Thousands have covered the course, the fields, the hills, the stands, the club-house, the lawns, and the park is alive with a vast, expectant.crowd., It.is a fine breezy day the very tiling for a great" race. Every thought .of every one is of. the great horse and bis coming race. He and it are on ail tongues,- and of ^nothing else is there utterance. The hour for tho start ie approaching. The din of preparation is done. The course has been all adjusted, and is now all in smoothness and order. The bugle is sounding out tho hour, and in the distance, from the stands, the great crowd sees the noble horse andjhis attend and horses, entering the course for the great foatto be tried, and which it is hoped willl be accomplished. The inditing music, the vast throng inspire tfre horse, and he c^Tftes" to greet them, with arched neck and elastic step, with dilatednostrils and beaming oyo. Along the course, before tbe stand, he pr&nca^,, and applauding hands and voices welcome him The scene elates him, and his'every nerve is all alive with excitement. Proudly be: moves along, and will not be restrained by bit nor groom. He is impatient of the very" groulid firhich he stands, "and seoms to spurn it. .Hell impatient of his trappings, and shows that he would be uncovered shows that ho longs for tho moment that shall send him away in the race.* Beside him stands the jotfkey, Littlefield, who is to ride the great horse. Ho is small in figure, little and trim. He looks tho rider all over. But a great task is before him, and his face is grave yet it is calm, and confidence is in its every feature, every line. And there stands Waldron the trainer, under whose watch, ful eye Kentucky has developed' into racing ordor. The three, tbe pteed, the jockey, the ^foom, are a picture. They but wait the note of preparation. It sounds, and the girths are loosened from the horse the training robe drops to tho ground,' and he stands forth in all his wealth of racing form and power. The trainer saddles hin, and the jockey mounts. With Littlefleld astride, Kentucky, is ready.

While all this, is being done, along the course other horses .are being saddled and mounted, to go in fhe"race with the champion of tho hour. These are the De Courcey, Lather, Clara and Redwing, all from Kentucky's own stable. De Courcey is to lead off and go with him for two miles. At the club-house, in the second mile, iLuther ii to join in the race, and the three are to run to the end of the second mile, Do Courcey then to drop away. Opening into the third mile Clara is to enter tbe contest, and, with Luther, go on to the finish of tbe third mile. These two are to drop away as Kentucky enters on the fourth mile, and Redwing i? to show for the last one.

The signal Is given, De Courcey leads off, and Kentucky follows. The pace is at once grand. There is no race between them. Kentucky strides away round the north tui^i and .cocues into the curve by the club^iouse^ He is at ease. His ears are playing his. mouth is wide open he is all within hihtaelf. The pace is a winning one if it last?., The seconds pass and the horse goes on It is" but a moment now and he is entering on the straight stretch another moment and he is coming by tbo grand stand. He is still at ease and going grandlj7. He rushes by the judge's stand, and tho watch -marks 1:48. That rate is a winning one. The horse is fresh and strong. He enters the Jsecond mt|$ and.sweeps aw^y isto it with the same great ynce. He has how'finished tW north curve, and comes again near the grand stand a mile and a half is done, and the rate does.not slacken. Now comes Lutber, and there are three in the race. For 100 yards tbe lot lie together, but on- tho far turn Luther goes on to the lead with a rush. All this Kentucky Ijeeds pot. He is striking away with a Steady pace. It XWll not' be long ere he X^ch&s Luther and passes him. He has already donfl?tiaV"to Courcey." "They are now lifting thfe hill $t the three-quar» ter pole, and the gait does not slpW.^They are coming on the straight mil& and will soon bounder tha eye. Will Kentucky show the same ease and the same power as when h« passed before1? The thought is hardly through the mind, and horo he is finishing his second mile. He comes again all with himself. His tiarsstill play his mouth is still open, his stride still steady, regular, and nis action splendid. He passes the stand, and the watch talis

that he is still going at a winning rate.— He Has done the second mile in 1:48., and{he**first'too in 3:36 If heMlf* thir «ilt win, and more than win. Away into the third mile be sweeps,-and there is no falling off.' Luther is still with him De Courcey hss dropped out his task is over, and now Clara's begins. Oi the turn in tjje third mile she joins in, and tho p*C6 quickens.

As yet, Luther has led, but Kentucky now draws to bim. But Clara is fres'jJ and she Can brush away. The great '-»ce is rushing them around the north t'jrn.—r It is done, and again Kentucky comes close to tbe grand stand as he the reverse curve. He is still strong,' mnd is still looking the winner, and time is still at his command. Two miles and a half, are done, and the pace is still too good to be beaten. It goes on, and the far turn is made, and the horses are nearing the grand stand again. And he comes as be--fore. His stride is still steady and even there is no dwelling, no swerving his ears' still play, his mouth is wide open. Littlefield still holds over him a tight rein and. braces him with a strong, steady pull. He passoTthe stand, and the judges note that' .the third mile has been done in 1:53, and the threp miles in 5:29. This is s^ill g^win-^ ning rate, tie has now entered on the" last mile. If he stays it out as gamely as he has done the past ones he cannot be beaten. Luther and Clara have been, caugjht, passed, and dropped aWay.J? l|' bruve, noble Kentucky. Their bolts are nfeii shot, tiidir duty done, and tbe old horse goes on his career. As ho' enters the last mile now, Tie gets a now "competitor to rouse his ardor and quicken his pace,— PvcdWing enters the irena. As tbey leavd the stand she joins him, and a brush sets in. Around tha north turn he is now footing so speedily that shee cannot, g$t away from him. How strong he goes.— Redwing is a footy one, and his staying with, all fresh as she is, shows well" for him. He must win as ha goes now.—

Will he last out? One has hardly asked the questirn ere it is answered. -The^pair. lire quartor of a miJeinfiarJy jtVrgy in the fourth mile, and are .going splendidly.

Tbe crisis is approaching.. If.Kentucky can last out this rally b^lsiafey and will come homo a winner .It is tno instant of his fate. What-will it be? It' is met. Ho gives back. Tho filly Redwing draws away from him. He is in distress.

His. mputh clo3e6. Litchfield has, lqst his pull on him, his ears^gQ^own on bis pole," his tail goes up. Ho "lio the race'is over fell tiino, that never falters-, nevqr t(jr:g,.is winning curve, and stand, along the ..club house enrva, ^,and the'nr-aror Iventuclcy comes the clfa/er^s 6is distresss seen. Still ho struggles and still Liltlafield braces him up and urgeS" him on. But the steady, easy stiide7is gone the ears no longer, play his no9» trils are widely distended his {jaceiilf&i fallen away, and no longer is it a winning one. They have now passed the grand stand and Redwing has dropped hitn.— For more than three miles Littlefleld has had naught to do bat to let his horse go iilong. bractf him up and hold him hard jNWflis labor begins: He -urges Kentucky th9=pur is in his side, but he does not respond. His tail goes up under the pain, but bis gait still droops away

The horse has now passed the bluff beyond tho u'ub House arid reached the south curve, when io he flies tbe course. Hii trouble ie too great, and he bolts to the outside rails, andjj now nearly stopped. Beaten before, he is now doubly beaten. J3ut see Littefield with resolate courage at once commands bis borsejjas a moment before the' hor&e-bad commanded bim and with whip., and spur drives him back to" tbe coUrsS'and' to h'is vfoVfc It is tho expiring effort of both. He '8 finishing the last mile but the pace is sltfw, and time is' fasti Again ht hid' work,, he quickens his pace a trifle, but it is all-in vain. The turn is made the lkst run home to the stand is'u)ftfcing. Both whip and spur do their ofjipe and pysh th| horse, and he does all that rejnains-4ri aim, but that is little, and he comes with fullering stride, distressed and blown.

He reaches the grand stand. Ever before as he passed it, looking the winner, loud cheers and waving handkerchiefs, greeted and encouraged him. But now tie comes a defeated horse, and none can cheer, but all look sorrowful, and pity takes the pl^ce of exultation and joy*,..In siience ho is passing to M)e goal wftere defeat awaits him he approaches the deciding stand, he reaches it, the flag goes down, the race is over, and Kentucky is beaten, and badly .beaten*- Inexore$l$ time marks 7:31f, and 7:20 should nave been reached. Thodefeftt is decisive. "All know that Ije js beg^en, and yet all are longing to seo the time go ijp at th^'stand it goes up, all look, and in pain turn away, sorrowing for both the horse ftnd his owner.
