WALTHAM
W E S
The true value of Machinery applied to Watchmaking is not that by Its use Watches ars made rapidly, but that they are made correctly. Very few people know why a Waltham Watch shonld be superior to any other. In the first place, at Waltham the Watch la regarded an only a machine, to bo constructed like any other machine^ on mechanical principles. If the watches aie good, it is because the machinery is good. Of course there must be no defect in the principle or plan of the movement—no mistake iu the sizes or shapes of the pieaes of wh xh it is composed—nothing wanting in their properties, and no error in their positions. These points ouce thoroughly settled, it lests wholly with the machinery, con structed with infinite diversity of form and func tion expressly for the purpose, to prodnce the finished pieces. By means of multiplyingguages and microscope], tests and inspections for the detection of wear in the cutting tools, and for faults and flaws in steel or stone aro made to accompany tbe work in every stage from beginning to end. As a necessary result, the watch gees together a perfect machine. Every part is found to fit properly in its place. Every pin may be pusned till it picchei, and every screw turned home. Instead of a sluggish and feeble action, the balance, even under the pressure of the lightest mainspring, vibrates with a wide and fre=mo tion, and the beat has the clear ringing sound alwaj characteristic of the Waltham Watch.— The machine is a timekeeper from the start.
This system of watchmaking is unknown in foreign countries, aud is entirely original with the Waltham Oompany. The Company claim that by it they produce watches that cannot be equalled for every quality which makes a natch valuable. Simple in plan and correct in principle, tho movement is net only beautifully finished, sub utantial, accurate and cheap, but is uniform in the minutest details, not easily damaged, and when repaireJ always as good as new. There are difleront giades of finish in the different varieties of watches made by the Waltham Oompany, as there are different sizes and shapes to suit all tasted and moans but every Watch that bears the geuuine trade-mark of "Waltham" is guarantied to be a good ene, and nobody need be afraid to buy it.

"Carry Me On
The only case we remember which fully illustrates how lazy a person can get, is that of a man who, being too lazy to work, and on the verge of starvation, was made the subject of a consultation on the part of his neighbors. They finally decided to bury him alive. As they were bearing him to the grave, a good Quaker, looking over his gate inquired: "Friends, where do you go with that man "He is too lazy to work, and we are going to bury him," they replied. "Thee should not do so hard a thing as that," replied the Quaker. "Let him be idle if he will not work." "But he is starving." "Then I will send him some corn from my granary,"
Upon this liberal offer there seemed to be no resort but to let the man live, when he, turning to the Quaker, inquired "Is it shelled "No," replied the Quaker. "Willyou shell it for me?" :. -I'll see thee starve first,"|responded the irate disciple of William Penn. "Carry"me on, then," replied the vagabond ''I thought you had no real charity in your heart."
Tbe Beaver as an Engineer. At the meeting of the American Association for the advancement of Science, L. H. Morgan, Esq, of Rochester, read an interesting paper on the habits of the beaver. Having made this animal the subject of study for several year3, he was able to give many interesting facts' regarding the extent of their operations. On the Southern shore of Lake Superior, in Marquette County, he found remains of long canals and dams constructed by them for the purpose oi transporting their cuttings, consisting of trunks of trees two or three feot long, from the place where trees had fallen, to their lodges. Some of these canals were 300, 400 and 500 feet long. They were generally three feet wide, with an average depth of three feet. In order to manifest a continuous depth of water, they made dams at certain distances, and followed the Chinese plan—to whom the lock was unknown—of drawing their cargo from one level to another. Mr. Morgan has settled a long disputed point regarding species. From a com* parison of more than one hundred skulls of American beavers with four or five of European origin, he is enabled to state that both classes belong to the same family.

The operation did not apparently discommode the beast further than to arouse its mulishness," and to which it gave vent by a series of kicks that would do honor to Castello's circus ring. At this juncture, our informant ventured to remonstrate, when the following explanation was vouchsafed: "Dad whips mam (whack-kick,) mam whips sis, (whackkick,) and sis, (graitutous kicks,) darn her, beats me, an' I'm going to take it out I (whack.)." -4
A French letter says: "The other day there came to my apartment and old, but hale and hearty, and really jolly and honest French gentlemen, who had spent several years in America. We were discussing the subject of game and fish, &„ about which he was earnest and eloquent. He admitted that the shad -of America, were perhaps as good as any French fish, but when we came to speak of game, and the canvase-back duck was mentioned, be went off in a fit of enthusiasm, and declared, almost with tears in his eyes, that nothing in France or the world could equ al it. 'Ah!' said he, throwing himself bock in his chair, rolling up bis eyes ar.d patting his paunch 'ah! my dear stomach how delicious were those canvass-backs and how we did enjoy them.' A Dresden correspondent writes: "I do not notice that the New York or Boston belles are so much horrified at the gods and goddessses, most of whom are "considerable nude," as English accounts of American female prudery would lead one to believe they would be. Indeed, one would hardly wonder if they were, here in Dresden: forBubens has certainly done his "wery fiercest" in the way of exuberant and undraped flesh, in some of the large pictures adorning the three principal saloons.
