Drinking at Bars.
Independent at tbe encouragement which the bar fashion of conviviality gives to excess in the use of stimulating liquors, there are muny other objections to tbe practice which not appear to be generally considered. Among these may be mentioned the absolute discomfort attending it- Men will tell you, indeed, that taking a drink at a bar is but a momentary proceeding, So it is perhaps but what about taking half a doxen at one standing? Nothing can be more usual than to see a knot of men standing up at a bar for an hour at a time discus* sing politics religion' social science, or such other topics as may then be uppermost, but always discussing bad whisky.
This manner of convivality—if one may properly apply such a term to itleads to quick drinking, each stander at the bar swollowing the contents of his tumbler at a gulp, for the reason, as he will tell youj that "he came there just to have one drink and go." The chances arethat he will have ten before he goes. The liquor at the bar is very "handy." The bar is a sure place to meet with "friends," ever of whom, according to bar etiquetto, is obliged to treat and
to
be treat*
ed in turn. If drinkers would sit at a table they would be far more likely to drink in moderation then they do at bar. There ia a certain degree of priTaCy assocN ted with a table, seated at which, and shipping his beverage deliberately, the drinker is comparatively safe from the attentions of promiscuous "friends," as well as much less likely to indulge to excess than he would be if hob-nobbing with them at the bar.
The practice of treating, and expecting to be treated in turn, is mainly answerable for tbe terrible excesses in drink for which Americans are noted. In addition to thU. it is the cause of many inconvenienceA^romiscuous introduction at a bar is one of ttt* diragreeable results. Then, the turn to. "treat" may fall upon some indiviual who' has money enough in his pocket, perhaps, to pay for the refreshment of himseir and a lriend who has come in with him1 but not enough to liquidate the liquor score the whole crowd. It is true that beer drinkers are generally very considerate on such occasion, and ready to wave their cherished {privilege but then there is modification, you see, for tho individual with the depleted port* monnaie, who might have* passed for a thoroughly soivent member of society had he not unluckily fallen in with a circle of tipplers at a bar. In some parts of the West the practice of treating at a bar amounts to a positive nuisance.
The travelers who enter the roadside tavern for refreshment, had better look well to the company before he oalls for anything at the bar. The room is usually filled with loafers who have been awaiting his arrival, or that of "any other man', who is likely to have money aboflt him. The moment his drink is poured out for him all these fellows walk up to the bar anu have their drink too, and the verdant traveler has to pay for all, or stand tbe consequences that are silently expressed on the muzzles of half a dozen revolvers. It ia but a few years since a custom prevailed in the bar-rooms of New Orleans, pf ringing, a bell when any solitary in^ dividual cauie up to the bar to drink, upon which signal every person within heating of that bell had a right to consider himself the gust of the solitary individual, and to act acordingly.
When people grow to bo more civilized in their manner of drinking, their will be less drinking among them. Fast drinking is more injurious than slow, and speedy succession of drinks in a bar-room characteristic. "These are not our glasses, sir," said one of a party of young men, addressing a quite elderly gentlemen who was staying in a little inn, and who had watched thoir reiterated tippling during the day "These are not our glassess," said tho young man, pointing at an array cf emptied ones that stood upcS counter. "Hour glasses?" retorted tbe old gentleman, purposely mistaking the expression "I should think not—they look a good deal more like minute glasses!" And it is minute glasses, every minute of the day, at most of our city bars—[2V.
