Fan In Animals.

Fun is confined by no means to mani It is frequently a-serted that, although naturalists have discovered and named the laughing jackass, the laughing hyena, the laughing cuckatoo, ttifere is but one animal indulges in what you might call a horse-laugh," and that is our old friend, the dog. The horse laugh is a humbug, but a horse would laugh if he could for he is not deficient in the senso of the humorous. We have known, in our time, a sly old horse which would slide up to a bystander and put his hoof cn the unfirlanate wight's foot in a manner tla would uot soon be forgotten. It was a comtn.^u trick with him, but no pirofessional practical joker could have done it with his sole in a more inadvertent manner.

The comedy of The World a Mask declares that "a horse is a gentleman," and this may give us a key to the gravity of our "Eclipses'1 and Dobbin," since a horse laugh hag long been regarded as any thing but gentlemanly Colonel O. Kelley's parrot would scream for his dog Rover until he obeyed her summons, and then frighten him away by yel ing, "Get out!" Small birds chase each other about in play but perhaps the conduct of the crane and the trumpeter is mosteztraordi nary. The latter stands on one leg, hops about in the most eccentric manner, and throws summersaults. All animals pre tending violence in their play stop short in'' exercising it. The dog takes the greatest precaution not to injure by his bite, and the orang-outang, in wrestling with his keeper, pretends to throw him and makes faint of biting him.

Some animals carry out, in their play, the resemblance of catching their prey, young cats, for instance, lerp after every small and movable object, to the leaves •trewtd by the autuma winds they crouch and steal forward, ready for the spring, the body quivering and the tail vibrating with emotion, they bound on the moving leat, and spring forward to another, Benger saw, young jaguars and cougars playing with round substance like kittens.

Birds, of the magpie kind, are full ot1 mischief. There is a ttory of a tame magpie, that was seen in a garden, gathering pebbles, and with much solemnity and a studied air, buried them in a hole made to receive a post. After dropping each stone, it cried ''currackl" triumphantly, and set out for another. On examining the spot, a toad was found in the hole, which the magpie was stoning for his amusement.

There is fun ia animals and birds. Indeed there is.

Gallantry and Steam.

A gentleman of Philadelphia', well known as an eminent publisher, received by mail, some weeks ago, a card of invitation, from a literary iady in England, to a birth-day dinner. He immediately left his desk, packed his carpet-bag, and took the lightning train to Bostcn. With in twenty-four hours he was standing on the deck of a Cunard steamer, outward bound, reached Liverpool in due time— took the night train to London. After a few hours sltep he dressed himself for the dinner party, passed a few delightful hours in the society of herself and friends, left London the same night, took a return steamer from Southampton next day, and reached Philadelphia within three weeks from tho hour at which ho opened the la*, dy's note of invtation.

Wearing Flannel

Few persons understand fully the utility of flannel in Summer as well as winter. It should be worn the year round by persons of feeble constitutions, and by those who are troubled with rheumatism or neuralgia. Iufants should wear a flannel band constantly. I have known children to be cured of diarrhea by dressing them in a flannel shirt and woolen stocl.« ings: not a drop of medicine was administered. It is weil in Summer to have^one flannel for day wear and another for night, but do not take off a flannel garment worn by day and sleep without one by night.

Sail and Ashes for Horses. Those keeping horses, should, twice a week, throw in a handful to eacfe of salt and ashes. Mix them by putting in three pints of salt to one of ashes. Horses relish this, and it will prevent bots, colic, &c. A little ground sulphur mixed with salt and ashes, and given once in two or thiee weeks, is also bencficial. All domestic animals will thus be benefited.

A gentleman called on a rich miser, and found him at the table endeavoring to catch a fly* Presently he succeeded in entrapping one, which he immediately put into tha sugar bowl and shut down the cover. The gentleman asked for an explanation of this singular sport. "I'll tell you,' replied the miser, with a triumphant grin overspreading his countenance as he spoke, "1 want to ascertain if the servants steal the sugar."

To give the public an idea of the extant of the telegraph busines of Chicago it is but necessary to mention the fact that forty eight telegraph -wires

there, coming in from different directions, A collection of the many messages, private and publio, that are sent over these wires to and from Chicago, each day, would prove a first-class sensation for the columns of a newspaper or the pages of a book.

A Hartford author is engaged on a history of woman's progress from the earliest ages' entitled, 'From the Fig Leaf to tho crinoline.' Truly a comprehensive subject.

An English woman, in a London magazine, says that the people of this country, particularly in New York, are the politest and best dressed shg ever saw. Our women are very pretty and very Fronch. according to the same authority.

The gibbet, says a French wit is a species of flattery to the human race. Three or four persons are hung, from time to time, for the sake of making the rest believe that they are virtuous.
