MA8SACHU8KTT8 politics are exciting just at this time. The contest seems to be between the license law and the anti-license law men.

THEGeorgians are trying to kick up a row with General Pope, and have appealed to the Prosident andGon. Grant to come to their aid, both of which have refused.

THE
cases of tho porsons who took
forged 7-30 notoi are becoming very mucb mixed. Where th=) ns:d3 have not bacn redeemed somebody will huvo to lose, and a tracing out of tho history of each false token, with demands by eucii subsequent holder upon the person from whom te received it, will be common enough. In many cases tho lust holder wiil be able to make his predecessor refund, and eo the demuuds will proceed, until the unfortunato individual who took the counterfeit: from the. forgers, or tkoir agents, is reached. Those who fucoeeded iu obtaining payment from the government, it is now said, will be raado to refund, and the Treasury officers tire strouuous in their assertion of a right to reuovor. Tne claims wiil be stoutly resisted, and it will be urged that the notes w5re not counterfeit, or they would not have been rodocmed or, it' not, is likely to give active employment to the lawyers, und it will aotile some point?, as to the liability of tho gov. eminent, which will bo of advantage in the future, and render the respective rights and duties of pursoas who innooently receive unci pass forged securities more definitely understood.
TH E failure of tlio race horso "Kentucky" to run four miles in poven minutes and twenty seconds, carrying a weight of one hundred and twenty pounds, may be accepted as proof that it is impossible for a horse bearing that burdon to flccompli.-h tho task. The only known instance of the performance of the feat was ovidooced in tho performance of "Lexington," sire of "Kentucky," who, in April, 1865, at the Motario Course, Louisiana, ran four miles, with ono hundred and threo pounds weight, in sovtn minutes, nineteen seconds and three-quarters. At a subsequent race, at the same eour.-e. with liko weight, ho accomplished the feat in sovon minutes twenty«.three and three-quarter seconds. In order to win in this race against time, "Kentucky" would have been compelled to get over each mile in one minute and fifty seconds. He accomplishod the whola distance in sevefa minutes and thirty-one seconds and a halt. He went over the first mile in one minute and forty-oight seconds, and the second mile in tho samo time but here he fell off, and was not able to run the third mile in loss than one minute and fifty-three seconds, and the last in two minutes and twenty-four seconds.— Although tbo horse failed to make the time, his performance, under the circumstances, is the best known. It beats "Lexington's'' time, when the additional weight of seventeoa pounds, which "Kentucky" carried, is takon ioto consideration. If the race had been for two miles, the task would htivo boon performed in three minutes and thirty-six seconds.— Even persons who take no interest in horse racing, this proof of the speed which the horse may attain is interesting
