WALTHAM
W A E S
The true value of Machinery applied to Watchmaking is not that by ite nae Watches are made rapidly, bat that they are made correctly. Very few people know why a Waltham Watch should be superior to any other. In the first place, at Waltham the Watch Is regarded as only a machine, to be constructed like any other machine^ on mechanical principled. Tf the watchee ate good, it is because the machinery i. good. Of coarse there must be no defect in the principle or. plan of the movement—no mistake in tho sise. or shapes of the pieoei of wh'ch it is composed—nothing wanting in thetr properties, and no error in their positions. These points ouce thoroughly settlod, it ieata wholly with the machinery, constructed with infinite diversity of form and function expressly for the pnrpsse, to produce the finished piccet. By means of multiplying guages and microscopes, tests and inspections for the detection of wear* ki the cuttlag tools, and for faults and flaws in steel or stone arn made to accompany the work in every stage from beginning to end. As a Necessary result, the watch gees together a perfect machine. Every part Is found to fit properly in Its place. Every pin may be puanedxlll it pinches, and every screw turned home. Instead of a sluggish and feeble action the balance, even under thepresmre of the lightest mainspring, vibrates with a wide and free motion, and tho beat has thu clear ringing sound alwajs charactoristic of the Waltham Watch.— TJje machine Is a timekeeper from the start.
This system of watchmaking is unknown in foreign countries, and is entirely original with the Waltham Oompany. The Company claim that by it thoy produce watches that cannot be equalled for every quality whieh makes a~*atch valuable. Simple in plan and correct in principle, the* movement it net only beautifnlly finished, substantial, accurate and cheap, but 1. uniform in the minuteBt details, not easily damaged, and whou repaired Always as good as new. There are different grades of finish in tho different varieties of watches made by the Waltham Oompany, as there aft different sling and shapes to suit all tastes and means but every Watch that bears tho genuiue trade-mark of "WALTHAM" is guarantied to be a good eno, and nobody need be afraid to buy it.

Sabdaing a Giant.
Mr. Pillsbury, Warden of the State Prison in Connecticut, once received into the prison a man of gigantic statue, whose crimes had for seventeen years made him the terror of the country. He told the criminal when he came, he hoped he would not repeat the attempts to escape which he had made elsewhere, "It will be best," said he, '-that you and I should treat each other as well as we can. I will make you as comfortable as I possibly can, and I shall be anxious to be your friend and I hope you will not get me into difficulty on your account. There is a cell intended for solitary confinement but we have nevor used it(iand I should be sorrow ever to have to turn the key upon anybody in it. You may range tbe place as freely as I do—if yon trust me, I will trust you." The man was sulky, and for some weeks showed only gradual symptoms of softening under the operation of Mr. Pillsbury,s cheerful confidence. At length information was brought of th man,s intention to break the prison. The warden callcd him and taxed him with it the man preserved a gloomy silence. He was told it waa necessary for him to be locked in the solitary cell, and desired to follow the warden, who went first, carryiug a-lamp in one hand and a key in the other. In the norrowest part of the passage Mr. Pillsbury, a smalt, light man, turned round and looked in tho face of the stout criminal. "Now," said he, "I ask whether you have treated me as I deserve? I have done everything that I could to make you happy. I have trusted you, but you have never given me the confidence in return, and have oven planned to got mo into difficulty. Is this kind? And yet I cannot bear to lock you up. If I had the least sign that you cared for me—"
The man burst into tears. "Sir," said he, "I have been a very de» mon these seventeen years but you treat me like a man."
Come, let ug go back," said the Wardon. The convict had free range of the prison as before and from that hour he began to open his heart to the Warden, and cheerfully fulfilled his whole term of imprisonment.
Frantte Fishing.
"1 was once on Lake Winnipisiogee, in tho winter, fishing for pickerel,' says Brown "it was awful cold, and the ice was four and a half feet thick. Father was with me, and while I was thrashing my hands to keep 'em warm, I noticed that the old man had an all-fired hard bite. It was so hard'that it jerked the old feller through the hole in the ice, and I thought he was a goner, but just then I remembered that dad was awful fond of rum and tobacco, so I outs with a piece of niggerhead, soaks it in rum for a momont, and then baits, my hook with the weed, and drops it through the hole what tho old gentleman went into, and in less than ten minutes, gentlemen, I had a bite, and up I hauls the old man, as fresh as ever. But, gentleman, he kept the tobacco."
A prolonged whistle on the part of the audience, as though the yarn was not believed. "Its a fact gontlemen," continued Brown "and that rominds me of another story, which I don't mind tellin.' One Winter 1 was crossing the lake on the ico, and as I was goin' to a raisin' I had an inch augur in my hand. All at once 1 thought I'd. like to see how thick the ice was, so I bored a hole, and fourid that it was about two feet. Then I thought I'd find out how deep the water was, so I dropped my carpenter plumb line through the augur hole, and hang me if I didn have a savage bite before the lead touched bottom.
I pulled up and landed a seven-pound pickerel." Another prolonged whistle, and some one asked Brown how a seven-pound fish could get through an augurhole. "That's somethin' I had nothin' to do with," replied Brown. "All I know is the fish was caught and carried home, and I ate my share of him, and the old gentleman took his part. I don't bother my head on matters that I don't understand. And now who'll stand liquor
A Cosily Book.
The most stupendous price every obtained for any book was a copy of Boccaccio's "Decameron" of 1471. At the beginning of this century the copy, then and for a long time afterward considered to be unique, was in the posession of a London bookseller and was purchased by the Duke of Roxburgh for one hundred guineas. Two other copies are known now—one in the Ambresian Library at Milan, the other in the Imperial Library, Paris. But the first wants one and the second three leaves. The edition is said to have been suppressed by Papal authority, the 17th of June, 1812 is the

mania. Dibdin has a most graphic ac-" count of it in his "Bibliographical Decameron." One extract wil give the pith of his story of the public sale of this rare old book: "The honor of firing the first shot was due to a gentleman of Shropshire, unusedto this species of warfare, and who seemedto recoil from the reverberas tion of the report himself had made. 'One hundred guineas he exclaimed Again a pause ensued but anon the bind ng rose rapidly to five hundred guineas, the firing was but inasket and desultory Hitherto, however, it was evident that
At length all random shots chaired
and the champions before named (Earl Spencer and the Marquis of Blandford) stood gallantly ap to each other, resolving not flinch from a trial of their res spective strengths. A thousand guineas were bid by Earl Spencer, to which the Marquis added ten. You might have heard ft pin drop. All eyes were turned, all breatning well nigh stopped every sword was put home within its scabbard, and not apiece of steel was seen to move or glitter except that which each of these champions brandished in his valorous hand. At length Lord Spencer had bid £5,250. The Marquis quietly added his usual ten, and down dropped,the4hammer When the Marquis, library was disposed of in 1819, the day chosen for the sale of the famous book was the 17th of June, thi anniversary of its former sale. But nothing could revive the old excitement, and it was knocked down for £918 15s. It is now in the posession of Lord Spencer.
"Why don't you trade with me?" said a close fisted tradesman to a friend the other day. The reply was characteristic: "Yoy never asked me, sir. I have looked all through the papers for an invitation in the shape of an advertisament, and found none. I never go where I am not invited."
