The trueralue'of Machinery^applied to Watch making is not that by lta ns« Watohes arc mad* rapidly, but that they are made correctly. Very few people know why a Waltham Watch ihonld be superior, to any other. In the first place, at Waltham the Watch is regarded aa only a chine, to be constructed like any other machlne| on mechanical principles. If the watches ate good, it is because the machinery is good. Of course there must be no defect in tbe principle or plan of the fitorement—no mistake in the sizes or shapes of the pieces of wh'ch it is composed—no thing wanting in their properties, and no error in their positions. These points once thoroughlysettled, it tests wholly with the machinery, constructed with Infinite diversity of form and function expressly for the purpose, to produce the finished pieces. By means of multiplying guages and microscopes, tests and inspections for the detection of wear in the cottiag tools, and for fianltsand flaws in steel or stone arn made to accompany tbe work in every stage from beginning to end. As a necessary resnlt, the watch gees together a perfect machine. Every part is found to fit properly in its place. Every pin may be pusned till-it pinchej, and tvery screw turned home. Instead of a sluggish and feeble action, the balance, even under the pressure of the lightest mainspring, vibrates with a wide and free motion, and the beat has the clear ringing sound olwaj characteristic of the Waltham Watch.— The machine is a timekeeper from the start.
This system of watchmaking is unknown in foreign countries, and is entirely original with tbe Waltham Oompany. The Company claim that by it they produce watches tbat cannot be equalled for every quality which makes a watch valuable. Simple in plan and correct in principle, the movement is net only beautifully finished, substantial, accurate and cheap, but Is uniform in the minutest details, not easily damaged, and when repaired always as good as new. There are different grades of finish in the different varieties of watches made by the Waltham Company, as there are different sixes and shapes to suit all taster and means but every Watch that bear* the genuine trade-mark of "WALMAX" is guarantied to be a good ene, and nobody need be afraid to buy it.
EVERT .WATCH FULLY WARRANTED.

Ll.:' fi'. 'v.' A Safe Carried Off With One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars.
[From the Peoria, Democrat, Nor. 6. '"ij& For gome time past Pettis & Ipgalla, of Tremont. Tazewell county, have been doing a banking business, and haye become the depositaries of this surrounding busines men and farmers. They had es* tablished themselves in a snug banking house with a fire-proor vault, and deemed they were safe from the elements or burglars, "Within the vault was a large safe, and within that a steel burglar ptoof case weighing four or five hundred pounds, which it was deemed impossible for any one to break into.
On Friday morning last, an early riser was passing by the bank and noticed the door standing ajar, an indubitable evidence that a burglary had been commits ted. The proprietors of the establishment were notified, and on their arrival aj the sceno of action, an examination was made and it was found that the outside door of the building had been broken open: the door of the vault was cut through, the safe blown to pieces and the steel ciase carried away entirely. So far as known all of this work had been done Without alarming any one. It is probable that the burglars arranged their powder in the safe, and closed the door of the vault, before they ignited it, thus stifling the' noise made by the Explosion/
The safe contained from one hundred to one hundred and fifty thousand dollars in bonds, notes and and cash. The^ bonds belonged principally to people in rhoderf ate circumstances, and were in the nature of special deposite, so Messrs. Pettis & In* rails will not be responsible for them, the amount of money in the safe belongs, ing to the owners was not large, as they had fortunately made remittances before the burglary was committed, and the greater portion of the loss was in bonds, of various kinds, among which was the following:
One Tazewell county bond for $500, No. 9, dated June 4, 1867, and due June 4,1868, and thirty-three Pekin school bonds for $100 each, ofthe following num61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 98, 81, £2, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87,-88, 89, 90, 92, 93, 94,-95, 96, 97, 99, 100, 114,115. 116, 117, 118, 120.
The services ofthe Peoria detectives have been engaged, and a.dispatch sent to Chicago to get assistance from there to ferret out the matter, and word passed along the telegraph lines. Up to yesterday afternoon no clue hal been obtained to the perpetrators of the deed, though some arrests had been made on suspicion. The general impression is that the work was done by some one who was not an entire stranger to the premises.
An Unpicsant "Wanlly.'l The Evening Post says: The disregard 'of all the old-fashioned English and American notions about "personal rights" manifested by the •'prohibitionists" of Massachusetts, has been a sufficient cause for the reaction of' public sentiment displayed in thexecent election in that State.
People do not like to be coerced into morality, and, as a rule, will not^ be. Yet ooercion has a strange and indefinable charm for fome persons, when they have the power. The Springfield Republican says "It is a curious fact that ministers of the Gospel are apt to have a "wanity," as Sam Weller would say, for coercion. It has been so for. many aees. And when they Sfit on this hobby tney are the most intolarent and abusive and tyrannical people in the world. Laymen cannot lold a candle to them coercionists. And makes very little difference what faith they hold. A minister who teaches that rumsellers are sending drunkards straight to the joys of heavep by the hundreds, may be found contending for a law that fines a man or sends him to Jail.as a criminal for selling a glass of sweit cider, as the present law does. His opinion is infallibly right, and mast be enforced by pains and penalties."
Dr Chambers was no exception to the saying tbat a prophet is not without honor save among his own countrymen. "When he preached in .London his own brother James never went to hear him, One day, at the coffee house which he frequented, the brother was asked by one ignorant of the relationship, if he had heard the wonderful countryman and namesake of his? "Yes?' said James, somewhat^ drly, "I have heard him." "And what do you think ot him?" Very little indeed,*" was the reply. "Dear mel" said the inquirer, "when did you bear him?" "About half an hour after he was born," was the cool answer.
A Curious painting was taken among others from the old Bull Inn, London, early in the present century. It is a portrait by Haymore, of one Van Horn, a Hambro merchant, of whom posterity should know more. This "Van Horn, belonged to a club called the American Society held at the above named Inn for twenty-two years and in that period he drank 35,697 bottles of wine, which was four and a half bottles a day. During the time he misaed but two days, one when he buried his wife, one when his daughter was married.
Balling the Wind.
Under this head an irascible gentleman complins. In the colums of an English, paper? of an offensive form which appeals for charity sometimes take. Afew weeks •go his servant lorwarded to him, at Paris a balky envelop, for which he had to pay quite a little stun in postage. He opened it with lively curiousity. It was nngned by a Mr. E. Witt, who described hinuelf as one of the committe appointed to collect funds for the restoration of the Church of St. Michael, Aldbourne, Wilts, and solicited a subscription. Unclosed were a recipe for the core of rheumatism^ strains and chilblains, a pen-wiper of black cloth, in the shape of a cat, and a printed circular to this effect*
This little Wiper[the black cat] was sent as a donation to the Aldbourne Church Restoration Fund, by a lone woman, whose kindred dust moulders]near its hollowed walls. Verily she hath done what she could."
Tbe gentleman intimates that the build* ing fund of the church of St. Michael, Aldbonrne, WaltSsf was not materially increased by his subscription. 1irt
