THE IRDUK ACT1JKII. :,

See, across the smiling valley, Where the yellow corn-fields stand Fruitful with the red man's blessing,

Rise the mountains tall and grand, With their cloudy purple summit Gazing fnr acrpss the land.

Ssem they like great chiefs in council, Stern and thoughtful every one^ Like a big eye, downward peering

Through the clond-rifts. looks the sun On the broad vale, fair and shining, Where the Bilver rivers run.

There tho smoke of many wigwams, Like a soft haze hovers bine :. There beside the lisping river

Safe is moored tho birch canoe, That with light stroke, quick and steady, Glides the glassy waters through.

Hither comes the dry-voiced robin, With the sunset on his breast, Deepest dye of happy crimson,

Borrowed from the glowing west, That with flaming color kindles Wh .-n the great sun sinks to rest.

Yonder see the forest monarch, See the oak tree burning red, Like a warrior in his war-paint)'

Lifting high his fearless head,"

See the beech trees gathering riiSS&t' By the shady woodiand.stream" Like tbe young ash, tali and slender,

Bending lightly in its place,

Soon will come the pattering rain drops, Slowly falling, chill and damp, Like the tread of stealthly footsteps, ..

Like the dull and muffled tramp, JrWhen our warriors, for the war-path,. File from ont their silent camp.

Astonished Bed Men.

A band of Indians made a sudden attack on a detachment of our soldiers in the mountains. The soldiers had a mountain howitzer mounted on a mule. Not having time to take it off and put it in position, they backed the mule and let drive at the Indians. The load was so heavy that mule and all went tumbling down the hill toward the savages, who, not understanding that kind of warfare, fled like deers. Afterwards one of them was captured, and when asked why he ran so, replied: "Me big lnjin, not afraid of little guns or big guns,- but white man load up and flro a whole jackass at Injin me don't know what to do."

LAWSUITS are often unprofitable things. A Vermont paper tells of a trial at law between two men in that State about a sheep worth $5, the ownership of which was disputed. The case was heard twice and the plaintiff recovered $116 46 damge? and costs of the defendant whilst the plaintiff, although successful, was still out of pocket some $250 for lawyers' fees.— Each of the disputants might have bought a flock of sheep for what it cost him to quarrel over a single animal.

A LADY advertises, in a Southern paper, that she has for sale one baboon, three cats, and a parrot. She says that being married she has no further use for them, as her husband more than supplies their places—requiring more attention than the whole lot, and giving her less pleasure in return. "Why don't she offer him foi* sale and keep the more valuable property
