and the people of Italy until the Roman theocracy is suppressed.
TflE .JcuriiuJ-propriotors have no notion of selling out and investing their means in "gold bearing bonds," They say that kind of an investment does not pay woll as tho printing business. All the Journal can do in this rcspect is to de nounce every farmer and mechanic who has investod a hundred dollars in Gov ernment securities, as bolonging to the "privileged class," and as boing a "bond ed aristocrat.1'' They (tho farmer and mechanic) might, with the samo proprie ty, on tho contrary, donounce the propri etors of the Journal as being "typographical aristocrats," or as belonging to the "editorial aristocracy," Thore is just a3 much reason in ono as there is in the other.
IF thore has been anything in relation to which Mr. Johnson has been strenuous in his declarations since ho entered upon tho duty of President, it was in relation to his.steadfast determination not to be a candidate for tho Presidential chair in 1868. He was fond of representing him. self as sated with honor. Ho had known
every onjoymcnt which a veteran officeholder could feel. Ho had been an alder man, Common Councilman, member of Congress, Vice President, and President. What more could a man of modorato desires, such as A. J., require? No! hehad been so long in high positon that he wanted to come down. Ho was not prepared to suffer again in office, and expected that tho people would favor him so much as to let him off. But it is to be feared that Mr. Johnson was in this quite as insincere as he has been in almost everything else that ho has said sinco he has occupied the Executive chair. It is evident that he is anxious once more to solicit the sweet voices of tho dear people. The article in the National Intelligencer, which set out to instruct the Democratic party as to its duty in regard to the next Presidential nomination, is suggestive of an alarm lest the claims of Mr. Johnson as a Democratic candidate may not bo overlooked.—— Don't be in a hurry scroams the Intelligencer. Don't go and elect your delegates now. Wait and soo if you will not be afforded a better candidate than any that has yet been named and after you know Who 4#, then elect your delegates, so that they may be chosen to nominate him.— This will scarcely pass as disinterested advico. Tho earnestnes with which it has been givon to an organization to which Mr. Johnson has all along insisted he owed no allegiango is ludicrous, and we thould supposo that tho leading journals of tho Democratic organization Would, disclaim tho right of tho President or his organ to dictato to them.

The equiO(B tbat draw this can by no means go the gait of the human to whose necessities they ministor, and they have been dhitoged a number of times since Weston left Portland. The change is effectpd, I un derstand, not by hiring fresh horses, but by "swapping," in which operation iri»jl$i$ethos0~tray«litiftin stick a hurried tnanner as this party are apt to be decidedly chiseled, and the animali I saw to eight bear nie out in the idea. In fact, it fans fallen to the lot of few men to be

Weston is morbidly sensitive of being approached closely whilo(v^k]kjng, probably fearful that some ono,-with pecuniary interest in tho result drUiS undertaking will tread on his feet and disable him. He walks ,in a, clear space of some ten foot in diameter, preceded and followed by & person -pboso duty it is to see that the charmed "circle is not intruded upon. He is a thin, but muscular, man, wift a clean shaven face, and altogether a pjQjisaqte^)rggsion of countenanco. His age Is said to be twenty»soven. In movement he is lithe and activo as a panthor. As the village of Batavia drew nearer lh,o„cr£wd grow in numbers, and when the town was fairly- reached, It seamed as though nil its inhabitants had turned out ta wolcome Weston. The people were curious, of course, and disposed to crowd on the pedestrian, but they were kept from treading upon him by the Tig» orous efforts of his attendants, Aqd the Eagle Hotel was reached, In safety, a few minutes after 9 o'clock.
A largo Jbonfire Had' been made at the cornor by tho hotel, amd Its hall and piazza wero .orowded^ with sightseers.— But a lane Wfts speedily made through this mass of humanity, and Weston passed, likdr'fi flash through the hrtll Intd an upstairs room. A few, however, your correspondent among tho number, were permitted to see Weston resting. His first aetion on entering the room was natural, considering the circumstances. Ho took a comfortsble'pcsition on bn lnvitingjofa and had his shoes taken off. These at oace became an object of curiosity to those in the room. Weston, by the way, according te his custom, had changed bis drees before entering the village, and appeared in a doable breasted frock* coat and ruffed shirt. Beclining on his sofa, I had, for the first time, a fair look at him. To me he appeared timLaut, did not, notice this in his gait on the road, but his face had that care-worn expression which loss of sleep or great fatigue produces. He was cheerful, however, and -replied, with unfailing good-humor, td the numerous questions that were put to him.
There were several ladies in the room, and to .them he was especially attentive,
