Awkward.

A young HooBier, who has been mar* riod about a year, left home for the purpose of selling the patent right of a churn. He and the young wife parted with tears and many regrets, alleviated only by the prospect of speedy wealth. While wandering over the State of Indiana, the young husband met a delusive little female that made him forget his Mary Ann at home, and his patent churn. They loved—not wisely but very comfortably. The husband wrote to his wife, that his business called him to Ohio, and that he should be detained there some time, but that he was doing first rate. HetheR took his deluder to Cleveland and established themselves at a hotel. Getting out of money he wrote home to a friend for a supply, begging that friend not to say a-word about it. The friend sent the money, and then, like a true friend, laid the letter betore the deserted wife. She saw it all at once. Her dear husband had met with a terrible accident, and did not wish to alarm her, and was thus trying to keep it secret. With a true wife's devotion she flew on the wingB of love and the express train to alleviate tho sufferings of her bosom's lord. Early one morning she bolted into the room of her suffering spouse. He was just drawing on one boot. Giving him a frantic embrace, she saw over hi$ shoulder a few straggling curls peeping out from under the bed covering. Seizing the other boot, the wife went to the bed and stripped it of its covering.— In a moment she saw it all—the true stata of the case. She used the boot vigorous* ly. The screams of the victim soon filled the room with spectators. The enraged wife still plied her boot, until the girl with the curls sought refuge in the hall, with scarce anjthing on her but the awful bruises of that cruel boot. The wife and truant were then left alonti to enjoy the only bliss left to man since the fall.— The next day they sought their Indiana home together. How sad 1—Louisville paper.

A Horse-Car Incident.

A horse-car is the witness of varied life and incident, which are often not only interesting, but worthy the compliment of a litlej printer's ink. An incident occurred in Boston which is deserving of a paragraph. A lady passenger discovering that her pocket bad been picked of its portemonnaieiand contents, including a generous supply of cash for shopping and some other pleasant poss^ssiotas. On learning this disagreeable fact, she said, with commendable emphasis: "Mr Conductor, I have had my pocket picked since I entered this car, and, as no one has got out, the thief must now be here. I want you to call a policeman at once and secure my property." The conduc* tor, in a slow, drawling tone: "I guess, mum, none ofthe passengers have got it —you might have dropped it in the street such things are very common it wouldn't be any use to call .the police. These passengers all look honest, and they would make a tremendous fass if I shut them up." The lady: "But I insist upon it the thief is in this very car I have had my portemonnaie in my hand since I entered it. I insist that the police be called is my right and I demand it.,' At ths ipoint a short lady, with a keenj umping eye, and with a brisk movement, almost leaped from her seat, and said very sharply, "1 declare, it is really too bad that the conductor will not call the police. If there is no gentleman in the car that is man enough to do as the lady wishes, then I will." She thereupon made a rapid exit from the car, and shot down the street like an arrow. She was the pickpocket.

To imagine that every hour taken from sleep is an hour gained. To act on the presumption that tt\e smallest room in the house is large enough to sleep in.

God bless you, my preserver,my benefactor!"

Color In the Horse.

It is and old expression that a good horse cannot be of a bad color, still we find that the ready sale of a horse depends largely on his color. Some hues are strongly objected to, and prejudice is carried so far as to deny merit to an animal not marked according to the standard of the critic. We have not much faith in color, believing that good qualities are not partial to any particular hue. White horses, it is claimed, live the greatest age. In 1803, a gentleman farmer, residing near Ludlow, England, had a team of four greys, whose united ages were a hundred years. These grays were all lively animals, performing their work with dispatch. Such a circumstance certainly is unusual, and we may regard it in the light of a coincidence As coincidence does not prove a propo sition, the history of the Ludlow team has no speaial influence in giving charac ter to the theory that grey is the most de sirable color in horse, because it is associ» ated with the greatest longevity. A grey horse may be hardy, and so may be brown, a black, a cbesnut, or a baj. Turf, Field and Farm.

How to set Gate Posts. Take equal quantities of water-lime and quicklime, and mix with sand as usual put two or three inches of mortar and coarse gravel in the bottom of the hole, so the end of the post will not come to the ground then set your post in, top-end down fill in several inches of coarse grav el, pound it down then more mortar and more gravel, and so on until the cement is raised above the ground several inches around the post. Slant it away from the post injevery direction so as to turn off the water then take coal tar and a brush, paint around the bottom of the post, and fill the interstices between the post and cement with coal tar. Only mix enough mortar for one hole at a time. Tour post will be as solid as if set in stone it don't heave out with the frost and sag around and pull the boards off as the water and air cannA get to it.

A foreign correspondent, a lady, tel Is a story which illustrates the great inconvenience of having nerves. It appears that her cook received for the first time in her life a telegraphic dispatch, and the sight of it caused her so violent an "emotion" that she was quite»overcome, nearly fainted and could not be persuaded to open the envelope. The housekeeper, on being sent lor, opened the terrible missive and found to tho great amusement of the servant's ball that it was from a young woman who was staying in the house on a visit to the cook and who was spending the day: at the Exhibition. She had telegraphed thence to the cook "1 shall not comd home to dinner.
