THE intimation which Mr. Johiison has given through the National Intelligencer( that he is candidate for the Democrat nomination for President, has met with no kindly response. The Copperheads despise him almoBt as heartily as Republicans do, and in their National Convention there will be none so poor as to do him reverence.
THE Democrats of Vigo county are to hold a convention here next month for the purpose of appointing delegates to thfir State Convention to be held at Indianapolis the 8th of January. That con mention, in order to preserve the coiisis tency of the party, should resolve that the war was a failure and that rebellion Mid Democracy had triumphed.
THS Copperheads are in a quandary wbo to select for their candidate for jthe ntft Presidency. Pendleton is the choice of the western wing, and in the opinion of the New York
THE
Tribune, is the "coming
num." But the Empire Democracy don't like him. The
World is strongly opposed
to his paper redemption scheme, and reflect! the prevailing views of the loaden of its party in the city of New York, if not in the State at large. Governor Seymour, or possibly General McClellan will be its choice, and in view of the late election its choice will be especially po tential in the Convention. Nothing would please the Democrats so well OB to run General Sherman, but they know very well that he would not suffer his name to be used in opposition to General Grant, and it is not probable that he wouldu ndcr any circumstances whatever consent to run on the Copperhead ticket. Either played out Seymour, George the Unready,, or Pendleton the Repudialor, will, in all probability, be chosen andboaten.
Mobilo Times,, if we may judge
fcom an article we see copied in aNew York puper, is wonderfully Worried ai what it calls the ropciited outrages poipatrated upon the people of the South by the military commanders of the different districts. The removal of the ex-rebe^ General Henry T. Haya fufnisfies the. Times with a themo upon which it expends a good deal of venom and ferocity" It says:—"Thus, outrago after outrage is inflicted on a poople v.'hich, twenty-four hours after having surrendered their armsi were ready to forgive and forgot their wrongs and sufferings." This is theiold story. Under the sham pretext of a superlative patriotism, these men stirred up a causeless rebellion, and now throw the blame upon the peaceable North. The convention of the people of Alabama, in January 9, 1861, resolved that they would not submit to the administration of Lincoln and Hamlin, since they were elected upon the principle that the Constitution did not recognize property In slavos, and slavery should net be extended into the Territories, and should in time be extinguished and on January 11th passed an. ordinance of secession, which was not allowed to be submitted to the popular vote. Previous to this, on January 4th, the United States arsenals at Mount Vernon, below Mobile, were seized by the State, and volunteers left Montgomery to aid ia the capture of the forts at Pensacola.— On February 16th, Jefferson Davi3 arrived at Montgomery, Alabama, and in response to an ovation of the people, stated, among other defiant threats, that those who opposed the South should "smell Southern powder and feel Southern steel." After the firing upon Sumter, April 12th, Mr. Walker, the rebel Secretary of War, prophesied that the Confederate flag would float over the dome of the Old Capitol at Washington before!the first of May, and might eventually float over Fanueil Hall. Wrongs and sufferings" of the Soujtb after this! The shamelessness, which can thus give the lie to every fact in history, and even as told by themselves, is unparalleled in the annals ef ingratitude. The calm land sublime devotion, the cool and confluent courage, the assurance that their sacrifice*, and services will be removed from yeftr to year have all subsided, and instead of jinaking good to the uttermost their rights to self-government, the Southern chivalry now unpack their souls in words and fall to cursing like a very drab. The problem whether the war should last one, or three or five years, has been solved, but not in the way Davis promised—by th withdrawal of the enemy from hisbordor.
The incomprehensible language used by thoso speaking of subjugating a poople whose interests lead them to resist attack, hd3 been thoroughly taught by a better schoolmaster than the stern statesman, ihe contrast between the arrogant confluence with which the Sou boldly defies iho power of tbo United Slates, hi.: ii:« cvary epithet of sc.ru upon a=soe'u.tba*. taa-Jo eacreJ by the ties of a comuwiviksu:ty. and the peevish scolding at tho taiUl:» re re a by he ii bora rvsinnnc.! reconstruction, luui.v shows how weak human resolutions sue when put to the tost. Louisa Hahlbach and Her TVorRs. The promptness with which the Works of this German authoress have been published by jthe APPLE-TONS of New York has created the impression that she is a most rapid writer. Indeed, some appear to think that works of fiction flow from her pen with unsurpassed frequency. This is quite a mistake. It is some fifteen years since her first work appeared, and the date of her publications during th$ las* ten years is shown in the following list:— "Archduke John and His Time," 12 Vols. 1859-63. Miss Muhlbach was born in 1814, and vras 'married to her late husband in 1839, and is fifty-three years of age. She has herself related the method which she pur* sues preparatory .to writing an historical romance she says "I have never writ-r-tea "a hook without having studied before*Mncf the theatre of the events. I must get ftcguainted with the l&nd and people taost khow -.the .country, its inhabitants •aii'd cities exactly, in order that I may represent vividly and correctly.'
TJje materials thus obtained of the &S4ii-oi tbostf great characters who figure so prominently in her works have doubtless feebn ample for several works relative .to each. The field in which she Mas wrought 'has b^eti so rich in great and stirring dramatic incidents, that it has required a masterly hand to use them."
)OOQ The Future of Our Country.
Hon. Joseph S. Wilson, Commissioner of the General Land Offics, has submitted Wife annual report to the Secretary of the Interior. Tbo report consists of five hunSS&d -and' sfeventy-six pages of manuscript, besides a special accompanying document trover one hundred pages. In the regu.i lar report the. statement is made that about 7,006,000'acres of public lands have been disposod of during the past year.— There is yet the immense amount of 1,460,000,000 acres of public land, including the lately acquired Kuseian territory. The report is made up to the 15th of October, Which ends the fiscal year. There are thirty maps£ully descriptive of the Stales and Territories, together with the most elegant and carefully prepared map of the '^j/Bd'thst has evvr been gotten up in any country, accompanying the report.
Tup special .paper inclosed with the re.port is one of the most interesting, instructive, and valuable documents that 1»$jr.cver been gotten up in this country, lo fully elaborates upon the mineral wealth of the United States, its gold and fcilvir products, the same in comparison witli the rest of the world, the quantity of gold, silver, and other precious metals jjhof&uuntities now in existence in this "country and in the world, and by this means showing the comparative wealth of this country. The paper speaks in detail of tho great Pacific slope—1,000 miles long and 680 miles wide, with an area of over 831,000 square miles, or about 5,000.000,000 of acres—sufficient to inhabit 100,000,000 of people. The great wealth and increase of this country and its future prospccts are thoroughly treated upon.—
The groat Pacific railways are fully ex pkined, and the tide of the Atlantic and Pacific shown.
The trade of tho Indies, of China, of Japan, of all the Eastern world, must flow into this country, and trhough this country to the rest of the world. To San Francisco, and thence to New York, all the precious metals of the Eastern world will find their markets for the world. Mr. Wilson shows how we are now three thousand miles ahead of England in our routes to China and Japan and the Indies. He shows iu full the necessary diversion of the, trade to this country, and its effects on our public lands in the Pacific slope and the Mississippi valley. He gives on the map of the world every railroad line comi pleted or in contemplation in this country. He speaks in detail of the various Pacific railroads, announces the important fact t&at by October, 1869, the main road will be finished, and the great steam horse will carry us from New York to San Francisco direct.
He says there are now 37,000 miles of completed railroad in this country, which, sihee their commencement, is at the rate of 1,000 miles a year. He further says that there are in course of construction 17,860 miles of railroad. For these roads completed, and for those in contemplation the Government has donated over 184,800,000 acres of land, and to the Pacific roads over 24,000,000 acres of land. He speaks in detail of the immense increase of the wealth of the country by the warranted advance in public lands bofdering on all those roads. Mr. Wilson's treated on our domestic and foreign trade, in these papers, are invaluable to our commercial world. He demonstrates that our present domestic trade is over $5,000,000.
He shows conclusively that we are bound to absorb the immense trade of Northern and Eastern Asia, by way of San Francisco and New York. He give* fuil details about the Suez Canal sb&w* how England has been acquiring immense wealth from Indian potoeMioni—her present income being over 78,000,000 pounds in tariffs for the last year just from that source shows how we are 3,379 miles nearer to Melbourne, Australia, than England or France tells us all about China and Japan, and gives our increas ing trade with thoso countries gives the names of the cities for trade, and how tho shipmehtsare made at San Francisco, then to Now York, and then to Europe, and through our own country gives an interesting account of the trip of tho steamer Colorado from San Francisco to Japan in twenty-seven days, and her return in Ihreio weeks laden with rich freight. The sanio trip for London or Paris would take ::i: f,y days each way. Rapidity of travel, -.* Wilson contends, will draw the travel and the trade. The teas and silks of China and Japan must come through us therost of the world. This trade was .uorih $360,000,000 last year to our Euroit:.m neighbors. We'll got this trade. It -is rapidly coming to us.
Mr. Wilson's learned and instruotive of thetrade of the world since tho time of Alexander the Great up to this ^r*sant'time-is altogether the best written rurfo on the subject we have ever bad t^n pleasure of perusing. His description of .'ur great country, its railroads, rivers,
|ias45
and other internal improvements
Jiis full description of the Pacific slope, with ite 100,000,000 acres of undisposed of public lands, and its great Pacific railways, is a State paper which every man ia this country desirous of being informed 6f out true national greatness and prosperity and our great prospects for the future will eagerly seek for. Mr. Wilson reports that there is room enough on the great Pacific elope for forty new States. He thinks that by the commencement of the' noxV century we will be a united country of all the great treasure shipments'of the worlds He says this country has commencod her grand imperial course, With this control of the Eastern trade in her power, and that the immigration and natural growth of the country will place us at over one hundred millions of people by tho year 1900. He speaks of the civilizing influence of our great democratic institutions, and their effect upon the rest of the world.

The Origin of Cats.-
The Egyptians adored the cat as a divinity, and the Swiss have chosen it as a symbol of liberty. History rarely condescends to mention it, »nd~poetfr4o-gen-eral ignore it, for, however valuable its qualities, the cat is not poetical.v Yet Goldsmith has given: glace ih exquisite "Hermit": Vf VI mJ
Around in sympathetic mirth, Its tricks the kitten tries The cricket chiips in the hearth,
The crackling faggot flies.
It is a common thing enough to call men "dogs," but Volumina in 'Coaolanus" calls them cats. In speaking of her •on she says: 'Twfts you incensed the rabble
Oats! that can judge as fitly of his worth, As I can of those mysteries whioh heaven Will not have earth to know. As to the "brindled cat" that mevled thrice before the three witcjiei. in Macbeth entered the cave, we can only applaud Shakspeare's good taste in giving her the precedence in that grand scenei
For nearly a thousand ye^s western Christendom scarcely knew th'e of cats and how their rats and mice wire kept down when no four-footed policeman patrolled the kitchen is more than we cian guess. j_
In tho tenth and eleventh centuries high prices were given for good mousors. They were of Nubian origin, and fiescfended from those domestic cats which the Egyptians possessed. No one knows how they found their way to Europe but there is reason to believe that the Romans imported them. Our ancestors hadiso high a sense of the. usefulness of the.animal that Howell Dha, or Howell the good, inserted among his laws one c^n corning it, The price of a kitten before it could see was to be a penny, and when it had killed a mouse, two pence. If its hearing or seeing was imperfect, if it bad not whole claws, or proved a bad mouser, the seller was to forfeit to the buyer the third of its value. If any one. stole or killed the cat that guarded the prinde's granary, the fine he had to pay was a milch ewe, with her lamb and fleece, ot as mush wheat as would cover the cat when held up by the tail with its head touching the floor. No reduction was to be made The very tip of tho tail must bB covered. Thus the price given for cats was high, considering the value of specie at that time, and the fact of laws being made to protect the breed of an animal which multiplies so fast, shows that in the iriiddlo ages it must have been scarce in Wales.

To the Editor of the New York tier aid: Respecting the relics of porcelain ware found in the late exhumations at Hercu laneum, which have been forwarded to the Society of Antiquities in London, whereof your correspondent says the bottle resembling Drake's Plantation Bitters was undoubtedly placed among the'ruins by the agent of Dr. Drake, we desire to state he is incorrect in every respect. If a bottle was found bearing our lettering, the language of the Ancient .Romans vas different from the accepted literature of that day. Our Agent has other business than this in Europe, and J^.npt boeU in Italy At all. No doubt Americans carry Plantation Bitters to Bome but trying lo impose upon a society of, Antiquarikns in this way, seems quite useless, and we do not appreciate the joke. It is unHec* estary for us to spend motley in Burope while we are unable to supply the demand for these celebrated Bitters hero.
